Proposed Althouse Blogspot Business Plan:
1. Create trainwreck
2. Collect digital Underpants
3. Use a well-known POP MUSIC CRITIC to sell digital Underpants tickets
4. Profit!
So the gnomes were Capitalists with a cause. If the thong style had been invented first, would that have delayed the literacy movement, since there would have been less demand for linen, or would it have helped, because more linen could have been used for books?
The funniest part of that episode was that it was pro-big business, which is pretty rare in Hollywood
Whatever that show is, South Park is definitely NOT Hollywood. There was a hysterically funny interview with Matt and Trey in a recent Rolling Stone. They are not your typical showbiz limousine liberals.
"Linen rags" strikes me as old news for some reason. I could've sworn I read about that in James Burke's book, Connections.
I always took that episode as a play on that old...was it an Elmer Fudd cartoon? One of these '40s/'50s era cartoons about the shoemaker elves.
Elmer's response to every question was "pwofit!" But the narrator gently corrected him that most of the money he made had to go back into growing the business. Poor Elmer didn't get his pwofit until his business was thwiving--er, thriving.

I thank you, I thank you, I thank you.
Tomorrow I have to go to a company that has announced it intends to raise profits from £3m to £8m.
I can now tell them that they have a lot of underpants.
