Do you care who got cut from "American Idol" last night?

Ack! Never wear a target on your shirt, maybe is the lesson here. And please don't pose like that! Don't aim that thing at us when you're wearing a target on your shirt. So much for Rudy Cardenas. Amy Krebs, Nicole Tranquillo -- who were you, even? We forget. Paul Kim, you made yourself memorable, but a little too memorably annoying perhaps, what with the bare feet and the grumpy attitude.

But a few interesting things happened. The formidable Chris Sligh humbled himself, apologizing for smart-mouthing Simon -- apparently because he figured out that AI voters punish kids for being disrespectful.

And, we learn, that Sanjaya Malakar is a big fan favorite. They tease us, like maybe he's in the bottom two, but they reveal he was in the top four. It was believable that he'd be in the bottom two, because he gave a startlingly weak performance. He's the only one who was told how high he placed, so something distinctive is going on with him. It's not easy to guess what it is. America fell in love with the 17-year-old sweetheart.

And we found out which celebrities are going to appear on the show this season. The one that gave me a tiny thrill: Peter Noone! Others I can remember without looking it up: Jon Bon Jovi, Diana Ross, Jennifer Lopez, Tony Bennett.

Mrs. Brown, do you know where you're going to while you're waiting for the light of your heart in San Francisco and still you're wanted...dead or alive?

I want to be the first to say, that kid needs a hair cut. Maybe I am just jealous because I have a slightly receding hairline

Speaking of hair and Peter Noone, it seems a lot of kids are sporting his old hair style these days.

Tony Bennett! Ooh, I'll have to watch that. I hope no contestant tries to sing his signature song.

I love American idol, but don't car about who goes. I like it at the begging when everyone is rubbish and you can have a few beers and laugh.

By the end they are all good and i don't laugh no more and its at that stage now.

I run a vauxhall spare company and my work is long and boring so i need the laughs, so bring back those who cant sing, or some vauxhall parts are flying out of the window!

No, but thanks for asking!

No I do not care who got cut from that show. I only watch that show once a year and it is the first show of the season if I catch it at all. I love to see earnest no-talents getting indignant.

Being an AI newbie, I had no idea that the entirety of last night's show would be taken up with eliminating the folks who had been voted off. Since I had no interest in hearing the losers sing again, I ended up fast-forwarding through pretty much the entire thing. (God, I love my TiVO.)

The business with Sanjaya is interesting, though -- and thanks for writing about it, because I missed it with all that fast-forwarding. He was really very bad on Tuesday! His hair is so annoying to me that I couldn't imagine anyone voting for him. But now I see that I am just an old fart regarding stuff like this!

Thanks, AI, for pointing out just how disconnected from popular culture I've become. I don't mind that a bit.

Two of those voted off (Amy Krebs and Paul Kim) sang better for their swansong than earlier in the week. Nerves, I suppose.

I did care, and I'm annoyed that Antonella didn't get voted off, as she had the worst performance by far. My wife thinks Sundance actually did worse, but I'm sticking with Antonella being the rock bottom. The fact that she WASN'T one of the bottom two women annoyed me a great deal.

And the deal with Sanjaya is the same deal as with George Michael when Wham! first hit the scene. (George had much more talent, of course.)

Re Sanjaya Malakar...I've only had the show on while doing other things, but he's clearly the one who stands out from the crowd. My early affections lean toward him.

If he continues to trump, we'll hear about the new masculinity, the attack on masculinity, how young girls idolize sexually non-threatening pop stars, something vaguely academic-sounding about the America's Bush-Cheney fatigue. And then the "backlash". When in reality, there's enough love to simultaneously support the Malakars and Daughtries of the pop world. In fact, there's enough love just in my own car's CD binder.

No, I don't care. I like you and much of what you have to say, but I don't visit this blog very much anymore because of posts like these that have so little substance. Television is the opiate of the people. Regardless, I wish you well, in part because there seem to be a lot of small-minded people who wish you ill.

Ruth Anne: As we learned last year, generating a cult of personality can beat talent. I suspect he's working that angle.
