michael farris said...: While here, I'll mention that the same criticisms were made of the Alligator when I was there (in the early-mid 80's).
From what I remember the great majority of writers were pretty (socially) liberal as you'd expect in a college paper, but they did try to be balanced and from what I recall many had specific areas they could be more right leaning about. Also, the occasional vocal conservative usually got breaks that weren't extended to the garden variety liberals (not that they appreciated or even recognized it).; 9/30/08, 7:00 PM

Icepick said...: I recently wrote about the Alligator's coverage of the Clinton/Dole campaign from 1996. Back then, the question was, "Is it worse to call a man a Nazi or a cripple?" The UF community overwhelmingly decided that calling a man a cripple was the more egregious offense.

I miss college!

The Alligator's coverage is probably more balanced than one would expect from the UF student newspaper. I imagine there are probably fewer than 100 Republicans on the campus on any given day. (That's out of an enrollment of approximately 50,000 students, and all the staff at the school.); 9/30/08, 11:56 PM
