The USA Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals... at the Capitol Square in Madison.

Congratulations to Joshua Carter of Midwestern State University, Robert Bush of Marian College, and Wisconsin's own Matthew Brandt of Lindenwood University — first, second, and third in a field of 122 cyclists who circled the square for an hour last night.

I got a pic at the start:

Yes, but who won the "Most Garish Eyeball-Destroying Cyclist's Wear" contest?

This weekend is the 49th TOSRV bicycle trip-- Tour of the Scioto River Valley, from Columbus to Portsmouth, Ohio, about 110 miles. Yesterday was the first leg, to Portsmouth. It was unusually cold and blustery--the day started with temperatures around 40, drizzly, and very, very windy--up to 40 mph. I was driving to KY, and got in the middle of dozens of cyclists for about 10 miles on Rte 104 in Waverly. I used to live near Portsmouth, and would see them come in at the end every Mother's Day eve. Maybe next year I'll finally do the trip myself.

Portsmouth is on the Ohio River, and the trip there is mostly on a downhill grade. Coming back today is the hard part.

The photographer specializes in the "rear three quarters view".

Since when is cycling a collegiate sport?

Looks like a "club sport" event to me. (Much like collegiate rodeo)

A Navy guy. Tread on him and there'll be a carrier in your face.

Shoot, I missed it! I was around and could have gone. I've seen other races up there and they literally take your breath away as they go by. Amazing.

Keep the tread of your front tire away from the tread of my rear tire. Or suffer the consequences.

Ann- did you see any Wolverine cyclists? I wonder if they sent a team to participate.
Great pics, BTW, wouldnt expect ant less from a Michigan alum. :)

Have you taken any pictures on your iPhone with Hipstamatic, TiltShiftGen, or Pano yet?

Tread is an old Anglo-Saxon word of the kind Orwell would think well of.

It's telltale that "treadmill" was originally a prison-related term.

I dunno, a TeaParty enthusiast can't be popular in Madison. He's going to get his bike keyed.

There was a neighborhood-wide yard sale yesterday which made my usual walk much more interesting. It also made me wish I had a bicycle to cover more territory.

People were practically giving away their barely used exercize equipment. No surprise really. Neighborhood bargain shoppers were driving from one house to another four doors down!

If they circled the square for an hour it was a criterium. They probably also held a time trial and a road race, separately.

Cycling was a club sport when I did it at UC Davis in the 80s.

So glad the Navy wasn't sponsoring a cyclist with the American flag on his butt.

The Navy biker has the Navy's "Don't Tread on Me" Jack (aka flag) on his shorts. The tea party uses the Gadsen flag, similar, but not exactly the same. The Navy Jack has been used off and on since 1775. All Navy personnel currently in the middle east currently have a "Don't Tread on Me" jack patch on one arm of their BDUs and the US flag on the other. Pretty good chance this Navy biker had a US flag as well not seen by the photo angle
