The evidence.
Discuss.
(The photos are all from the Venice Beach "boardwalk." I'm from New Jersey, and I happen to think a boardwalk has to be made of boards. This is mainly a post about whether men should wear shorts, but you can also talk about whether "boardwalk" is a misnomer, when a potbelly on a man is charming, and — special to Trooper York — the glory of fleshy women.)

Fleshy is fine, but ugly is unworkable.
I lived in New Jersey from 1964 to 1969. Can that count as "from"?
One more topic for the post!
I was born in Delaware and lived there from 1951 to 1964.
Importantly, when I lived in Delaware, we always took summer trips to Ocean City, New Jersey. The Boardwalk there was great -- with a pier full of rides.
Venice Promenade wouldn't sound as SeaShorey as Venice Boardwalk.
It's not the legs; it's the bellies.
McCain is not in the picture. The crowd is all watching him get a henna tattoo.
I've never considered myself much of a "tit man", but the guy in the speedo has it goin' on in that department!
Seriously, though, these folks are likely out-of-towner tourists for the most part. It's the Venice boardwalk, after all. I lived there when I first moved to LA, and it's not the safest spot in town, ergo if not for the "you gotta see/go to Venice" implore-the-tourists mandate, the place would be substantially barren of humanity.
The dude with the keg-sized beer gut and those "shorts" that look more like psycho-plaid capri pants demonstrates that sometimes, medication is an insufficient remedy, and firearms may be needed to restore societal politesse.
Ann has a problem with men in shorts, and I have a problem with women in tanktops. The close-up picture of that women is obscene.
How about how annoying fish eye lenses are?
Do you ever take a picture that isn't distorted?
Granted the big fat guy in the white T shirt is pretty disgusting, but I also imagine that he is out of proportion and looks worse (if possible) than in real life.
Boardwalk is just a term, like dialing the phone, that hasn't gone out of use yet and nothing has popped up in common usage to replace it.
Joe--Annoying as a total concept: The fisheye view is annoying. The fat, misshapen people are annoying. Their clothes are annoying. Venice Beach is annoying.
I grew up in So. Cal., and went to the beach every weekend. Venice Beach was to be avoided, because it was annoying freaky, sometimes scary freaky. It was totally useless if you wanted to surf and romp around on, like, a beach. It was for...um...other activities.
I haven't seen it since the Nixon Administration, but it now looks spiffier and more touristy. Definitely more touristy. Veni, vidi, vici is right: The tourists keep the place from being Battery Park, pre-Giuliani.

You presumably wouldn't think so if she was built like Marta Costello.
How come any manner of woman, no matter how large, dimpled, and.or otherwise unattractive, can supposedly wear shorts or skirts, but NOT A SINGLE MAN can?
Like I often say (well, think, actually): "Sister. . .just because they make it in your size doesn't mean you should wear it."
The Day Of The Locust
The palms in distress
Look down on Coney Island west
Where exhaustion that cannot rest
Mills lotusless.

My grocery store can be that way on the wrong day.

I think Althouse contends that only very slender women should wear shorts. If I remember correctly... we need Ruth Anne to dig up the answer.
But, Knox, you don't expect to go running on wet sand, surf, and pick up cute girls in bikinis in your grocery store.
That's right. You couldn't do those on Venice Beach, either.
I just Cuil'ed--I mean, GOOGLED, Marta Costello.
Cute blond girl. Not obscene.
But, uh, not exactly my type.
I've never, ever heard it called "Venice Boardwalk".
I don't think I've ever heard it called "Venice Promenade" either.
Althouse makes her auspicious arrival in LA....
---And then proceeds to hit up all the wrong places, rubbing shoulders (literally) with all the most inconsequential, and unsubstantial of people !!!!
A trip that was completely ruined, shot to smithereens, even before the plane touched down !
Low-rent, inglorious, banal, and rather exhausting...but, would you expect anything less from a woman who had NYC at her fingertips, then spent every weekend (including Christmas!) running home to the Midwest !!!!!
Just love the way Althouse does things .
Get a life, Maxine.
If you're trying to provide credible evidence that something looks unflattering, you might want to use a normal-to-long rectilinear lens - short focal lengths in general in general, and fisheyes in particular, have a reputation for distorting human features in highly unflattering ways.
also, the guy in the speedo looks ridiculous because he's wearing a ridiculous speedo, and that stupid fanny-pack, and the wrong shoes and socks, and those gloves... but his legs are pretty decent - if you and gave him a tasteful shirt and some shorts-compatible footwear, putting him in actual, some reasonably-tailored shorts wouldn't be such a bad idea.
I grew up in Ocean City, NJ...even graduated from OC highschool. I loved it in both summer and winter although it was dramatically different when the summer visitors swelled it to 10 times it's off season size.
In a frigid climate I can understand why not wearing shorts would be an option for most human beings, but here in TX heat stroke is just so much less attractive than bared legs. And, since you can wear shorts 9+ months a year, your legs are never that pasty white color - so shorts are that much more acceptable.
