I like a Prez showing off his reading skills as much as the next guy, but....with his cabinet is shambles and the stimulus package in jeopardy this type of "campaign" stop does not help his image right now. You do these type of appearances when you are getting no press or to get local press.
Michael; Perhaps you should do a little D&D before spouting racist nonsense.
The National Adult Literacy Survey indicates that 25% of U.S. adults read at the lowest functional level, meaning, for example, that they can locate an expiration date on a driver's license but cannot fill out most motor-vehicle forms.
In New Orleans, that figure is 44%, according to the survey, which is performed every decade and was last conducted in 2003.
A report from the National Center for Education Statistics shows Louisiana's 8.3% public high school dropout rate is the second- highest in the nation. Louisiana had 16,361 dropouts from a total of 196,040 students.
Outside the Golden Triangle (Louisville, Lexington and northern Kentucky which encompasses some Cincinnati suburbs) The rest of the state is largely rural, and statewide, 42% of adults are at “basic” and “below basic” levels of literacy, according to the Kentucky Adult Education Web site.

Maybe they were feeling a little grim, as they said, and wanted a change of scenery. I can see it.
I have twice been asked to read things for people in the grocery store. Once by a man who told me he'd left his reading glasses in the car (possibly true) and once by a woman who handed me a box of frozen sausage biscuits and asked if she could microwave them. I read her the directions, she thanked me and put them in the cart. Nicely dressed older lady. Dang.
My mom used to be fairly involved with the literacy council where she lives (in Mississippi) and she's told me that there are all kinds of reasons why some adults can't read.

My Pet Unicorn?
No way!
Well, at least we got through that without a terrorist attack.
Is this where the Obamas' children go to school?
Didn't think so.
Vouchers, Mr. President!
Several goats fainted when President Obama entered the room.
EDH--that's great! I'd read about fainting goats before, but never seen them in, umm, action.
"My horn can pierce the sky!"
History repeating itself as farce.
BTW, the text says "Copyright 2008".

People in Kentucky are freezing and without power or heat. Obama read, people are dead!
Two affirmative action figures show up in school. And it's news, or should I say, photo-op.
There is talk that Obama is going quit using the phrase war on terror. May I suggest a replacement? How about Pee Wee Obama's Great Adventure.
Not familiar with 'The Moon Over Star.' History book? Cresent moon?
Maybe this is the star in question...
cheers,
Daniel in Brookline
I don't get it.
Oh. Never mind
the wolf said..."People in Kentucky are freezing and without power or heat. Obama read, people are dead!"
Fortunately most of the people in Kentucky can't read so they don't realize so many of them are dead.
*Also: Notice how Obama's book is NOT upside down?
And the W-H-I-N-I-N-G...continues.

Lovely.
