RCOCEAN II said...: Movie Review - The Collector (1965) nominated for 3 AA, including best picture. Based on the John Fowles Novel, a man kidnapps a young women and holds her against her will because he just wants to be with her. She must outwit him in order to escape.

Good movie of its kind. Don't know why it got a AA nomination. Of course, the Academy alway loved Wyler. Good acting. But story is overly familiar and its really just a well-made "stalker" movie. From here it was just one more baby step to the stalker-serial killers.; 9/15/25, 7:49 PM
buwaya said...: Trade is driven by many factors. One thats being overlooked lately is the fact that the USDollar is way down. This is perhaps the thing that affects me the most, as my income is in dollars, and my expenses are in Euros. No bueno.
US tarriffs make US imports more expensive, but exchange rates are probably more significant. Conversely a cheap dollar makes US exports more attractive.

Immediately after the Kirk assassination, the word was "Groyper," which no normal person had heard of before, and turned out not to be easily or unambiguously defined: I still can't tell if it's a self-referential name like Juggalo (for fans of Insane Clown Posse), or an insult being applied by outsiders.

And then a few hours ago it clicked. This was the same exact thing as the dreaded "Boogaloo Boys" who (if I'm remembering correctly) were for a while Public Enemy Number 1 and were going to descend upon every peaceful leftist gathering and start murdering people. I have some friends who are extremely conservative (in absolute terms, not relative to everyone around me at a small liberal arts college in Massachusetts), and none of them had ever HEARD of these Boogaloo Boys. And yet there was post after post after post denouncing them, warning against them, and tarring normal political discourse with its "association" with the Boogaloo Boys.
By the way, has anyone heard anything at all about those terrifying Boogaloo Boys? Have they been murdering progressives while yelling "Viva Charlie Kirk?" You'd think they would, given how out of control and monstrous they were.; 9/15/25, 9:26 PM

It must be your imagination. Beto O'Rourke looks like he could slip into a Hyannisport family reunion and be more welcome than RFK Jr. I don't see much Irish in the killer's face.

Charlie Kirk's killer does look more than a little like Charlie Kirk himself. Is it just that they're both young white guys? Or is there some strange underlying duality or doubleness? Something out of a story by Poe or Kafka or Nabokov (whose father was also assassinated), maybe?

"The Collector" is both timely and dated. Timely, because some people have the same cliches they had then. Dated, since intelligent people have long since seen through those cliches about class and sex and such.; 9/15/25, 9:33 PM
