NOW shames Letterman for his treatment of Sarah Palin and her daughters.

"The sexualization of girls and women in the media is reaching new lows these days — it is exploitative and has a negative effect on how all women and girls are perceived and how they view themselves. Letterman also joked about what he called Palin's 'slutty flight attendant look' — yet another example of how the media love to focus on a woman politician's appearance, especially as it relates to her sexual appeal to men."

Great. Feminism properly stands separate from Democratic and Republican politics. NOW notes that at the end of the Letterman shaming:
[I]'s important to note that when Chelsea Clinton was 13 years old she was the target of numerous insults based on her appearance. Rush Limbaugh even referred to her as the "White House dog." NOW hopes that all the conservatives who are fired up about sexism in the media lately will join us in calling out sexism when it is directed at women who aren't professed conservatives.
So NOW is setting an example. Let's hope they keep it up too.

In fact, does anyone have any idea what the hell all this is about? I mean, it was easy when people were commenting on the topic of NOW and Letterman and such, but then something happened somewhere...

The owl is not what it seems...

Uh oh, PinchingLoaf is here! I knew he wouldn't be able to resist the alluring fragrance of Sarah Palin for long!

Tell us, PinchingLoaf, since Sarah Palin's pussy has been latched onto your leg for almost a year now, have you taken to wearing kilts? After all, it must be hard to get a pair of pants over that thing.

"repressing sexuality"?

Pasta,

The order requiring that brass be destroyed instead of sold to reloaders was rescinded. (Will it come back? Who knows--but I'm certainly not planning my life around the fact that it couldn't.)

MUL,

"I happen to think that anyone who voted for Bush in '04 and doesn't regret it..."

Back to "Huh" territory on this one. Listen, Bush wasn't running against Hubert Humphrey or Scoop Jackson, his actual opponent was John F'n Kerry. Kerry! So no, while I would have preferred a much different slate of candidates (how about Fred Thompson vs. Zel Miller?), given the actual choices I had I'm glad I voted for Bush and would do so again under the same circumstances.

All this over a Letterman Top Ten List that he didn't even write and he's already apologized for?

Nice "apology". Really.

I'd tell Palin to lighten the fuck up, but her outrage is just a manipulation of the media to get her back in the news. She's even pretending the joke couldn't possibly have been referring to her older daughter, Bristol, even though the joke was obviously referring to Bristol whether she was at the game or not.

Yes, public figures are to blame for people mocking their kids. We've ALWAYS had this unwritten rule that the children of celebrities were off-limits.

I mean, Dave's bastard demon spawn jokes, I'm sure, are QUITE the popular past time in his writers' meeting. And the crowd would laugh at jokes about Obama's two girls doing blow with Biden's screw-up of a daughter.

It's fitting NOW chimed in because Palin's latest statements sound like the old school leftist PC police (which NOW was and is a part of) plaguing college campuses before the backlash against political correctness put them somewhat in check. Yeah, Palin, keep trying to make a federal case out of a joke, and paint Letterman as some perverted rapist who must be forced to apologize to women everywhere before being fired and crucified.

So, are you going to tell people to lay off Rush for mocking Chelsea SIXTEEN YEARS AGO?

...which, mind you, he immediately apologized for.

...and I mean an ACTUAL apology.

LoafScumI'd tell Palin to lighten the fuck up, but

She'd beat you up. Really, making jokes about raping the daughters of your political enemy, and you claim we need to lighten up? You're scum.

sci: jokes about Obama's two girls doing blow with Biden's screw-up of a daughter

Or the more obvious one involving Bill Clinton with Obama's girls.

Oh, Fen, I'm scum because I don't think it's a big deal?

Again, Palin is just trying to milk this to get back in the spotlight.

Anyway, you voted for McCain, who once joked: "Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because her father is Janet Reno."

Actually, I'l confess McCain's joke made me LOL the first time I heard it. But funny as it is, it's not a joke a senator should be saying in public.

The joke on Letterman was lame but no reason to manufacture a week-long scandal. Sarah Palin loves playing the victim. She was targeted by comedians because her candidacy for VP was laughable.

LoafingOaf said...

Yes, Palladian, I always read the Palin threads, to look at how you right-wingers still worship the lady even after she made a fool of herself as a VP candidate. I'm not worried about Palin after the American people saw her as the dunce candidate she was and rejected her. But if Palin wants to talk about offensive, her aerial wolf hunts show she's not just a dunce but a fucking asshole.

Bristol Palin is a certified slut. She got pregnant at 17, what other evidence do you need.

I think that's perfectly valid material for a comedian to use, especially when this slut is now advocating for abstinence.

Yes, you're scum because you think jokes about raping a 14 year old are no biggie. You think rape is funny? Rape of a minor? Or is it because she's the daughter of your political enemy thats got you so titilated?

Scum.

You'll love Sharia, Loafing. You'll get to rape her yourself.

Sorry - was out last night, but I felt that question was definitely worth following up on - in the interests of full disclosure and questions of supreme importance.

Sweet Fancy Moses; now I find myself in agreement with MUL.

I feel your pain, MUL. (For the record, the officiating in this series was an abomination -- I think that Gary Bettman just wanted to move that warehouse full of Syd Crosby action figures that he had left over after last year).

"

So... just to be clear on this...

"Slut" no longer means having sex with multiple people at the drop of a hat? In fact, if birth control is successful or if an abortion is obtained, a girl can not be a "slut" no matter how many people she has sex with? Now it's just getting pregnant that counts a girl as a slut?

There's no evidence of multiple partners or "slutty" behavior, only two young and foolish young people thinking they were only anticipating wedding vows. And is anything more understandable than someone saying, Look, this seemed like a good idea at the time, but it really wasn't, so don't do what I did, OKAY?

Wow, if we have to advocate every stupid thing and dumb decision we've ever made we are SO screwed. I suggest that everyone take out a loan to buy a Kirby vacuum cleaner... after all, that's what I did, so it would be wrong of me to say not to do that?

Also... big decisions (like vacuum cleaner loans) should always be made two weeks post-partum... if I were to suggest that anything else was a better plan that would be wrong of me. Wouldn't it?

I honestly think that the anger with Bristol is that she didn't have an abortion. Her parents committed the sin of failing to support the "a baby will ruin your life forever" message that our young people are supposed to be given. She's not a bad example because she had *sex*... expecting teenagers not to have sex is repression...

It's the baby.

BTW, the libertarian position on sex education is that *any* government or coercive education is wrong. Any government or coercive education that is against the will of people is doubly wrong.

Truth is not an excuse for government coercion. It can not be, and still be liberty.

Synova said...

And by "against the will of the people" I mean "against individual autonomous choice."
