But....they knock so politely and promise not to poop on the floor or sleep on the couch.
You are quite right to be leery of cougars, bears and other wild life when hiking in remote areas. You are right to be even more wary when they approach you in your community, because that means that they are no longer afraid of YOU.
Paul, Because there are killers and smugglers and evildoers throughout the park. Stay away. I heard about this guy that went camping in Yosemite and when he woke up in the morning he was sitting in a cooler full of ice and a note tied to his nalgene said "We took a kidney. Call 911." That happens all the time. It's a terrible, awful, god-forsaken place. Stay away. That photo at the top of the NYT article is a fake - it's actually a picture of Lassen National Park. Go there instead.
In case you city slickers think you don't have to worry about wildlife, I've seen a coyote run right down the middle of the street in Bethesda, MD, just a mile outside the DC city line.
Can a law professor apply for a judgeship? Would she be happy living in Yosemite with only Meade and the wildlife after years of putting up with snot-nosed law students?
Something about brown bears and tall, green woods comes to mind.
If you're thinking about it, Professor, I say to go for it!

Good grief. There's a Federal courthouse inside Yosemite?

My neighborhood in Chicago was full of bears. I did not let them in either.
I taught I taw a putty tat. Say what you want, but when you see one out "there" with only your wits to rely on it puts the W in wild
I am outraged at this denial of access to justice for some of our most disadvantaged residents.
Hahaha!!! They come up to the front door and knock on it and say "Hey, can you get these people out of here?!?!?!"

Good grief, Professor! Don't tell me you are applying for the open judgeship?

Guilty Looks enter Tree Beers, very popular in the 60s, speaking of bears in the forest.
They're part of the angry mob protesting Obama-care. THAT"S why they won't let them in!
