If you experience an uncontrollable itch in your scalp/neck area in the next few days, it's probably chiggers. Vinegar will kill them. It's why I rarely frolic on the grass anymore.
c'est la vie, though. Maybe it's too early for chiggers.
Never under estimate a good woman in love, and then you have to add in the Althouse trifecta of beautiful intellect, body, and spirit. Let's pray that Meade can keep up the pace.
Althouse, you know that I love you. And I love dogs.
Now that I've covered the emotional aspects of the I can ask the pertinent question: Meade, what do you apply to the lawn to get the lush growth and early spring green-up with out thatch or dead spots?
"Meade, what do you apply to the lawn to get the lush growth and early spring green-up with out thatch or dead spots?"
Michael H: Thanks for noticing. Here in USDA Zone 6b we apply a dry granular high nitrogen lawn fertilizer (20-10-10) in early March. A second, lighter application goes down 4 weeks later. The only other fertilization for the lawn is done in late October after core aerating.
We mow as close as possible without scalping before new growth begins in the spring. Overseed the entire lawn with a blend of annual and perennial ryegrasses right after the first mowing and then raise the height on the mower blades to 3" leaving clippings to decompose and enrich the soil. If you have dead or thin patches, just overseed with the ryegrass seed and rake in. I hope that helps.
Meade, thanks! I've already done the early March application, and the first mowing (short, as you recommended) should be done this week - I live 450 miles of Cincinnati - with blade set low.
Aside: Does anyone other than fertilizer companies do lawn care blogging?
Althouse, it's wonderful to see you looking so happy and relaxed. Now that you have had a chance to get to know a dog, I'm sure you are beginning to understand why your readers so strongly encouraged you to get one of your own!
I can't remember the doggie's name but I bet he knows you well enough now to give you your own enthusiastic greeting when you come for a visit. Isn't it great?
After three years without a dog my husband and I have two (older) adoptees. They are like small happy children in their lust for life and enjoyment of simple things like meals & walks. I'm sure that your new springtime love is helping you to have that same attitude.
Meade, you don't have to deal with St. Augustine like we do down here in Florida.
St. Augustine Grass, the Friend to Mr. Weed and Mr. Chinch Bug. Nothing really gets going until the Tropical season down here.
I got more brown patches than I know what to do with. Sadly, I think I'm past Weed N' Feed time, but I'm open to suggestions. Perhaps overseeding in the fall as you do up there?
It's nice grass once it grows in, though. Bahama is much nicer, however.

That photo almost demands an LOL style caption of, "I Haz a Happi!!!"
Lovely!
You are actually looking younger these days, professor! L'chaim!
I will eat pancakes on your grave.
Happy? No, I'd say giddy. But it's spring and you're engaged. And a Lab for the frosting on the cake. Good on ya.
That photo is a great way to start the weekend. Love is in the earth for a season.
It looks like Althouse flew this time.. No, I mean flew as in a plane.
Someone needs a spay tan, and a French manicure.
Ah! Left the phone on vibrate, eh?
That Meade is sure making you rethink some long-held opinions.Go, Meade!
Maxine: Spay tan?? For the dog, right.

2:13 PM.
That actually sounds like a great business idea: "Your one stop shop for spaying AND tanning!"
Maxine, where do you get your spay tan?
NOM, NOM, NOM, NOM.
Beside Althouse and the dog, that is one mighty good looking green lawn.
Is Meade showing off all three?
EDH: I agree; beautiful colors in this photo!

Love,
Is Meade showing off all three?
Lawless, braless and clawless?

Cheap, fast, and out of control.

Just remember, Professor: Don't dial the dog, and don't spade or neuter the iPhone.
...now that's a smile.
that grass is too short to support chiggers.
Nice photo.
Dogs are just great. People should be more like dogs.
Except for the licking part.
Well, maybe even the licking part....more licking = less fighting?
Although I guess it'd be odd having a conversation with someone on the economy or Middle East and they just stop talking and start going at it....
'Course if it was some posters here (______insert names) you'd be relieved.
The salon also offers a treatment to vacuum away underarm flab.
They can exfoliate the dead, dry skin on the elbows.
I highly recommend the pariffin wax hand treatment.
Remember, all these procedures are a tax write-off, as these are business expenses that relate to career development and maintenance.

With his (her? I forget) ears pulled back, he looks like my dog.

What a wonderful picture, right down to the two hearts on the dog's collar. Perfect.
Great smile!
Dog's not too bad either, and Meade took two good photos! This one and the post you made later.
It is nice to see you look so joyful
