Agonizing. I tried to kill the pain by losing myself in looking for information about actress Maggie McNamara, who starred in the 1953 period piece, "The Moon Is Blue" at the UW Cinematheque last night. Another painful story, actually. One of the more dramatic Oscar jinxes.
I don't claim to be a sports fan -- though I did watch the end of the game. But my fortunes are tied up with the University of Wisconsin and I care about the mood of my city.
or, as Roger Kahn wrote in THE BOYS OF SUMMER (1973):
"You may glory in a team triumphant, but you love a team in defeat. Losing, after great striving, is the story of Man, who was born to sorrow, whose sweetest songs tell of saddest thought."
the movie THE MOON IS BLUE was mentioned in a late episode of M*A*S*H ... Hawkeye told Charles that the movie was banned in Boston and Charles replied, something to the ffect that everything is banned in Boston
Re: AJD's ignoble comment "We know you don't follow this stuff...":
AJD seems a hateful sort. Hangs around merely to antagonize, to jeer, to bully and whine.
English has no adequate word for this, one that describes something simultaneously hideous and sad. Not quite bathos, because unfunny, not quite saturnine, because there remains something quite pathetic about it. Words fail me in describing the online equivalent of a cantankerous old woman, whose crabbiness exposes an interior she'd like to blame on others. Or perhaps a web version of the chained-up hound, snarling and yelping at passers-by, gaining nothing for its violence, and a bark that signifies nothing.

Memo to Annie A., would-be sports fan:
Stop pretending. We know you don't follow this stuff, and we know you don't actually care.
I know your act is all about faux. But "terrible"?! Come on, that's soooooo lame.

Is Scrabble considered a sport?
I hereby challenge Althouse to a game.
I play Scrabble everyday, hence my well-developed vocabulary.
You can play online, too.
Peace, Maxine
