I am convinced that the conflict in America is no longer between Republicans and Democrats, or between Conservatives and Liberals, or between the Right Wing and the Left Wing. The conflict is between those who want another American Civil War, and those who do not want another American Civil War. Supporters of another Civil War exist on both sides of the political spectrum. It is up to us who do not want another American Civil War to intervene and make sure that it doesn't happen.

Horse shit. One side simply wants to be left alone while the other side refuses to do so ... to the point of where they're now opening fire on those who simply want to be left alone.

Don't want a civil war? Well, you might want to stop shooting at us.

Reasonable people accept the need to protect children, prevent fraud and defamation and stop incitement to violence.

In the United States, in recent years, we have tended to elect those people to become our president.

They want to be able to spread their own lies and also to suppress the truth. Eventually the Truth will tend to manifest itself, despite the efforts of autocrats and tyrants to suppress it.

With rare exceptions the right-wing's purported commitment to "free speech" was always obviously fraudulent. If someone believes deeply in rigid, hard-wired, and steep social hierarchies, then there isn't going to be a commitment to the idea of universal rights. Universal rights come from a belief or at least commitment to fundamental equality.

The central motivation behind right-wing "free speech" campaigns was more of an issue of right-wing voices -- particularly ones funded by billionaires -- wanting to be amplified and given a privileged place that they weren't able to earn simply on the merits.

Kakistocracy said...

The center and center-left "cancel culture" side of the equation was being driven by market forces and in some cases by groups internally policing speech codes within groups. Not by state power. That is a critical difference here.

The right is using the power of the state to try to silence voices for merely exercising opinions that are disfavored by the current administration. There is a reason that the first amendment is baked into the U.S. Constitutional order. The first amendment was also originally a restraint on federal power as well (later extended to all governmental authority).

Part of the issue right now is that the right-wing movement in the United States hates the Constitutional order and system of restraints that it imposes on political leaders. We are not dealing with a real equivalence.

Searching Althouse blog Charlie Kirk found no expressions of sympathy or anger at assassination from our "hostess". Additionally, nothing on the monster killing an innocent young woman on a Charlotte train. The picture of the monster looming over the terrified ,dying young woman will be with me forever.

No. More both-side-ism. Lefties need to look in the mirror.

Kirk was prepared to debate 18 to 20 year old college students. For some reason, he never engaged the professors, which is not surprising. He picked up rhetorical tricks from years of listening to conservative AM talk radio. Substantively, he had almost nothing to offer. The fact that he was still doing this at 31, speaks volumes. Kirk's views on a number of issues are right-wing even by U.S. standards. To his credit, he had some genuine beliefs. But outside of right wing circles, I doubt that anyone will know his name in 20 years. The fact that his legacy is likely to be associated with the repression of free speech, rather than the support of free speech, undermines whatever legacy he might have had.

The key to good satire is subtlety, and that was flawless.

Kak writes, "The fact that his legacy is likely to be associated with the repression of free speech..."

That's inevitable when the assassinated one is shot in the throat by a Democrat for speaking freely, just as Abe Lincoln is remembered for being shot in the head by another Democrat for freeing slaves.

Prior to Kirk’s arrival on the college scene, who was debating / indoctrinating the aforementioned 18-20 year olds? Why none other than the college professors. After Kirk arrived, the playing field started to tilt in conservative Christian’s favor. He opened young people’s eyes.

Were professors prohibited from attending these events and engaging in the conversation?

It's democrat run states that have laws on the books punishing you for telling the truth. Well, TBH, the feds have a hand in this also. Likely from bureaucratic decisions rather then explicit congress passed law.

You doubt me?

Just "misgender" someone at work and tell me what happens. Misgendering someone is telling the truth. Twisted by antidiscrimination laws into harassment.

Kirk sat at a tent on campus. Everybody was free to come and engage with him if they chose to. Watch the conversation Kirk had with Jordan Peterson just 4 months ago where Kirk detailed his journey from High School to the college campuses all over the country.

Quite a few of his utube clips showed him debating professors. They were less prepared than the leftist college kids. What advantage do you think you get by lying? It seems to be a constant thing with you.

This is a law firm guide to misgendering:

It is basically crap that says the mentally ill must be catered to so we don't hurt their feelings. My feelings? The mentally ill deserve no such consideration. Truth is truth. You are what you are, and cannot change it.

This from the guide: Freedom of Speech vs. Respect for Identity

Some argue that forcing people to use certain pronouns violates their freedom of speech. But isn't respect for a person's identity just as crucial?

Answer: No. Going along with a lie is wrong on many levels.
