Let's take a look at that "Major Events Timeline" on the whitehouse.gov webpage.

My screengrab from the page:

Click the little arrow... there's more:

And there's one more panel:

Check the details. I'm sure "upgrading the historic 1902 structure" is wrong. I agree that the "main residence" is preserved, but there seems to be nothing left of "the historic 1902 structure," the old East Wing. Maybe the underground part? And though Obama may have met with "members of the Muslim Brotherhood" in the White House, that photograph of him was taken in Kenya, not at the White House. As for the famous photo of Hunter Biden enjoying a bath, that was not a White House bathtub. Was it?

Anyway, highlighting the lowlights of Democratic administrations — replete with semi-nudity — that's rich. "Major events" ≈ most embarrassing events.

This is a good example of Donald Trump always moving forward, always fighting back. Oppose him, and this is what you get.

I think this is what you get no matter how you feel about him. Poor planning, constant contradiction, and a “damn the torpedoes” approach to life that mistakes mockery for strength, that’s his brand. And, unfortunately, it’s become the brand of a political party that’s been foolish enough to anoint him

Did you check the possible definitions of the word upgrade? I’m sure you did not…

“I think this is what you get no matter how you feel about him.“

Not sure what this means. He was elected to fix things and challenge the deep state. There was bound to be a bit of friction along the way. There’s no foolishness in the party, just courage to accept any superficial bumps and bruises so long as the mission is progressing, which it is, in spades.

rehajm said...

Let’s ask the arbiter of all truths, Grok: yes, here’s one Informally, upgrade can describe replacing something (or someone) with a better alternative, often used humorously, e.g., "They upgraded their old car for a sleek new model."

I see no objections to the lack of accurate visuals for the Bill Clinton scandal. Trump is a merciful king…

Dems on Clinton: "He gets adulterous BJs in the West Wing, but he's protecting abortion, so I don't mind."

MAGA on Trump: "He's tearing down some old building, but he's protecting the American citizen, so I don't mind." CC, JSM

The BJ's, the Brotherhood, the coke and the trans-boobs were all at the White House. The pics are just handy references.
Trump is reminding everyone of the "respect" which Dems have accorded the "sacred" building.

rehajm said...

If they had any sense this would make them embarrassed for supporting them. Instead they try to defend…

Ann Althouse said...

We all get what he gives, whether we are the one who provoked him or not. His biggest fans love his outlandish response. Those of us in the middle get what everyone else gets.

rehajm said...

Yah, those of us who risked taking a stand had to take what is depicted. Guess that was easier to take or something…

Should have included the Clintons taking property out of the White House. It is the People’s House until they need furniture for their new home.

Shouting Thomas said...

His “outlandish response” seems justified to me. They tried to destroy his business, put him in jail for life, and kill him. And Trump makes us laugh. He’s amazing.

Upgrade? Maybe they should call it the Ballroom of Theseus.

There are a number of things about Trump that are less than perfect.

But I appreciate that he's the first national leader who's not been afraid to engage with the Democrat Party, answer them back and give better than he gets.

I remember John McCain refusing to discuss Reverend Wright, as if it was beneath his dignity. When he refused to stick Wright up Obama's butt, I thought well, he just conceded the election.

I remember George W. Bush refusing to respond to Democrat insults and lies. It was beneath his dignity. I guess he was looking forward to how they would regard him after he left office. Same with Romney.

Trump identifies what's wrong, what he can do about it as President, and does his best to rectify the situation. It's what I voted for.

So he bruises a lot of Democrat feelings - and pocketbooks - along the way? So much the better.

’His biggest fans love his outlandish response.’

That timeline is hilarious and not outlandish at all, unless some folks are embarrassed by the reminder of absurdities like tranny day or the Muslim Brotherhood visiting the White House…

Did someone choose the tranny & Hunter pics for the hands on boobs?
The wording is sloppy--makes me wonder if Trump wrote it himself. 90,000 sq ft is almost two acres. That can't be just the ballroom but the entire rebuild, which includes the long corridor (probably adds a basement to it). The entire deceased East Wing was built in 1942 but the corridor by TR in 1902. There are two floors below ground that Truman added to the Residence.

Jamie said...

I echo boatbuilder @6:43 - the left are saying that Trump doesn't respect the White House. The timeline shows how recent Democrat office hiders have shown their respect.

Of course there could be countervailing images from Trump's administrations - I'm thinking of the day when the Resolute Desk* was covered with wrapped McDonald's sandwiches, but even so, is there a more American company than McDonald's? Fast food isn't inherently disrespectful in that context.

* I think it was the storied desk. Could have been some other flat surface. I love that so many people now know the name of the desk because of the ridiculously fun National Treasure movie - it's a go-to for me when I'm feeling low. The capers! The mugging! The patriotism!

Trump's creative version of the graphic "Photo Not Available."

Sigh. Office HOLDERS, although they all did hide a lot of things.

It would not surprise me if the finished building exceeds its visible footprint. The WH bowling alley extends underground in front of the North Portico, and there are shops under the driveway.
Ground floor floor plan

There was a photo of Trump with McD's covering the table in the State Dining Room for a champion team visit. Was that during a shutdown?

Kind of funny that Trump’s response to the Left’s ridiculousness is outlandish, and not the fact that the Left refuses to get out of the 20% lane in to begin with.

john mosby said...

For 50 years, there's been a ban on saying things everyone knows in polite company. Ironically, minority comedians are exempt from the ban: see, eg, George Lopez on Mexicans vs Messicans, or the many Chris Rock and Dave Chapelle bits. But politicians, journalists, scholars - couldn't do it. Even simple, uncontrovertible statements like "affirmative action means that sometimes the best-qualified person doesn't get the job," or "full trans rights mean eroded women's rights." The left doesn't respond with "yes, but that cost is worth it" - they respond with "shut up, bigot. And you're fired."

And that has been burning people up inside for 50 years.

Trump takes the conversation you could previously have only with your most trusted family and friends, and makes it the national conversation. CC, JSM

I'm not a fan of the flag poles. My idiot next door neighbor's moron son joined the military and in a burst of patriotic fervor, he installed a large flag pole on his front lawn. It is so stupid looking. And now it's even slightly angled. Come to think of it, I've never seen a flag flying on it. Not even on the Fourth of July.

Tina Trent said...

What an odd thing to hate, Spiros. I guess it has all turned out well that you don't live next to the White House.

It is interesting (though unsurprising) that Trump's response to the fake outrage over the demolition photos is to go on offense and point out all the horrible things dems did in regard to the WH. The traditional, expected GOP approach would just be to ask people to withhold judgment on the project until they see the final result.

If Reagan was the Great Communicator, maybe Trump should be known as the Great Counterpuncher.

Aggie said...

I'm hoping the joke is temporary and the page is restored to something a little more even-handed soon. Are two flagpoles a national event of importance? If so, where is the Watergate scandal? Where is Teapot Dome? I get the joking around and the repartee, but the insouciance is inappropriate and unserious. I want to see America great. Focus on that. Focus on getting the government opened again and the budget balanced, and put that on the timeline.

Trans day of visibility? Homosexuals and/or simulants (i.e. homosexuals with a heterosexual kink)? Perhaps a cause to proudly celebrate albinophobia in parades, projected on white walls, hanging from poles, attached to bumpers.

The Obamacares transition of debt to progressive debt.

The gerrymandering of American civil liberties in the woke of ethnic Springs and catastrophic anthropogenic immigration reform.

You know Trump is a perfectionist and he loves improving things. Especially in the world of building and construciton.
That's his thing.
He probably does want to rip the whole WH down and re-build it with modern building techniques - but of course keep the grand Neo-Classical styling.

I'm OK with it. Beats jackwad Obama wasting OUR money on bullshit.

You're going to have a long wait if you're expecting the president to make America great. What I voted for. What the American people voted for was to have him remove all the government impediments that prevents US from making America great. We're going to make America great. Our vision. Our energy. When we're left alone to do it we're very good at it.

@Rusty, putting trannies on the White House timeline, or Hunter on a crack high, is not contributing to the effort, it's squandering an opportunity in the name of 'getting even'. He's not going to get even. I like counter-punching as much as the next guy, but I also expect the President to abide by what he promised to do.

bagoh20 said...

If you think Trump is out of line with any of this, just imagine the things he's highlighting actually happened in his White House instead of the Dems', and tell me how you would react to him then.
Can you imagine if the Trump had sex with his intern while on the phone with world leaders, or had strippers on the lawn outside celebrating heterosexuality?
Yea, spare me the partisan outrage over posting some well-publicized historic photos of his critics and their heroes.

Did he promise not to point out Dem hypocrisy online? Did he promise to cover up the events depicted? I must have missed that promise.

Also, if putting those sordid events on the timeline is distasteful, shouldn't it be way more distasteful to have actually committed those sordid acts?

When the Democrats are back in the White House, and it will happen at some point, that President will tear down new ballroom and replace it with either a replica of the old East Wing or a mosque.

Since democrats, leftists are convinced that history began on 01/20/2025, President Trump is taking the opportunity to show that democrats, leftists are lying sacks of bovine scatology.

I get what Althouse is saying. Although I find the new Whitehouse page funny and a novel approach to countering his opponents’ objections to the tear down- I’m also saddened. It reminds me of the direction exhibits have been going at Monticello, Mt. Vernon, the Smithsonian, the AP US Gov course, and my kids’ school curriculums in general. “Oh, you admire the Founders? Let us tell you about the worst things they ever did, while we score points for our political side under cover of what should be a neutral platform”. Progressives are blind to how often the rest of us feel these tiresome digs. But there’s something about this that feels similar to me; although Trump has executed his with more humor, timeliness, shock, and graphic design acumen.

I wish we weren’t in this negativity spiral, and could still have nice things.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Fake outrage meet fake timeline. I wish Althouse appreciated Trump’s impulse to respond with humor to the left in this era defined by every democrat crying “Tyrant!” and “Hitler!” every time they see a camera. Just think how peaceful America would be if democrats stopped siccing mobs on law enforcement and didn’t keep labeling every arrest a “kidnapping.”

Every day the Gutfeld thesis proves more correct. “Pointing and laughing is so much more civilized than pointing and shooting.”

But the Left has the opposite opinion. They don’t “get” the idea of peace or coexistence.
