Today, it was quite clear and most interesting 36 minutes before the orb popped:

So let me go back to yesterday, that very misty morning. I have a few more pictures I wanted to show you. I caught this odd looks-out-of-focus image 9 minutes after the official pop:

5 minutes later, Meade crept through the underbrush to capture this much more comprehensible view of the same shore line, shot across the lotus field:

I wondered what he was doing in there and whiled away the moments getting another photograph of
my favorite outlook on sunrise fall foliage:

At last, he emerged, adopting the stance
he took 2 days ago, which I think of as the Big Foot pose, though I guess it's more like King Kong:

I asked him just now what he thought he was posing as. He said he thinks maybe a tree. I said, "It looks a little like
Rocky."

Just 2 kids out having a forest adventure...
Fog Bank eats Madison, then retreats. Mysterious fog fighter emerges, then slinks back into ... the underbrush.

Breaking: Fog Bank spits out Madison....is overheard saying- "yuck - too many poorly timed traffic red lights."
Thats another corner of the lake
There's something exultant about the sharp edge in the air during the first fall days, but those fall days are more poignant as you grow older. There's mortality in that sharp edge, but we get to pivot into another season or so we hope.
The wily whitetail deer are on the move. It appears the rut is going full bore (ha). I’ve seen a lot of deer over the past few days. None to my liking yet.

I suppose Van Vleck is handy as a landmark, so one can figure out where the picture was taken. For those unfamiliar with Madison, Van Vleck is that rectangular intrusion on the skyline of many of Althouse's pictures. In my day it housed the Math Department of the University of Wisconsin. It is rumored that there's a cocktail lounge on the top floor which offers excellent views and a brandy Old Fashioned to die for.
"Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins reported yesterday that earlier this year, "we told every state to send us their SNAP data so we could make sure illegal immigrants aren’t getting benefits meant for American families. 29 states stepped up. 21 blue states refused — and two SUED US FOR ASKING!"
That's because we're spending billions on benefits to illegal aliens. "
Illegal Immigrants To Be Hit Hard As SNAP and WIC Benefits Expire
More from Stephen Green:
"The organization's 2023 analysis of government data showed that "households headed by illegal immigrants make extensive use of the welfare system, particularly food assistance programs." CIS estimated that 59% of households headed up by an illegal are on one or more welfare programs, whether it's cash, food assistance, Medicaid, or housing.
Read that again. We're giving cash, food, healthcare, and housing to people who aren't even supposed to be here.
Millions of them, in fact. Even though I could have sworn that Democrats insisted up and down that sort of thing never happened."
You're correct, Ann. The first picture is perfectly composed and exposed. It's great.
Full link here. Excellent reporting.
Of course they did

Van Vleck is the math department but I'm pretty sure the big rectangular building in the photos is Van Hise. It's taller than Van Vleck. You can see Van Vleck lower and to the left of Van Hise in picture #2.
I’d prefer not to have that clunky building in the pictures.
I did an awful to of air travel in the past 2 weeks. Tucson to Denver to Heathrow to Charles DeGaulle and back. There were no glitches despite the so-called government shutdown.
We spent a week in Paris. It has changed a lot since I was there in 1999. It is much more tourist focused and crowded, really crowded. We checked out the menus of over 30 cafes, brasseries, etc. 90% of them offered the exact same dishes. What has happened?
C'est terrible!
They're going to tear Van Hise down, aren't they?
Had an anthropology course in Van Hise once. I practically lived in Van Vleck and adjacent Sterling Hall. Also taught some in Sterling.
I like the monolith. 2001 very retro now.
All great photos today!
Thanks for sharing the rest of them. That slightly 'out-of-focus' looks otherworldly.
"I’d prefer not to have that clunky building in the pictures"
On it!
I stand corrected. I had forgotten Van Hise, and it does look a whole lot like Van Vleck.
as a purveyor of the gambling arts I'm wagering all 3 races in New York, Virginia and New Jersey will be one by 2 women and i man. Virginia will have their 1st female Governor, we finally will have a Socialist to keep Bernie company in NY and Sherill be 2nd woman in a male elected race since Christie Whitman and as much as gender bias is always in affect the trump guy is a real loser. It will be a BLUE take over. Im am wagering 12-1 on Virginia,, 22-1 in NY, and because of bias against women in Jersey im a seeing around 6-1 for Mikie. After cashing big on Breeders cup Sprint (Bentornato ) and the Classic (FOREVER YOUNG) im in the zone. The righties in our family grouping are acting spastic but it has been common for them, we are hoping they dont choke on their TURKEY on Thanksgiving get together, its always such a joyful event!! :)
and even m ore important California blows out vote 42 -1 on cheating redistricting to keep up with the right wing redistricting instead of laying back like theu always do you know THAT EARLY REDISTRICTING CHEAT SCHEME...
Well, Dinky, it’s 100% that a woman will win in Virginia. Interesting that the same Barack Obama who in 2024 was chiding the brothers for not voting for a black woman was a couple days ago telling the brothers to vote for a whiter-than-white-bread woman instead of the accomplished black woman. Skin color is important to Democrats, until it isn’t.
#1 is very Monet-ish.
Correction: #2 is very Monet-ish.
That's how my 2-year-old poses when he sees a bear and "gets big" to scare it off... Keep the gun handy, annie.
Dick Cheney has died. Or Dick Cheeeeney as Chris Matthews called him.
BM writes "Skin color is important to Democrats, until it isn’t."
It is too early to call today's elections a set-back for Democrats? Losses by Spanberger, Sherrill, and Mamdani would be devastating for Democrats. Wins could be even worse. 🤣
I see that it's going to be a nil nisi bonum kind of day.
I read Zero Hedge on a regular basis. Most of the articles are interesting on wide ranging topics, until you get to the comments. They invariably descend into anti-Semitic drivel. I didn’t realize how wide ranging the disease had infected the populace.
It's weird lefties holding leftie states will be celebrated as a victory. Good for them I guess...
I'm really enjoying my Free Press subscription. $10 a month. What i like about them is that they are honest liberals, and they have left the Democrat party train. So it's refreshing.
For instance, Arctic Frost is a Real Scandal. People on the right have been reading about Arctic Frost for about a week now. Maybe some real partisans knew about it before that. I heard about it last week.
People on the left and the middle are oblivious, because old media is the propaganda arm of the Democrat party. Now, The Free Press is upsetting that applecart.
For instance, the NYT said this: “FBI investigators took normal bureaucratic steps and precautions when opening the extraordinarily sensitive inquiry into Mr. Trump’s attempts to overturn the election.”
We all know that's bullshit. And now the Free Press (and, soon, maybe CBS viewers?) will know the truth, too.
fishing expedition
the FBI wanted bank records, communications, and fundraising data on more than 400 Republican and conservative individuals and entities in the course of their probe
The most disturbing revelation is that the FBI Arctic Frost team obtained access to the telephone metadata of Republican lawmakers. That means the records of calls, but not recordings of the conversations. Those targeted include: Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, Mike Kelly, Bill Hagerty, Josh Hawley, Dan Sullivan, Tommy Tuberville, Ron Johnson, Cynthia Lummis, and Marsha Blackburn.
What I like about this, is that the FP is still claiming the 2020 election was valid. It might be, I don't know. And the FP says Trump is wrong about this, that, or the other. I'm really enjoying my honest liberal newspaper. And I'd encourage any Democrats who don't want to be Commies or Anti-Semites to check out the FP.
Also, from the article...
Cruz said last week that AT&T declined to comply with the subpoena for his phone records on advice of their in-house counsel because it violated the speech and debate clause of the Constitution. But because of an order from Judge James Boasberg, AT&T was prohibited from telling Cruz the federal government sought those records. Cruz and other GOP senators have harshly criticized Boasberg for signing off on these sweeping subpoenas. Cruz said he assumed “Boasberg printed these things out like the placemats at Denny’s—one after the other.” Now Cruz is calling for Boasberg’s impeachment.
When I heard the name Boasberg, I was like, again with this fucker?
FBI: "We want to spy on the Republican party."
Boasberg: "Sounds good! Here you go. Permission."
The fucker also approved spying on Charlie Kirk and Turning Point USA. Unbelievable.
The FBI spying on Charlie Kirk is exactly like the FBI spying on Martin Luther King Jr. It is that shameful.
It looks a lot like Rocky…
heh
the path is way too flat and easy! You got to run up the side of the hill
Democrat shill with his Fake Grieving Widow costume for Halloween.
Cheerleading Charlie Kirk's assassin and mocking his widow. That's where so many Democrats are right now. Really appalling.
Columbia university Marxist sees the need to disempower government lest another Trump seize power and ruin everything they've done youtube
He seems a little naive on poli sci and economics, evidently not covered in Marxism.
News reporting Dick Cheney has passed.
RIP, Dick Cheney. My take on him is that he loved his daughter more than he loved his politics. Good family man. As a politician, he made everybody mad at one point or another.
Obit at BBC.
opposed the release of Nelson Mandela from jail
also Donald Trump is the most dangerous threat to our republic in 248 years
I wonder what his top 10 list looks like.
1. Donald Trump
2. Martin Luther King Jr.
3. Aaron Burr
4. Robert E. Lee
5. Ralph Nader
In silhouette, it looks a bit like a medieval fortress.

Saint Croix - Dems are horrible people.
“News reporting Dick Cheney has passed”
Vaxxed?
I suppose Trump just possibly might be the 248th greatest threat in 248 years of the Republic, but with Cheney's passing everybody moves up a spot. Still one has to pay tribute to whatever it was in Cheney's reptilian system that kept him going through five heart attacks all the way to 248 years old.
WINSOME EARLESEAR lost the black vote for being MAGA and lost the MAGA VOTE for being black. She was a sluggo who couldnt even get the endorsement of trump who she was a giant sycophant.
