"Identity" refers to the "learning and identity" desk, which acted as "gatekeepers" on trans stories according to Leng, who said "These people were treated as experts simply because they were believers in the idea of gender identity. The reason they were considered to have expertise is of course because nobody else understands it. So they’re allowed to spout this gobbledegook and they’re treated as experts when it comes to which language to use."

Director general and head of news quit amid accusations of bias over Trump and trans issues at broadcaster" (The Guardian).When one of her gender critical pitches was accepted at a news meeting because it was a “great story”, Leng said that fellow journalists were so fearful they could only express support in secret. She said: “Somebody who was present slipped me a card as we were all leaving this session. It just said on the back, ‘you’re right, keep going’. She felt she couldn’t tell me directly. It was like a secret, masonic handshake.”..

The gatekeepers became the people interested in furthering the topic, because they "know" the most about it. By "know", I mean they cared enough to read all the propaganda related to it, and rather than actually doing critical study of the topic; they protected themselves from criticism by calling the work they were doing "critical studies", but critical of the inverse of whatever they were studying.
An organization that has a “learning and identity desk” is not in the news business. It is in the ideological enforcement racket.

The BBC is far-left and has been for decades. It was full of communists in 30s and 40s, and labour supporters after that. Weirdly, the top leadership, is full of Anglo-Americans, immigrants, and other non-Native brits. So if you think its controlled by crusty old Brits who went to Eaton "Old chap" and have blue blood, you're very wrong.
Mike Thompson who was head of the BBC from 2004 to 2012 was also CEO of the New York Times. Davie worked for Pepsi and Proctor and Gamble.
It's not the BBC, but I have my own little story about bias. I'm the Special Knox County (Nebraska) Attorney. I told The Knox County News (Carrie Pitzer) that none of the Knox County Deputies were properly hired because there is no certificate of appointment on file with the County Clerk as required by Neb. Rev. Stat. section 23-1704.01. It has been the law since 1866. The statute uses the word "shall" four times. The certificate of appointment also has to have the oath endorsed upon it.
But given those facts, "Judge" Pitzer wrote a story that the deputies were all properly hired because they are on the roll of Knox County employees and they have a certificate from the Nebraska Crime Commission.
But the hiring of the deputies was not done per the statute. The fact that the are on the payroll and have a piece of paper from the Nebraska Crime Commission is completely irrelevant. Red herrings.
If any Knox County deputy arrested anyone recently, the criminal defense attorney could file a motion to dismiss and it should be granted. See, Lettia James case.
The Knox County News is an ally of the former Knox County Attorney and the current Sheriff.
Thankfully, there are two other publications that should run a correct story.

The British have always had a strong thread of deception, class exclusion, and raw cowardice running through its journalism culture.

Sadly, the same phenomenon happened in medicine. The American Academy of Pediatrics pro-transgender policies were written by someone who was neither a pediatrician nor an attending physician. He was a resident physician (in training, that is) in psychiatry.
