"Maybe a period of heartless liberalism is a needed corrective after eight years of compassionate conservatism."

"But here's the big question: Would Obama be as brutal in defending America's interests as he is in pandering to xenophobes and global warmists?"

Asks James Taranto, kindly linking to me, in a Best of the Web entitled "Beloved Aunt." ("Curb Your Enthusiasm" fans will remember the famous obituary typo.)

Ann, you forget you were way ahead on this heartless liberal stuff in 2007. Remember Hillary's "Compassionate misanthropism"?

Leave Obama's aunt alone. Everybody has relatives they have no use for. It's no reflection on him that he has so many close relatives living in squalor and want.

Wince said...

The dividing line seems to be whether it's other people's money, doesn't it?

Where has Obama ever been frugal with money that is not his own?

Aunt is living off the taxpayer? No problem, until she's discovered and becomes a political liability, and then it's off to the hell hole with you.

Coal plant trying to produce some electricity? Take their money and give it to somebody else.

David said...

Even those of us who are voting for Obama hope that he does not believe everything he has said. Or at least that the possibility of political backlash (from, say, coal miners and households buying electricity?) will moderate his inclinations. Obama will be President of all the People, not just of the liberals. If he forgets that, he be President only for four years.

You could be right. I mean the Rev. Wright thought he was a faithful member of his congregation and William Ayres thought he was his friend and they were both wrong.

If it were up to me, BHO's aunt would either voluntarily self-deport, or find an imm. lawyer to see if her case can be appealed.

However, BHO has a different idea.

Obama wants his own aunt to be deported, at the same time as he doesn't want millions of other illegal aliens to be deported.

What a wonderful person he is.

(Note: it's difficult to keep track of all the ways BHO has lied in this case, but he appears to have lied about knowing she was here illegally. And, he was definitely lying in those previous quotes provided at the link: he was pretending there were only two choices available to us when there are others. In the second quote, he also lied about the positions of the two people mentioned.)

I believe in reading minds. I think you have to take people at their word and assume they are telling the truth. What is Obama saying? He is saying it is going to be hard. That he is going to challenge people. What the hell does that mean?

I think his talk on energy is revealing. Listen to the now infamous interview with the SF Chronical. He says that he wants to raise energy rates and slow down the economy. He says that it will be hard (there is that word again) but that the US economy will be better off in the long run for developing sustainable energy.

He is having his aides read books on FDR. Overall you get from Obama an incredible feeling of niavity. You have to remember he has never held a steady job and never had any experience in business or the military or any area where reality runs head first into theory and ideas. He has spent his life sheltered in universities and political organizations. He really seems to think this crackpot stuff will work even though it has failed miserably every time it has been tried.

If he wins tommorow, the lesson the country will learn will be not to elected and unemployed community organizer and part time law professor President. All things considered it is no surprise that he appeals to journalists so much. Obama has never done anything in his life. He has never made a case in court. Never worked for a government agency much less a private company. He has never fought a war or done much of anything beyond raw political activity. Given that it makes sense that he would appeal to people who haven't done anything themselves.

I've seen this argument for Obama many times before (I'm voting for him because he can't really believe everything he's saying), and I find it astounding.

What about Obama suggests that he's more moderate than his statements? Certainly not his legislative record, his pre-legislative work history, or his associations. What is it that makes you disbelieve his consistently far-liberal statments?

And perhaps more importantly, if Obama doesn't believe "everything" he says, how do you know which parts he really believes and which he doesn't?

Would Obama do this? Would Obama do that? Does Obama think this? Does Obama think that? Nobody knows. Nobody CAN know. It's futile trying to imagine. He's told you what he imagines you want to hear. He's told me what he imagines I want to hear. He's told alpha eunuch and the like what he imagines they want to hear. Notice a pattern? He's a cypher. He's a blank canvas upon which you fling whatever you wish. So, get to flinging. Frankly, I'm exhausted with this discussion. I've long ago ceased listening to anything that wanker has to say.

And for the record, McCain is nearly as foul a dissimulator.

Everyone should just relax. BHO is definitely going to govern from the center if (as seems increasingly unlikely) he becomes president.

Why, he'll have a Dem congress, an MSM that will keep lying for him, all his far-left and Chicago buddies, and millions of little helpers in various government agencies throughout the land (teachers, civil servants, etc. controlled by their unions).

Given that, there's no doubt that he'll govern straight down the middle. If he doesn't, 50 GOP House members will write a letter, or something.

Nearly one party control isn't so bad. After all, the Soviet Union had some pretty cool art. Maybe Althouse could make some nice pictures of that art.

A lesbian friend and I were talking, she was upset because I was not voting for her beloved Messiah, so I asked her how she could, in good conscience, vote for him even though he is opposed to gay marriage. She said "He's not telling the truth about that."

Well there you go. She knows Obi is lying and will vote for him, perhaps, because of that.

"Global Warmist" is a good term because most of the people in question view global warming as a religious, not a scientific, issue.

The simple reality is that even if the scientific consensus about global warming is correct, none of the nonsense Al Gore and his ilk are proposing will actually stop it -- or even significantly slow it down. Nattering on about cutting emissions by a few percent is all well and good, but that's the environmental equivalent of putting a band aid on cancer. A trillion-dollar band aid, for that matter.

The sad reality is that even if global warmists are right about the coming environmental catastrophe, their proposed solutions are STILL completely idiotic. Short of forcing everyone in the world to abandon fossil fuels and switch to nuclear power (and I'd love to hear suggestions on how we "force" India and China to do that) there isn't anything we can do, today, to avoid the predicted problems.

So keep your hands off my wallet until you have a solution that will actually WORK. Then we'll talk.

Chip, I don't think it is any mystery what Obama will do. He will veer the government drastically to the left . That is what his history tells us. That is what his senate voting record tells us. The idea that no one knows what he stands for is intended for general public consumption only. The left is fully aware of what he stands for.

Fahrenheit ones are, but not those nasty, atheist Celsius ones. And don't get me started on that Kelvin crap.

When they went from handy devices to tell the temperature outside to oracles predicting doom from man's damnable existence.

She had 4 years to voluntarily leave or appeal her deportation order...electing instead to sponge off the US taxpayer and flout the law and the courts.

*****************
revenent - The simple reality is that even if the scientific consensus about global warming is correct, none of the nonsense Al Gore and his ilk are proposing will actually stop it

And the entire AGW movement shrinks from discussing the real driver:

We had 1 billion carbon users in 1900. We have 6.7 billion now. Both the Left and the Religious Right agree that it should not be part of the debate, for different reasons. The Left sees power as no longer coming out of a barrel, but the birth canals of righteous, noble black and brown people who will end white oppressors reign. The Right thinks God wants every blessed little baby a couple or single woman can breed - that overcrowded lands are what God loves because the Mother Theresas can minister to the poor who turn to God because no man will help - there are just too many to help. And they also believe that Jesus will assure us that we never run out of resources....

The ugly fact is that illegal immigration and excessive "reunification" of whole villages here after one refugee arrives from a squalid land over-bred out of a future - drives US population growth and most of our infrastructure problems. We had 150 million Americans plus non-citizens here in 1960 and were a oil exporter. 225 million in 1973. 300 million in 2008. US Census says 363 million by 2030 and 438 million by 2050. (more than China or the whole Subcontinent had in 1900).

And part of the nonsense of the Gorebots is that we nevertheless have to reach 1990 Kyoto goals as a country with major population growth issues, vs. static population Europe and Japan, with competitors India and China exempted. Absolutely insane to think we have some "moral obligation" to make good on Algore being snookered so badly in meetings he agreed to screw America - by 95-0, the Senate agreed Gore was clueless...before Bush hatred overwhelmed every rational critique. Gore was for "saving humanity", Bush was not, ergo the Nobel Peace prize, Academy Award and Algore who failed out of law and divinity schools treated at conferences and universities as the preeminent expert on climate and "exciting solutions".

What a joke.

Obama will defend his interests. Only his.

America itself only serves to vindicate him, and his interests.

He will feel personally vindicated if he wins tomorrow.

If America is attacked, however, he will fall that chickens have come home to roost, and it is America's fault, not his.

Like a lawyer, he will just shuffle things around, so that he's never at fault, never to blame, but always takes the credit for anything good that happens.

If something bad happens, he won't even have been aware of it.

No blame will ever attach itself to Obama. Only credit after credit after credit.

He's like Nero.

Heartless liberalism would be a good thing, if it's the opposite of compassionate conservatism.

I see it as striking down those parts of the law that enforce morality.

I'd vote for it in a heartbeat. But Obama has no interest in lessening gov't power.

David wrote: "Even those of us who are voting for Obama hope that he does not believe everything he has said."

Good God! Oh yeah. "He said it, but we don't think he meant it." What kind of decision making is that? Who are these people?

A quote from Melanie Phillips in the UK:

"You have to pinch yourself – a Marxisant radical who all his life has been mentored by, sat at the feet of, worshipped with, befriended, endorsed the philosophy of, funded and been in turn funded, politically promoted and supported by a nexus comprising black power anti-white racists, Jew-haters, revolutionary Marxists, unrepentant former terrorists and Chicago mobsters, is on the verge of becoming President of the United States. And apparently it’s considered impolite to say so."

For the first time in my life, I'm on the verge of not being "really proud of my country."
