"Bobby’s doing the eulogy and in the middle of it, his older brother—of which he only has one, Joe Kennedy, former congressman from Massachusetts—starts cursing him and throwing a scene."

"In his mother’s funeral. This happened?! You were there? You witnessed it.... Talk about the physiological response in your body when this was happening."

Billy Bush was pressing Cheryl Hines about something she wrote about in her forthcoming book "Unscripted" (commission earned).

I only know one thing about Billy Bush — his "grab them by the pussy" conversation with Trump — and I have to suspect him of seeking similar attention when he tries to elicit details of the "physiological response in [Hine's] body."

But that's a side track. We need to pay attention to the scene Hines is describing — RFK Jr. heckled viciously as he's in the middle of delivering a eulogy for his mother:

Cheryl Hines answers:
I was once again surprised.... So he was... having his issues, and somebody took him out of the church.... And then suddenly the priest gets up and just walks right up while Bobby was delivering the eulogy... interrupted him. I mean, everybody was speechless....

Bush: "And the guy just gives the hook and off he goes?" Here's an old clip of Buster Keaton getting the hook literally (in a vaudeville setting).

Well, the priest is looking at who puts what into the collection tray. You have to be cognizant of that. I’m not saying they all do, but you have to be cognizant of who’s funding your church. And I’m guessing the Kennedys might be pretty good to the church.

 Cheryl Hines:

It was a crazy moment because I think the people in the back of the church did not know what was going on in the front. That was happening in the front row. But all of a sudden they see Bobby giving a beautiful speech... and he really took time to write this beautiful eulogy, and all they see is the priest telling him to leave. And Bobby, to his credit, he gracefully left and sat down, and I was so mad. I was so mad at the brother for being disrespectful, at the priest for being disrespectful. I was mad that suddenly it wasn’t about Ethel. We were there to mourn Ethel and to celebrate her life.... Oh, she would have been mad.... And then later the priest apologized and said, “I couldn’t hear what you were saying.” Told that to Bobby. “I just saw somebody having this reaction, so I thought you must have been saying something that was sparking a reaction.”

I saw this exchange on TikTok yesterday and sent it to a couple people, but then this morning, I thought this must be AI. It's too weird. It happened a year ago and it wasn't in the news. Wouldn't this have made the news if it happened? Well, I'm pretty sure now this is real. It's coming out — after a year of silence — because Hines has chosen to tell the story in her book. The big question is why was this news suppressed? It was a private family service at the Kennedy Compound. An unfortunate family squabble. Draw the curtain and be respectful... at least until somebody wants to use the anecdote in her memoir.

Apparently it's not as easy to be a Kennedy as it seems to be to those who are in thrall to the Kennedys.

Ethel Kennedy died in October of last year- so the funeral was after RFK had endorsed Trump.

I'm sure stuff like this happened within families during the lead up to the Civil War. Just hard to take when you realize it's over the absolute moral urgency of electing Kamala Harris, so that the policies of that complete idiot Joe Biden may continue unobstructed. Anyone opposed to that is deploreable, beyond redemption, should never darken the door of our church again.

Jackie wanted to keep her kids away from Bobby and Ethel's wild, undisciplined brood. It sort of worked for John Jr. Didn't do much for Caroline, though she'll probably become an ambassadress again if the Democrats win back the White House.

Did Hines really make this public just to sell the book? It sounds like she had plenty of reason to get back at Joe III and the rest of the family. Civility, decency, maturity would urge keeping the story private, but if those were the governing values in that family and its environment would the incident have happened?

I’m glad Cheryl Hines is doing this. Larry David, her former boss wrote a vicious piece about Trump - in my opinion, to put pressure on the Hines/Kennedy marriage. I’m glad it didn’t work.

I am guessing Hines decided to open up about it because the family has continued to attack her husband publicly and almost certainly privately- you eventually return fire even if you probably shouldn't.

This time I am genuinely puzzled at Althouse's wording:

Bush did not seek that attention. I don't know the provenance of the recording (we had no video of it) but I recall that at the time it was secretly recorded (unlike Jay Jones' texts) Billy was a very junior NBC talent in comparison to Mr. #1 Show Trump at the network and he showed the normal show business deference to Trump, laughing at his "wit" etc. He shmoozed. That's what they do.

I don't recall Bush "seeking attention" in that episode and in fact he truly regretted his passivity after the tape came out and he got shit for laughing at the comment highlighted above. A comment that is so often taken out of context by our LIV fellow commenters.

When I have time I'll see if the host addressed that already or not.

The Kennedys are American, not Irish.
From Joe da bootlegger having an affair w/Gloria Swanson on down, this is American behavior, not Irish. East-Coast Americans, to be precise...

They played at being Irish Catholics, but look at their track record. Pure American Catholics, with all the indulgence and annulments, drugs and deaths. That's not Irish. That's East Coast wealthy American, god love em. Joe Biden is not Irish either, hth. He's a Delaware boy, born n bred with all their fine ethics... Ann's daddy too? lol

Let me stop you right there. I did NOT say that he was "seeking... attention" when he engaged Trump in that "pussy" conversation. But he absolutely GOT attention for it.

Now he has a podcast. NOW he is "seeking... attention" and having experienced extreme attention over a conversation that riveted focus on a female body part, I SUSPECT him of consciously using the same focus of attention that happened to be effective that other time. So it's a "similar attention" he may be hoping to get: If I can get Cheryl to talk about her body, then the world will be talking about Billy Bush again.

I don't know what he was thinking either time. But my suspicion related to this recent bizarre locution: "Talk about the physiological response in your body when this was happening."

Who talks like that and why?!

Officially, eulogies are not allowed at a Catholic funeral mass. (The rule is often elided by using a fudge called "words of remembrance".) And, contrary to what Cheryl Hines said, the funeral mass was not supposed to be "about Ethel". Assuming that it actually happened as described, it sounds to me as if RFK Jr. may have chosen to give a eulogy after being told it was not allowed. In which case, the priest telling him to stop was entirely appropriate.

Colleen Brown said...

The priest should not have allowed a eulogy in the first place. The purpose of a Catholic funeral is to pray for the repose of the deceased person's soul - not to celebrate her life. The proper place for the eulogy is at the wake. I guess the priest couldn't say "no" to the Kennedys.

Added: there was a remembrance service a few days later with eulogies, which tends to support the notion that RFK Jr. was speaking without authorization. This may seem odd to none Catholics but going into the sanctuary and speaking without permission is absolutely not allowed in a Catholic church.

I've never been to a Catholic funeral where there was not a eulogy/words of rememberance.

When my mother died 19 years ago, my two older sisters were supposed to go to the pulpit to make some appropriate remarks. When neither arose after being called upon, I could see they were too broken up to do so. So I got up and winged 5 minutes. Turned out fine.

I started it like I started every public speaking episode "A wise judge told me once when you have to give a talk, be brief, be sincere and be seated".

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Who talks like that and why?!

So far that is unanswerable. It is strangely repetitive way to word a question and a bizarre question in itself.

"How did you feel?" -- normal question.

Then he adds "physiologically," which is where it gets weird. Feelings are usually emotional responses, but he wants to know what her body was feeling apparently. In case she still might answer about her emotions he follows that up with "in your body."

No one talks like that IRL. Nothing after "How did you feel?" makes sense to me.

As always. Notice how the NY Times, Washington Post, ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC and CNN are completely devoid of news about the "Arctic Frost" scandal that broke yesterday, which looks like the closest this country has ever come to having its own Stasi secret police supporting a one-party dictatorship.

However much you hate the news media scum and the Democrat Party, if I may be redundant, it's not enough. Putin and Xi and Maduro and all the Muslim terrorists who ever lived, put together, are less of a threat to America.

Authoritarianism is how people come to support authoritarians, but on the other side. What the Left has done to this country is so evil and dangerous that almost anything Trump does to destroy them is becoming acceptable, or at least forgivable.

I am not yet at the point of wanting him to drop Jack Smith or Judge Boasberg out of a helicopter over the open ocean like Pinochet, but let's see where the coming investigation leads.

Michel said...

Mike (MJB Wolf), a lot will depend on context, and is all speculative in any case. I put a lot of emphasis on the priest telling him to leave as proof it wasn’t authorized. That said, it is possible that the priest decided, seeing disunity in the family, to stop a eulogy he had previously allowed on pastoral grounds.

The big story here is that this was never a big story. Billy Bush was a Bush so all he had to do was listen passively to some crude remarks to get fired. The senior Bush pinched a few fannies as he slumped into his nineties and it was a much bigger story than that poor girl whose throat got cut.......It's not the stories they tell about the Kennedy family that count. It's the stories that never get told. There must be dozens or maybe even hundreds or possibly thousands of women who have stories to tell, and they'll never get told.

Doubtful.
Cheryl isn't telling us why Joe objected either. It was a Mass, right? He might have written the most beautiful thing, but it was not the time nor place. The family objected, the priest intervened. Nothing about billy bush's snide remark about the collection plate holds true. Bobby is a Kennedy too. He's ridden the name and put his coins in the plate too, no doubt, for the forgiveness of sins... All those dead Kennedy's from drug use/accidents on him, they say, as he pushed/introduced the younger ones to drugs back in the day...

The book will address her affair with RFK Jr. as part of a broader recounting of her decade covering Trumpworld, MAGA politics, and personal scandals—including her fallout with Lizza and career fallout from the affair.”
