Not belittling this event at all, but I can't say that I am feeling the vibe. I didn't follow Charlie Kirk and his movement. I am cognizant, however, that while Kirk may be inspiring a certain level of revealing derangement in the Progressive Left, it would also seem that there are certain levels of opportunistic political capital being harvested on the right as well. I hope that the conservatives have the decency to honor him without a certain unseemly eagerness to advance their political cred.

I know people who went to the grave saying Kent State was the turning point for them. I see stuff about the resisting the unsavory nature of ‘political points’ juxtaposed to prominent Democrats who seemed to be trying to say without actually saying Kirk’s been dead almost three days and Trump’s still President- what to we have to do? Ann, I'm trying to figure that out too. All I can figure is that she was married to another Kennedy family member when the daughter was born and when she became either grass or sod widda (old E. Texas expression for defining whether the former husband is alive (grass) or dead (sod)) the married RFK III. So, a cousin (not a niece, unless it was his brother) by lineage and a step granddaughter.

In Spanish/Hispanic custom, it is common to call a close non-relative an "Uncle" or an "Aunt" (Tito and Tita). Friends of the parents, etc. It seems quite natural to me, but I come from that culture. Hence a "neice", for social purposes, seems natural, to claim a reciprocal relationship on the part of her "Tito". Maybe RFK has absorbed some of that.

Its got a literal meaning and a social meaning. And for that there isnt really a good English translation.

@buwaya, the custom of calling older family friends 'Uncle' or 'Auntie' is common in the Caribbean as well.

There are several people in my extended family and even non-relatives who call me "Uncle Biff". While I normally wouldn't refer to them as nieces or nephews, I can imagine scenarios where it would feel completely natural to do so.
As @buwaya suggested, maybe it comes more easily to some cultures than others. I can see it happening with my own extended Italian-American side of the family. I wouldn't be surprised if Irish-Americans may do it, too. Maybe loosely a Catholic thing?

I suspect it is more of an overall Catholic thing. When the first of my high school/college friends - with German and Irish ancestry predominating - started having kids, we had the same pattern - until the kids starting having their own autonomy as teenagers and the title was dropped.

In my mother’s large - mostly German with some lesser amount of French and Spanish ancestry - family, anyone in a group “down” a generation or more is loosely referred to as nieces/nephews - as long as one’s direct progeny are not included in the group. Then the group as a whole is referred to as kids/grandkids. If a more precise explanation of the relationship is needed, it can be provided, of course.
Buwaya, while I like the word pesado I don't see any reason to replace the perfectly apt description of douchebag in this particular case.
