Time picks Barack Obama. Duh.
They should have called the issue: Person of the Year Other Than Barack Obama. That would have created some excitement. Could have got the Sarahphiles charged up. The Hillariacs. Might have hopped up the hopes of Huckanuts. Even Mittsmittens like me could have dreamed.

Mrs. Hoosier and I were on our 'Holiday Date' last weekend and during our travels around the mall, I was just dumbstruck by the number of Obama T-shirts, posters and what not all with 'We Can Change' and 'Yes we Can' with HIS ONENESS in the forground with that faraway look that one attributes to deep thinkers or say, one tripped out on drugs.
The Obama all the time is starting to creep me out. This is beyond hero worship and starting to get a too cultish for me.
Shouldn't you, like, have to do something first, before being person of the year?
Shouldn't you, like, have to do something first, before being person of the year?
Well I would think you also should have done something before writing two memoirs too but.....
Obama seems like a perfectly reasonable choice. I can't think of anyone else more prominent in 2007. If Hillary won, then she should have been it. If McCain won, then possibly Obama again.
Hoosier Daddy, it's just now staring to get creepy? Where ya been buddy? The Lord God Obama who shall command the seas to recede and pay everyone's mortgage has been creepy for almost as long as I've been aware of his existance.
Lightworker of the Year...

Sounds like good old American capitalism. After Jan 20th the mark-down tables will be loaded.

But he did do something! He became US president-elect without having done anything.
I'm just impressed that Time managed somehow to actually pick an actual PERSON this year.
Excellent label.
Why don't they just go ahead and call him "Person of the Next Eight Years"

LOL. I was rooting for the uphill toilet.

Actually it would be Person of the Next Eight to Ten Years
Reminds me of the time when I was Time's Person of the Year.
Hey, Ann - you were the person of the year too!
So big deal. It's not even his first time.
I wonder who would top this year's list of Time's 299,000,000 least influential Americans. Perhaps John McCain.
The American Taxpayer is the Person of the Year.
I think the American Taxpayer is going to be the rape victim of the year.
Make that the decade.
Trey
I've never understood Althouse's love for Mittens. She didn't like McCain because he wasn't "conservative enough," but our Mittens is even less conservative (not to mention more phony) than McCain. Obviously it's purely a physical thing.
Original Mike said..."Shouldn't you, like, have to do something first, before being person of the year?"
YEAH!!!
Being elected President of the United States is NO BIG DEAL!!
*What have YOU ever done in YOUR life that compares?
Mitt's mittens?
Did somebody say something?
Here are two losers who were also selected...and we can all see how their work, judgment and reputations have fared:
George W. Bush (twice no less??)
R-U-U-U-U-D-Y the buffoon.
Trey, why are you worried about taxes?
You need to be employed before they kick in.
And the whining continues.
Obama won.
Your guy and your Princess lost.
GET OVER IT.
What a bunch of crybabies.
Time stuffed the ballot box.-
Time has featured Obama on its cover 14 times since Jan. 1. Newsweek was close behind, featuring the now-president-elect on 12 of its issues. Time has had 52 issues in 2008, so Obama has been featured on more than one-in-four of its covers, or about 27% of the time.
That number, though, goes even higher if you include how many times Obama has appeared in the "skybox" -- 11 times.
That means Obama's face or name has somehow made it onto the cover of Time just about half of the time this year (25 out of 52 issues -- 48%)
Newsweek has had 49 issues this year so far (through Dec. 22), so Obama has been featured on about a quarter of its covers as well.
Zachary Paul Sire "I've never understood Althouse's love for Mittens. She didn't like McCain because he wasn't "conservative enough," but our Mittens is even less conservative (not to mention more phony) than McCain. Obviously it's purely a physical thing."
In fact, I do think you need to have a physically attractive candidate if you want to win. When's the last time the less attractive candidate won the presidency? 1976?
But what I liked about Mitt was that he had expertise in economics, and I didn't mind that he'd adjusted his positions to suit the people he represented in Massachusetts. In fact, I'm a moderate, and I like where I thought he was on the social issues. I like some pragmatism. I don't like ideologues.
Hard to believe, but I actually agree with Ann.
Mitt would have been a far better candidate than McCain, for the reasons she provides.
I also think that if he or Ridge were the V.P. candidate they would have won the election or at least made it much more interesting.
Palin was the nail in McCain's coffin and the comments we've heard from him and others since the election makes it clear, even he knows it was a major blunder.
Actually the Time Person of the Year has traditionally been defined as the person who, for good or ill, affected the news the most.
By that criteria Obama is a clear win. The election was the 800 lb. gorilla of the news this past year and Obama was at the center of it all.
Also most new President-Elects since Jimmy Carter have gotten to be P.O.Y. after the election (the exception being George H.W. Bush).
"Also most new President-Elects since Jimmy Carter have gotten to be P.O.Y. after the election (the exception being George H.W. Bush)."
And he was P.O.Y. in 1990.
Hard to believe, but I actually agree with Ann.
I'm sure she's thrilled.
I agree with Mike - what's he done to merit this? He was the Democratic candidate for President and won in a year that the convention wisdom said that the Democrats couldn't lose. As Hoosier Daddy alluded to in the first comment to this post, what we have here is a media-fed cult of personality.

Then Greenspan should have been person of the year. The election dominated the year, the economy dominated the election, the housing crash was the beginning of the economic problems, and Greenspan has been portrayed as more directly responsible than any other person for feeding that bubble.

You know it's amazing. Right about the time my hemmroids start flaring up, Michael the asshat shows up.
Coincidence?
Hoosier--
Have you checked to see if there's a keyboard near your ass?
True, G. H. W. Bush was twice Man of the Year, (three times depending how you count the “two George Bushes”) But he did not become M. O. Y. for 1998, when he was elected.

1988.
And no, 1988 was the year of the (perpetually) Endangered Earth. Bracketed on both sides in 1987 and 1989 by Gorbachev.
Heh. That's balance, people.
