"Bangalore is a lovely name. Why confuse tourists?"

Because we really, really want to call it The Town of Boiled Beans!

A year or two ago, I read a long article in the New Yorker about the Indian city of Chennai. It went about six pages before casually mentioning that this is the town formerly known as Madras. (Do we need to change the names of the shirts, too?)

At least India's a decent country. I'm still trying to figure out why we should use Myanmar instead of Burma just because of the whim of the tyrants running that poor land.

I think there's a lot more to confuse tourists there than just the town's name. So go ahead but who has to tell the Kannada language group wanting the change that it's name should be spelled Canada?

I guess we'll have to start calling these explosive boiled beans or something.

Did you notice that the Turin Olympics are going to be called the Turino Olympics.

No joke.
