"A Romanian worker died late on Monday after being trapped for 12 hours when the 13th-century Torre dei Conti, overlooking the ancient Forum, caved in..."

"... sending a cloud of dust and debris over tourists. Maria Zakharova, a Kremlin spokeswoman, claimed that Italian infrastructure was crumbling because funds were being diverted to backing Ukraine’s war effort. 'As long as the Italian government keeps uselessly wasting taxpayers’ money, all of Italy will collapse, from the economy to its towers,' she said on Monday on her Telegram channel...."

From "Russia blames fatal Rome tower collapse on support for Ukraine/Italy is outraged as the Kremlin links its military aid to the death of a maintenance worker in the Torre dei Conti" (London Times).

Wow, that's some cheap trolling from the Kremlin spokeslady.

The tower was built in 1238 by Richard Conti.

It seems impossible to get the elite of any Western Country to put the welfare of their citizens first. They love these foreign adventures and playing war.

The richest part of cheap trolling is how often it rings true. Trump's taught the world nothing if it hasn't learned that yet.

Romanian worker in Rome. I had to read that story 3 times yesterday to be sure that it wasn't a typo or a grossly ignorant copy editor.

This has nothing to do with the Ukraine war, as Rome must spend millions/billions per year maintaining the "ruins" of the old city. The city is half old and half ancient, and everything gets touched and molested by tourists too. A 13th century tower is relatively new.

You're not the target audience.
The Italian people are, specifically the younger people...
We in the civilized world cannot maintain standards for our own people while financing the world's wars, Boomer.

Lordy lord are you out of touch with the country's mood living there in Madison. When are you moving again?

If any of you guys haven't watched his videos on YouTube, you need to look this guy up. His philosophy is purely anti-intellectual and puts the likes of Carl Jung Friedrich Nietzsche and Fedor Dostoevsky to shame.

The collapse of the building is certainly not the result of a government that spends too little on domestic matters. Government spending in Italy is slightly more than half of gross domestic product, which itself is more than 2 trillion euros, or dollars. Military spending is less than 2% of GDP. Italian military aid to Ukraine since 2022 has totaled maybe 3 billion euros.

My wife is an Art and Architecture Professor, focused on the Renaissance. She goes to Rome every year, the next trip is in January. She saw the news just a few minutes before she had to leave, but I got the impression that she didn't consider it one of the "gems" of the City. I'll learn more later.

Russia is hurting for hard currency so cheap is what they have to do for everything, trolling included.

"You never want a serious crisis to go to waste."

Clearly the Russkis are taking their guidance from the oh-so-gentlemanly Rahm Emanuel who is credited with bringing the phrase into modern political discourse.

Blaah!

I think that you get a better quality ruin if you let it fall down every now and then. Pompeii would be nothing without the volcano.

Today I watched tiny Central American men dig six foot trenches through rocks and saturated Georgia red mud on my street for AT&T to install new cable lines. They were exhausted by 10 a.m. I checked them several times, but not enough. They were afraid of me when I approached them, likely because they though I was mad because they basically destroyed both the very necessary pounded rip-rap at the top of my road and the concrete foundation of my mailbox, which I built by hand in my workshop. Pinterist Lady, only with 30 years of actual woodwork skills.

I wasn't mad at them. I was mad at AT&T.

I've seen them for days now. I didn't think they would come this far. Next to me, they cut through the buried electrical line, because instead of using the right machinery that detects buried lines, or paying for 811 to call a contractor to identify, spray, and flag lines, AT&T just sent these illegal slaves out to risk their lives so AT&T could get more cable customers.

I officially give up on everything. It can't be fixed. Enjoy your delusions, leftists. Enjoy your denial, Rightists. Populists, get your shit together.

For some weird reason, this made me think of the Elton John song, Yellow Brick Road:

"I'm not a present for your friends to open, this boy's too young to be singing the blues."

There are 12 boys on the top of my drive right now. God knows this isn't the worst they've been used. But it's clearly too fucked up to fix.

@Tina Trent, you really shouldn't let common, minor inconveniences affect you so much.
