Please find a Bannon (or other such reliable MAGA source) to post here so we can more comfortably hear Cruz jabber about placemats at Denny's re evil libs.
BTW, in Japan I have seen two Denny's restaurant locations from one position while we were walking around Tokyo. It seems like Denny's is still quite popular in Japan. I always see a bunch of them. Kinda like people say some places in America have Starbucks locations that are very near each other.
Anywho, looking bigger picture, when I see Cruz blathering I think of Cancun and Tucker. Presumably you trust him more than I do.
A couple of things. First- Should be a simple uncontroversial law to pass. "All government employees at all levels of government shall be US citizens. Any exception must be specifically written into federal law."
Second, just last week liberals were posting that every $1.00 "invested" in SNAP returns $1.50 in economic benefits. And just yesterday Governor Tim Walz tweeted it was $1.80. And I saw at least one post today- it's $2.00! So what Walmart and Wegman's should do is fund SNAP by themselves! According to liberals, they'll make money hand over fist! They'll take in $1.50, $1.80, or $2.00 for every dollar they give out! Wow! Invest in SNAP now, before it's too late! I mean, why should only government get in on that type of return on investment?
One aspect of the shutdown rarely discussed is the 1.5 trillion. And shrinking the government workforce. Starve the beast. A hearty thank you to the Democrats!
Dismaying to read in this morning’s BLEAT about the end James Lileks’ marriage. One of his best written posts about a very sad subject. Lileks probably shares some of Althouse’s readers. https://lileks.com/bleats/archive/25/1025/53.html
"So what Walmart and Wegman's should do is fund SNAP by themselves!"
Your math will work. It'd be as if these companies raised the wages and benefits of their employees such that their employees did not get government subsidies for food/healthcare/earned-income-credit/etc.
Time will tell if that's a thing they want to do. For now it seems like they make more money when the government goes into massive debt to pay for this stuff for their employees. That's better for the bottom line.
😳Yikes, Bryce Mitchell former “Controversial UFC fighter takes back his Trump support in wild rant: 'I was fooled'”
“Mitchell said in 2019 he would beat up politicians for Trump”
“I do not like the guy at all," Mitchell said. "The first thing for me was he didn’t release the Epstein files. They’re even acting like they didn’t exist. And, of course, they’re sending Israel and Ukraine all of our tax dollars just like the numb-nuts before him did. Putting America last, and now he’s blaming the beef farmers for the price of beef. Hey, I’m not biased, man. He talked a good game, he tricked me. I was fooled. I admit it.
Now, let me tell you how bad I think this is though. This is really this bad, guys. I want y’all, if you’re a Christian, I want you to get into Revelation 13:3, and I want you to read that verse — yeah, about the Antichrist, about the one who was fatally wounded in the head; then he was miraculously healed and the whole world marveled at him and said, ‘No man can make war with him.’ Yeah, I do think that Donald Trump is that beast of Revelation 13:3. Yeah, go read it. Go read it."“
Inga… people who vote for Democrats believe Trump is Hitler or the anti-Christ. They also feel comfortable praising murder of people they have disagreements with, they believe using violence against law enforcement doing their job is justifiable in nearly all cases, they have a hatred for this nation.
What I know is that they’d better get their stuff straight and their minds right while they they still have time to do so.
I don’t know the name of the tall Senator who spoke after Graham, but he called Jack Smith a dirt bag. I believe the shit has hit the fan. Send lawyers, guns, and money.
For those of you who deer hunt from a stand. Be careful. Check your harness and your tie off. They are dated and are only good for 5 years. After that the insurance company will not cover you. We had a club member pass away from falling out of his deer stand and hanging by his harness for eight hours because he couldn't move his arms because he had his harness on wrong. Use ground blinds they're safer.
That's terrible news, Rusty. What you describe, it in almost sounds like the poor fellow crucified himself. The older you get, the higher the risk from falling. Staying on the ground is sound advice.

Trump posted a message to his social media on Thursday praising the fighter’s comments and cheering Colby Covington, another MMA fighter who has expressed support for the president.

Sassyhomo @clcisme MASK UP, SAVE LIVES. 😷❤️
I have to wonder if this is an organized effort, or just randomly a bunch of people suddenly at the same time demanding we all mask up. A strategy proven worthless, but hey! It will protect us now! Or something.
At the same time, my feed today is full of people proclaiming how great the covid vaxx was, and how Pfizer never said the vaccine would prevent infection- we all imagined that! All they said (really!) was that it would make the infection less severe. As if that were something that could be proved. Along with a bunch of other nonsense. I'm certain that effort is organized and paid for.

Sure, he's full of righteous indignation when his ox is being gored. But when the J6 grannies and innocents were getting rounded up and thrown in solitary, Cruz cheered it on and said Throw away the keys! If you don't like his principles, don't worry, he'll show you some others.

Two sons, my one son-in-law, my daughter, and one daughter-in-law, all worked for Walmart at one point in their lives. None ever received SNAP, food stamps, or other government subsidies due to low income. Amazing how if you plan your life right you don't need all that. Or maybe it's because they didn't lie on their applications.
'A couple of things. First- Should be a simple uncontroversial law to pass. "All government employees at all levels of government shall be US citizens. Any exception must be specifically written into federal law."' Well. There is a problem with people who are employed by the government, and are not US citizens. That's an issue. But to my mind, there is a much larger problem, with people who are employed by the US government, and areUS citizens, but are also citizens of a foreign, and quite possibly inimical, nation.
“Senate Republicans Block Democratic Effort to Fund SNAP During the Shutdown
The bill, introduced Wednesday by Sen. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico, would fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) after Nov. 1. The legislation rivaled a bipartisan bill by Republican Sen. Josh Hawley to fund SNAP benefits for the month of November. Hawley’s bill relied on the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Treasury Department to fund the program.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune opposed both legislations.”
SNAP benefits will run out on Saturday. USDA initially said it planned to use the more than $5 billion in contingency funds that are legally intended “for use only in such amounts and at such times as may become necessary to carry out program operations.” However, the Trump administration later changed course, claiming it was illegal for them to use that money for SNAP.
“As a matter of fact, never in the history of the United States has SNAP been allowed to lapse like this,” Luján said. “During President Trump’s first term … they tapped these same funds to allow SNAP benefits to continue to roll. Now, President Trump says that the use of SNAP contingency funds is illegal.”
So the truth is out, SNAP and WIC recipients are being held hostage to further Trump’s agenda.
Two of my sophomore advisees independently said that they wished professors wouldn't spend class time on politics. It's been a VERY long time since that's happened. I don't know whether all our students have genuinely wanted the politics or that those who didn't were cowed by the general atmosphere (or both), but it's an interesting change. I like GenZ students a lot: they're even more cynical and sarcastic than we GenX codgers are. (My own rule--and I put this on my syllabus--is that students are adults, and they and faculty are moral equals, which means that my stupid political opinions are no more valuable than their stupid political opinions. It seems to work pretty well).
Inga, so, I am assuming you are calling on Chuck Schumer to end the shutdown, right? What is the rationale for funding SNAP but leaving out all the other Americans that depend on the government reopening? The GOP is offering to reopen the government- all that need happen is for the Democrat to stop filibustering.
Again, I am going to put this right here- guess which commenter made this comment with the quote, and guess the context:
"Tonight, U.S. Senator Patty Murray made the following statement on the federal government shutdown."
“Families from across the political spectrum are sick of governing by crisis and the uncertainty it creates for businesses and communities. That’s why for six months I have fought every day for the budget that I passed in the Senate to be negotiated with the budget passed in the House. But at every turn I’ve been rebuffed by Tea Party Republicans who insist that the only way to negotiate is by holding our economy hostage in exchange for outrageous political demands."

It was the 2013 government shutdown where the House, controlled by the GOP, and the Senate, controlled by the Dems couldn't agree on a budget once again (what else is new) and the GOP House refused to pass the clean CR thus shutting down the government. A commenter, guess who, posted the following quote that criticizes the GOP for not working with the Dems to pass a budge and for not passing a clean CR that the Senate would agree to.
"So the truth is out, SNAP and WIC recipients are being held hostage to further Trump’s agenda." The Truth that is Out is that under the Biden regime, participation in SNAP doubled. At the same time as vast numbers of illegal immigrants were admitted to our country.
So the truth is out, SNAP and WIC recipients are being held hostage to further Trump’s agenda.
The Senate Democrats have voted 13 times in the last month to not pass a clean CR.
The fact you fall for such a stupid stunt - and claim it's some sort of revelation - would cause some people to think you don't have a clue as to how politics actually work.
"Dismaying to read in this morning’s BLEAT about the end James Lileks’ marriage." I have frequently been astonished by the fact that women who have been in decades-long marriages decide to end them. Realizing, I would expect, that this will be financially ruinous, and also that almost anything that they might want to do can be done without paying a feeding-frenzy of lawyers to make it legally sound. You want to cavort with gigolos in an Etruscan villa? Cool, sign up here. But reading Lileks' description of the events, I was reminded of the lyrics of a Beatles' song; "She's leaving home After living alone For so many years ....".
Been delving into Grokipedia the past few days and my overwhelming impression is that white script on black background is brutal on the eyes, difficult to read, and painful after a few paragraphs. If that doesn't change, forget it, I won't be using it.
Nice story about your family. You didn't mention the ETC. Did your family get that advantage? There are a ton of Walmart employee families with kids that do get that government ETC, and other government benefits.
With one kid, and one parent the ETC goes up to a full time person making $24/hr. (it goes to higher hourly incomes w/ more kids and/or two parents). You must understand that Walmart has employees with one kid that make less than $24/hr. Not to mention the other benefits that these Walmart employees get from the government.
Not seeing that myself, but I've seen others complain ... (and I HATE white on black) ... apparently, there's a moon/sun icon to reverse it to black on white.
Yeah, Cruz and some other R senators (did Miss Lindsey miss to grandstand?) are hopping mad. Boy, oh boy, look out!
LOL. These spineless wimps can do nothing except bloviate, help the D's and sabotage Trump. They won't do a damn thing except go their big Donors, cry a little, and ask them for money.
BTW, I just saw a snippet of video showing Mitch the Bitch, falling down on the Senate floor. Like Johnny McCain, he'd rather hold on to power to the very last then resign.
James Lileks - stopped caring about him when he turned into a crazed Anti-Trumper in 2015-2016. Usually he was apolitical, but bashing Trump and getting snobby and hysterical was too great a temptation.
And people get divorced for all kinds of reasons, good and bad. I always refuse to get into the blame game, because you don't know what really went on. For example, some people have a private face and a public face. And their private face isn't the same.
Thank you, Jim at! I will look for that icon. I'm so easily flummoxed by computer/internet irregularities, it's embarrassing. I appreciate the Althouse commentariat coming through and helping me out again...Twice just today! Love you all, even those in political opposition and those who I criticize unkindly. You make the world go around!
Yeah, brother, just went on Grokipedia and saw the moon icon, one click and voila! If Jim at hadn't told me I probably would never figure it out... I'm kind of an idiot/savant that way...mostly idiot, not too savant.
Re: Lileks There are three stops I make each morning: Althouse, Instapundit and The Bleat (Lileks). James can make everyday life interesting. I have never met him, nor spoken to him over the phone. But for some strange reason, I feel for him and his situation. He LOVES his daughter, Natalie (Gnat) who grew up and moved away to college and career. They stay in touch. He lost his job as a respected and entertaining newspaper columnist over a long period. He devoted countless hours to maintaining his house and property while his wife played tennis (I MAY be simplifying that just a tad). He and his wife have their home up for sale prior to the breakup. Hmmmm. And, as was mentioned earlier, his wife sends him a "letter" that would take five days to arrive instead of having the moral courage to sit down and say it to him face to face? Who knows what caused this stranger's marriage to fail? We know that his wife asked for the divorce, not him. I have been the victim of a divorce that I did not want, so I am not an unbiased party on the subject. I HATE that divorce is so easy. During marriage counseling where my then-wife and I went to her priest (we were married in a Catholic church) and a pastor where we worshiped together and they both said the same thing: no divorce unless physical abuse or adultery occurred. Neither did. This "religious" woman decided to divorce me anyway. We are now cordial and have been so for years -- we share a daughter, Natalie, together. I just spoke to the ex yesterday and inquired as to the health of her and her current husband. But enough about me. Lileks is such a good writer that he managed to insert the news of the pending divorce into another of his essays about his everyday life. God Bless James Lileks.
…the shutdown drama is keeping the…’surprisingly’ robust economic news out of the headlines. Corporate earnings, manufacturing and service, all robust, CPI including core all tempered and fears of inflation disappearing, looking for another 25pb from Fomc in a few days, mortgage rates dropping home buying best of the year in September. Consumer sentiment waned but blame the fear and anticipation of the political showdown. For you disgusting rich people equity indices firmly in double digit gains ytd. All great news unless you went all in on Trump hate. Dumbest businessman in the world showing how easy it is…
It's not Walmart et al that benefit from welfare. It's people who are penalized through shared/shifted burdens of responsibility of redistributive change schemes, immigration reform, outsourcing, arbitrage, and other forcings of progressive prices.
The lies are just too thick, and the problem is that it isn't just one agenda that is being pushed by powerful people, and disguised in the avalanche of lies, they have a lot of agendas, electorate engineering by changing the population, the way they successfully did in Australia is only one, and a weapon that they have is to turn on the beacon of benefits to draw people from all over the world, and then remove all vetting, all standards, so your criminal history, if you have one, means nothing, it's all forgiven!
People talk about how we are a nation of immigrants, but you know what? Those immigrant waves came at a time when there were no handouts, and everybody who showed up at Ellis Island fully expected to work for a living, and there were it can't be compared to today. There were also a couple million square miles of land not developed.
Let's not even talk about the war, and the lies there, and who knows who is telling the truth. I am guessing that the only way we peons will know who was right is when we see who owns Odessa at the end of the conflict. That will be a ground truth impossible to lie about.
Anyway, this all seems like trying to follow a football game from outside the stadium by listening to the crowd noise.
Homosexuals are gender (i.e. masculine, feminine) non-conforming and actually bigendered as couplets. Simulants are homosexuals with a heterosexual kink in physical or social expression. Physical mutilation means that sims are sexually dysfunctional and incapable of reproduction, with a lifelong need for maintenance, and progressive predisposition to entertain abortive ideation of selfie or others.
President Trump could have spent the past year making hundreds of millions from crypto. Instead, he selflessly let his sons make hundreds of millions from crypto, limiting his own income to bribes, media shakedowns, and a free plane. Will the press acknowledge this sacrifice?
@kak. Looking forward to the fat inner city chicks start shoplifting groceries en mass as they have threatened to do. They will confirm they don’t need no stinkin’ SNAP. Who needs SNAP when large Alvin Bragg is the prosecutor?
With a Cat 5 hurricane just missing the US and wrecking havoc in the Caribbean and with red flag fire season about to begin in California; dumb shit Kak wants the federal government to raid the “emergency funds” to pay for chronic problems. To be fair, that is on par with Kak’s previous understanding of economics, which is simply backwards from sound reasoning.
Kak, what is your understanding of why 5 more Democrats won't vote for the CR that would fund not just SNAP but everything that was already funded at existing levels? And THEN undertake negotiations for the new things they want?
Y’all had zero empathy for humanity when the previous administration was illegally importing anyone who could fog a mirror. Calls for the administration to stop creating a humanitarian crisis? Not a one. Now all they have to do is sign anything without free everything for people who shouldn’t be here…and your leaders can’t bring themselves to do it…
…Louisiana decision prolly gonna ruin your leaders plans anyways. Best to become part of the solution now…
game theory says they should probably just keep doing what they’re doing. With their current polices they refuse to alter into a palatable platform they need to keep their promise to the illegals above all else. Cut off the money and the illegals go home- a rational strategy on their part. Your gonna lose the next election anyways, with or without the bribed warm bodies to best to try and burn it all down and try to blame it on the adults.
It take two teams to pass a bill. Either side can end the shutdown, but are waiting for the other side to blink. The entire Senate is doing this for political advantage. Playing the team blame game is succumbing to scammers. The goal is to keep the ordinary people hating on each other like we do hear. All the while, the billionaire agenda rolls over what remains of the middle class.
I haven't been able to see any tangible advantages that were gained by the United States as a result of Trump's tariff war with China. The only positive I can see is the People's Republic is now giving lip service to fentanyl imports to the US. Other than that it looks like everything is going back to the way it was before the tariffs started.
If someone has additional information that shows what the US gained by this aggressive tactic, please share that with us.
"... Either side can end the shutdown, but are waiting for the other side to blink."
One side won the election decisively, though. When the objective becomes opening the government, a simple vote will open it right up. Only one side is voting 'no', with a few individual exceptions on both side. The weaker argument is the one that votes to keep it closed, while complaining about funds running out.
Howard - No. The R''s have placed clean CR's what 12 + times? the Dems are voting no. The dems use Americans as pawns. Why? they are all scared of that idiot OAC. Sandy Cortez from Westchester.
Obamacare is ineffective and unpopular - and a huge tax payer funded pile of hot crap. ... why the left opened it up to more well-to-do during COVID. O-Care is also why so many health care company execs make big money. something you leftists claim to hate.
Sandy Cortez - From Westchester - a creepy "like" leftist - is "like" in charge of the D-party. so sad. If true - the D's are all Hollywood theater freaks. they demand & get wild mentally ill insane applause from their cultists. Soviets - all.
“As a matter of fact, never in the history of the United States (since 1939 when who else but FDR started food stamps) has SNAP been allowed to lapse like this,” Luján said. I think the union will survive this catastrophe.
BTW- history shows it's bad for a government- sometimes really, really bad, to fail to pay it's troops. I think we went over 200 years before doing that.
"Anyway, this all seems like trying to follow a football game from outside the stadium by listening to the crowd noise." I've done that a time or two. I could usually tell who was winning. Maybe if a football game involved several thousand different teams, and most players were on several of them simultaneously.
Senate Minority Leader AOC has told Schumer to create a fake problem to solve to end the shut down. He's gonna have Senate Dems vote for the CR as the only way to restore SNAP. It's all a fake sideshow.
Just a 1-year trade truce? “It was an amazing meeting".
Who is Trump trying to kid ?
China just performed a masterclass in dealing with Trump. What China demonstrated, however, is that it has the ability to use targeted leverage in ways that can create pain for a U.S. administration. e.g. in particular by doing damage to U.S. agricultural exporters, who are a core part of the Trump coalition.
I'm not clear about what was actually achieved by Trump. First he goes bananas and imposes absurd tariffs on China. Then China responds by restricting rare earth exports to the US and stops buying or reducing overall US agricultural imports, including soybeans, beef, pork, wheat, corn, and sorghum, in retaliation for US tariffs. Then Trump announces a backtracking and China eases off on countermeasures.
So what exactly has been accomplished and why is Trump crowing about reverting back to square one?

I have to wonder if this is an organized effort, or just randomly a bunch of people suddenly at the same time demanding we all mask up. A strategy proven worthless, but hey! It will protect us now! Or something.
At the same time, my feed today is full of people proclaiming how great the covid vaxx was, and how Pfizer never said the vaccine would prevent infection- we all imagined that! All they said (really!) was that it would make the infection less severe. As if that were something that could be proved. Along with a bunch of other nonsense. "So what Walmart and Wegman's should do is fund SNAP by themselves!"
Your math will work. It'd be as if these companies raised the wages and benefits of their employees such that their employees did not get government subsidies for food/healthcare/earned-income-credit/etc.
Any exception must be specifically written into federal law."'
Well. There is a problem with people who are employed by the government, and are not US citizens. That's an issue.
But to my mind, there is a much larger problem, with people who are employed by the US government, and areUS citizens, but are also citizens of a foreign, and quite possibly inimical, nation.
Peachy? Care to address This one?
https://www.notus.org/senate/senate-republicans-block-snap-funds-shutdown-wic

"So the truth is out, SNAP and WIC recipients are being held hostage to further Trump’s agenda."
The Truth that is Out is that under the Biden regime, participation in SNAP doubled.
"Dismaying to read in this morning’s BLEAT about the end James Lileks’ marriage."
I have frequently been astonished by the fact that women who have been in decades-long marriages decide to end them. Realizing, I would expect, that this will be financially ruinous, and also that almost anything that they might want to do can be done without paying a feeding-frenzy of lawyers to make it legally sound. You want to cavort with gigolos in an Etruscan villa? Cool, sign up here.
But reading Lileks' description of the events, I was reminded of the lyrics of a Beatles' song;
"She's leaving home
After living alone
For so many years ....".
Been delving into Grokipedia the past few days and my overwhelming impression is that white script on black background is brutal on the eyes, difficult to read, and painful after a few paragraphs. If that doesn't change, forget it, I won't be using it.
Gospace,
Nice story about your family.

"Dismaying to read in this morning’s BLEAT about the end James Lileks’ marriage."
The Bleat has been my first stop every morning since 1998. We used to exchange e-mails way, way back in the day.
I read that this morning. My wife and I (27 years) talked about it.
None of us know what goes on in another's marriage ... nor should we, imo.
But for her to text him - while he's in England - that a letter is coming is bullshit.

Just to be clear who’s to blame for SNAP cutoff:
1. Trump administration claims that a $5B emergency fund can’t be used for it.
2. Thune said Trump wants to use SNAP cutoff as leverage.
3. 22 Dem states filed a lawsuit about it.
4. Dems willing to join many Republicans for SNAP bill but Thune is blocking vote.

Keeping the middle class hating and blaming the powerless poor and the destitute is the goal. Mission accomplished
