Christopher B said...: The reason Dandy Andy is saying the August 3rd deadline has no legal importance is because he is pushing a theory that even though the 17th Amendment clearly states that in the case of a Senatorial vacancy the state Executive will issue writs of election and may only make a temporary appointment if the authority is granted by the state Legislature (and the Kentucky legislature rescinded that authority back in 2024 over Beshear's veto) somehow the Kentucky Constitution overrides the US Constitution and gives him the right to appoint a person to fill a vacancy of *any* office filled by a statewide election.

wildswan said...: I think that we Republicans tend to think of socialism as Russian or Cuban Communism whereas the young people tend to think of it as the Norwegian system. We think of property seizures, censorship, prison camps, of a general drabness varied by dispperances and torture. But they think of content creators, marketers, computer experts who lead good outdoor life with a social safety net against adverse moves by the economy. That's how they think of Norway; that's what they are voting for.
So perhaps we should try to get them to see that the Norwegian system has already been tried in America in Minnesota which was filled with Norwegians (and Swedes). And it was working OK sort of. But then came the Somalis, who worked against the Norwegian system. They insulted the Norwegians as white, therefore racist by definition; abused the generous welfare system the Norwegians had set up; and stole the state into a deficit. And they think they are great. And that's what will happen if we try to set up the Norwegian system across the country.; 8/3/26, 8:09 PM

Then I got home and tried to download the MLB App. No can do. Something about a security issue that caused Samsung to ban certain apps that are not to their security standards. Now I have to take this behemoth back to the store, hopefully for an exchange, or my money back.

I hate having to do this. In fact, I've looked down on the return line that usually goes outside the store, is so long. I didn't think it was an impulse buy, but maybe it was.

Althouse researching upgrading their tv years ago, now doesn't seem... anachronistic at all.

I spent some time in Sweden some 35 years ago. Their view was definitively that the high-tax welfare state was a way to purchase safety and social tranquility, essentially to buy off the lower classes. Norway has the benefit of one of the largest foreign wealth funds around, based on the excellent foresight and intelligent management of their national oil wealth, to keep their society humming. Sweden doesn't, nor does Denmark. But their quality of life is high, their happiness is high, and so is their generally placid nature. It disintegrated because none of the three Bigs could be happy with pretty well. The unions turned into pension programs that sometimes made stuff. Big Government just couldnt stop growing. And business encouraged throwing open the immigration and trade gates so they could keep wages down.

To some extent, MAGA is trying to bring back the era of the three Bigs. JD likes to talk about the German labor union system, where the trades see themselves as collaborating with owners. Trump likes Eisenhower-level government, and of course likes to keep the tech moguls under his wing. There is cultural if not so much individual memory of how good we had it back then.
