Mahmoud Ahmadinejad can't take it anymore.

He's felled by "exhaustion."

What does it usually mean when we hear that someone is suffering from "exhaustion"?

ADDED: Here's an AskMetafilter thread that begins with the question "What does it mean to be 'hospitalized for exhaustion'? What do they do to you in the hospital, besides let you sleep?" Most of the commenters assume, as I would that it's a polite way of saying that the person is getting treatment for depression or a drug/alcohol problem. But a couple people write about personal experiences that make "exhaustion" sound like more than a code word.

A high profile government official in Iran?

That's he's about to take a dirt nap.

George M. Spencer said...

"When Ahmadinejad declares frequently that his government represents a return to Khomeini's revolutionary ideals from which previous governments have allegedly deviated, he is suggesting that he believes it is time to return Mahdism [the belief that the messiah is coming and will usher in a new age]—and the achievement of its precursor steps—to its rightful place among the Islamic Republic's priorities....

"The Islamic Republic has survived because the elected branches of government live alongside those institutions that are not popularly elected and fall under the supervision of the supreme leader—bodies such as the Supreme National Security Council, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, armed forces, security forces, judiciary, Council of Guardians, Expediency Council, state media, and economic foundations (bonyads). The supreme leader may technically claim divine power incumbent in his representation of the Mahdi, but, in practice, he governs by balancing institutional interests and ever shifting alliances with other powerful personalities and factional interests.

Ahmadinejad has upset that balance by exceeding the limits allowed for a transient, elected official. His exclusion of some powerful figures from government, recourse to outright Mahdism, and reliance on a band of like-minded advisers have cracked the semblance of unity that had emerged among the "principle-ists," as pro-theocracy Iranian fundamentalists prefer to call themselves...

"The president's Mahdism has severe repercussions for the clerical basis of the Islamic Republic. Incumbent in the belief in the Mahdi's return is the notion that he will be opposed by the clergy. Says one such prophesy, the "religious leaders of that day will be the most evil religious leaders under the heavens as sedition and dissension will go out from them and to them will it return."

In short, a reassertion of clerical authority might signal that the regime is becoming more, not less, rational in its abandonment of overt Mahdism.

Maybe Dinner Jacket is exhausted from laughing about the total pass The One is being given, for example:

The LA Times is holding a video that shows Barack Obama celebrating with a group of Palestinians who are openly hostile towards Israel. Barack Obama even gives a toast to a former PLO operative at this celebration. If the American public saw this side of Barack Obama he would never be elected president.
But, the media refuses to release this video.

Here's the article. Good luck, Israel.

Apparently I'm not the only one.

Complaints abounded after the Backstreet Boys did their own, lengthy interpretation of the National Anthem at Game 1 of the World Series.

But I think Patti LaBelle's performance tonight in Philadelphia before Game 4 was even worse.

I know LaBelle is a Philly legend and I have compassion for her as someone also battling diabetes.

However, if the big bell at Independence Mall isn't cracked enough, LaBelle's shrieking, ear-shattering rendition surely added to the chasm within our symbol of liberty.

Had LaBelle not been from Philly, the raucous crowd here at Citizens Bank Park would have booed her. Unmercifully. Her hometown stature saved her.

It was not only bad, but long, too.

Whitney lip-synced the song. It's not in dispute.

The orchestra accompanied her performance, which caused a small flap at the time because Houston lip-synched the song at the Super Bowl.

Houston's lip-synched performance of "The Star Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV in January 1991 was released as a single, reaching the top twenty on the U.S. Hot 100 and making her the only artist to turn the national anthem into a chart hit. Houston donated her share of the proceeds to the American Red Cross.

He's felled by "exhaustion."

I wonder what caliber Mr. Exhaustion used.

Exhaustion in Arabic: استنفاد

Maybe it means they placed him next to the car exhaust.

Law professors everywhere support him, so we must listen to our betters. Or bettors. Time will tell...

Just wanted to point out that Ahma--ahma--Ahmanagonnaworkhereanymore is Persian not Arabic.

And if you think that doesn't matter, call a Persian an Arab (or vice-versa).

Persian? Where is this Persia of which you speak?

He speaks Farsi. He is a farce.
