@Expat(ish)RE: July In Delhi: Because of the heat? Why else are you "Meh" on India?
@Chip Ahoy: Not. Funny. (Because it would eventually be true - except that contemporary Americans in that wage range would never learn a foreign language)
This is a direct result of India having American entrepreneurship and capital market forces exported to them from the US. Good for them. I hope they keep it up and start seeing the fruits of their hard earned labors. $35 is probably mostly from government subsidies, but be that as it may, they will start to innovate in their learning environments. What you don't hear about is India's plan to capture every single Indian in biometric systems within 10 years. That is something that will really be a technological marvel to perform.
@q12345q6789 - I am not "meh" on India. But the Indian government, god bless it, is famously unable to get broad based plans done in any sort of time frame. And somehow they are going to distribute computers? Dude, how about water or paved roads. In the capital.
Delhi in July makes Baton Rouge look like Boulder. I was amazed as I thought Mumbai in July was harsh. Delhi was in another world. It was 44 the night I left and 22 in Bangalore two hours later. I had to put my jacket on as I sorta felt chilled.
The $35.00 iPad is a sham. The Kindle display, alone, cost $60.00 (not the processor or case)just the display. The Indian government is known for releasing "vapor ware" that never comes about.
I don't see why you would price it at that level, even if you could. The sweet spot for such a thing is more like $199. The only reason I, and millions of others, don't have an iPpad is the price is about double what we are willing to pay.

Steve Jobs had better cut his prices.
I just got back from 15+ days in Delhi, Pune, and Bangalore. (Not my first trip, but, July in Delhi is a memory!)
So, while I am probably the biggest non-Indian fan of India in general w/i a 1K mile range I say...
Yeah, that sounds like a good plan. And I will be very interested to see the results.

I actually wrote Kapil about 2p today about this when it hit the wire. It will change everything.
Just remember. These people need to TURN OFF THEIR airconditioning.
Save the planet. And stay in the 19th century where they belong.

(Disclosure: 2 of my kids were born there. Kinda fond of the place in a weird away. [And no, they were NOT automatically granted Indian citizenship.])
Wouldn't it be hilarious if their tech support was in the US?
DO WANT.
