Where are you reading that the suspect has been released? Perhaps you're confusing the old man who was initially arrested with the person that the FBI said was in custody. Those are two different people. The old man has been released, but not the actual suspect in the killing (so far as I and my network of observers know).

It was a 200 yard shot, planned on the eve of 9/11. At a moving target (seated, but moving). Wind. Single shot, silencer (so extremely well-equipped). Head shot BOOM, right in the cartoid artery. Pre-planned escape. Successful exfiltration in the presence of both hired security, but a light police presence.

Hitting the neck of a sitting, immobile person at 200 yards with a scoped rifle (probably) with one shot at a downward trajectory: 8-10
That rifle-scope was dialed in beforehand which takes some knowledge and some rifle range to shoot targets at 200m which isn't all that common - though it could have been done at 100m and that may be good enough for a high velocity cartridge. Knowing how to compensate for shooting down, more so.
It could be the killer was aiming for the head or chest and its just happenstance that he hit the neck.

I haven't heard any details on the caliber or number of shots taken. If it was one shot then I am guessing they chose a hunting/sniper rifle for the shot.

The skills to take the shot were not uncommon. Many reasonably intelligent and coordinated people with 30 minutes and the right guidance could make the shot if they were given the right gear. I could guide most of you how to lay prone with a rifle and sand bags and line up a shot at a 10 inch plate with a 6-10x scope on a hunting rifle at 200 meters.

The uncommon part is knowing how to position and how to set up support for the weapon. How to zero the weapon and the scope. How to scout the area and approach the target and take the shot then escape. Moving through a college campus with a hunting rifle then taking a shot and escaping implies a high level of skill.

I didn't watch the video but just from what I have heard I would guess a suppressor was involved as well. Most of the sound you hear when a suppressor is used is the crack of the bullet breaking the speed of sound and it can be difficult to know exactly where it came from which would help you escape.

With the awful Charlie Kirk assassination following so closely the Girl on the Train, I, a faithful catholic, am thinking about the death penalty. I consult from time to time a book of my father’s, Special Ethics by Joseph Sullivan SJ, from 1929, when the Jesuits were still held in great esteem. It covers a wide range of thorny societal issues. From his thesis on capital punishment: “civil society has the right of inflicting capital punishment if the taking of human life is not of itself intrinsically wrong…and if it is necessary to deter men from committing more atrocious crimes such as murder.
“The taking of of human life is not of itself instrinsically wrong, as God is the supreme master of human life and can grant permission to take human life under certain circumstances…the death penalty is a necessary means to deter men from more atrocious crimes and to preserve public order and peace. This is clear from experience which shows that there are men so depraved and wicked that they can be deterred from crime by the most potent punishment available.
“The only other remedy in the hands of the state is life imprisonment and this is not always effectual, because freedom may in the course of time be obtained by force or fraud…”
Anyhoo, don’t let folks accuse you of hypocrisy for supporting both the death penalty and a pro life position: both pertain to the protection of innocent life.
And another thing: Utah gov Spencer Cox has the right stuff. His remarks at the press conference tonight were direct, unscripted, heartfelt. I’m so used to pols reading remarks from a page. He’s the real deal.

The correct memorial to Charlie Kirk would be even more reasoned discourse. I'm quite sure he was shot to make us feel that talk is useless. And there are commenters here shrieking out slogans along those lines. But we can easily avoid still widespread violence still. If you merely said to college students that they might lose their cell phones at protests, attendance would drop by 95%. We won't have youth violence. I'm not being cynical; I just see that this is still all in people's minds and by that I mean, they picture themselves near something exciting and taking a picture of it and going home and showing off their picture. They aren't at all thinking of doing something that gets them hurt without a picture or that endangers their easy life or their future. And the symbol of that mindset is all those people taking pictures at flag burnings or building takeovers as compared to the small number actually doing anything. Yes, there are real serious Communists among us, ready to loot and burn but the number of the beasts with the torches is still miniscule compared to the number of the furries with their phones. And they would cwy for Mommy without them.

Sept 11 is now a reminder that Charlie Kirk was assassinated the day before.

AI : "An assassination is more than just a killing—it’s a targeted, deliberate act with specific characteristics that set it apart from other forms of homicide. Here's what typically constitutes an assassination:

🕵️‍♂️ Key Elements of Assassination
Targeted Killing: The victim is usually a prominent figure—such as a political leader, activist, journalist, or public official.

Motivation: The act is often driven by political, ideological, or religious motives. It’s not random or purely personal.

Premeditation: Assassinations are planned in advance, often involving surveillance, strategy, and sometimes hired perpetrators.

Public Impact: These killings tend to have broader consequences—sparking political unrest, war, or societal change. Think of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which triggered World War I.

Illegality: It’s considered a serious crime under most jurisdictions, often resulting in life imprisonment or the death penalty.

⚖️ Legal Perspective
In law, assassination is defined as the unlawful, deliberate killing of a prominent person, often without provocation and for hire or ideological reasons. It’s distinct from murder in that it usually involves a high-profile target and broader motives.

🧠 Fun Fact
The word “assassination” comes from the medieval Islamic sect Hashshashin, known for politically motivated killings. That’s where the term “assassin” originates"

Everyone needs to understand the history of the United States. This isn't the first time we had to sit down and admit to ourselves that we're going to have to kill a LOT of Americans, a LOT of Democrats, in order to secure the union.

Abraham Lincoln had this agonizing realization in 1861 when Democrats attacked Ft. Sumpter (a US naval base.) He realized that he was just going to have to kill a lot of Democrats to unify the nation we live in today.

They murdered him for it in the end. But he was right then.

So you all need to get comfortable with killing Democrats again. It's in our history. It's not unprecedented.

If the war were held today, with our population, it would take 4 million dead Democrats to end the war.

So get ready.

I have read that the shot was fired from the roof of a building.

If this is true then things become much more sinister.

Normally a sniper cannot take a position on a roof for a variety of reasons. It may not be hard to get roof access but that means you have to get off the roof when you exfiltrate. In this case the shooter either climbed down an external fire escape or went back down the stairs through a college campus building then ran off the campus with nobody seeing them.

I spent a fair amount of time in Kandahar on roof tops. It is not possible to use roofs unless you own the area and have freedom to maneuver. Even then "sneaking" on a roof is very hard. If one of the locals came out there is no place to hide on a roof. There was always confrontation.

I find it difficult to believe nobody saw him leave or that he was alone. I will wait for some details and witness statements to come out but it sure seems like it would be hard for someone to get on a roof on a college campus with nobody seeing them.

From Daily mail interview with trained sniper

"Ranstad, whose 6,778ft kill in Afghanistan set a record for the longest by an American in Afghanistan at the time, spoke to the Daily Mail about the shooting.
He said the amphitheater-like site was a 'buffet feast' for any shooter, pointing out how much easier it is to hit a target when shooting down from a roof.

He said: 'The security was super light, no crime at that school. So I guess the threat was low apparently.
'That's a buffet for someone who wanted to kill someone. It looked like a fishbowl, like an amphitheater, and high ground is money for shooters. Shooting down is easy.'
He continued: 'When you have events like that you look at the security, if you push 250, 300 yards, it's an easy shot.
'And not to mention out in the open, wind is low out in the country. It's not like in the city where a bullet flying past the buildings will move more.'
He added: 'Any bloke can go to the range three or four times and make that shot. I would start looking at range time if I was police.
'They should get all the videos, who's got what rifle and who isn't properly trained so don't know how to control their blood pressure and adrenaline.
'They're probably just an internet shooter, not a sniper or trained soldier.'

Ranstad said the fact that only one shot was fired and the suspect disappeared for a number of hours suggested he had a solid exit plan after the killing.
He said: 'He probably had an exfil plan. Normally it's crazy people who shoot 30 rounds. This was one shot, that was it.'
'In my opinion they had a plan. If you think about it, one shot, he's not caught...

Subsonic rounds are a thing. I use subsonic pistol rounds with 9mm and .45. The key there is that subsonic rounds start at ~900 feet per second. There is a right called the 300 blackout that specifically uses an upper-lower combination to use 556 casings with a 7.62 round. At the most basic level you just use a much heavier bullet with a measured amount of powder to achieve the desired muzzle velocity. You can sit on the range and use some tools to measure muzzle velocity if you make your own stuff or you can buy "subsonic" rounds easily enough.

But the problem is that taking a 200 meter shot with a subsonic round is actually very hard. I would have to set up for a couple days with practice and zeroing to make that happen. I heard 520 feet on the shot distance. at 900 feet per second you are talking over half a second of travel time.

Bullet drop is 9.8 m/s^2 which comes out to ~5.4 feet. That means you have to aim 5.4 feet higher than where you want the bullet to hit. Also with a half second of travel time wind becomes an issue. You have to know exactly what you are doing at that point.

If they used subsonic rounds the list of suspects gets pretty short.

buwaya said...

Gun control is not a useful tack to take here. This was easily possible with an entirely legal weapon, a hunting or target rifle not subject to control even in California.

Hassayamper said...

Not a gun guy but I've watched some 'gun guy' video and it's my understanding that a sub sonic round that is suppressed will basically fly thru the air silently and you only hear the 'woosh' as it goes by.

That was a 180-200 yard shot. It's unlikely that a subsonic round would be used for a shot like that. Almost all subsonic rounds are pistol calibers, and even a rifle-caliber subsonic round like the 300 Blackout would have an enormous drop of a yard or more at that distance. A telescopic sight could be adjusted to compensate for this by a skilled shooter, but I think it is more likely that they used a high powered supersonic rifle round like a .308 that would only deflect a few inches at that range.

A suppressor never achieves complete "Hollywood" silence, and when used for sniper engagements with supersonic rounds at distance, it is definitely still extremely loud, but the suppressor makes it harder to identify where the shot is coming from. It also reduces recoil to the shooter and helps obscure the muzzle blast and flash.

I asked Grok of we're in a state of war.

Grok:

"The targeted assassination of Charlie Kirk on September 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, is a stark example of political terrorism employing guerrilla warfare tactics. As a prominent conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, Kirk’s killing aligns with the characteristics of political terrorism—violence aimed at creating fear and influencing political outcomes—while incorporating guerrilla warfare’s hallmark strategies of surprise, mobility, and psychological impact."

Grok aligned this sort of terrorism with the murder of Abraham Lincoln and the coup against Richard Nixon executed by the FBI selectively leaking information to the Washington Post (the famous Deep Throat character, being of course Mark Felt, the Associate Director of the FBI.)

For example, after the Ryan tax cuts, 23 million jobs were created, yet some textbooks cite authors like Paul Krugman, who in his book "Conscience of a Liberal," promotes the idea that collective thinking and increased government dependency are positive. This kind of content is being taught in schools, which is why it’s important to be involved in school boards, communities, and youth initiatives like ours that encourage young people to participate. Recently, we hosted a debate at Illinois State University with around 250 to 300 students discussing fiscal responsibility and limited government. We plan to continue similar events at Loyola University, Iowa State University, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Our goal is to engage on college campuses and in classrooms to challenge ideas that threaten democracy, such as the acceptance of spending beyond means and reliance on big government. The national debt has doubled in seven years, from $7.5 trillion to $16 trillion, similar to the debt increase Britain experienced before taxing the American colonies. Despite this, current leadership seeks to raise taxes on wealth creators, echoing the actions of King George towards the colonies...'

CK was armed with the facts about History and the facts shaping public policy today, and he was persuading the young minds at their college campuses.
Now that CK has been assassinated, maybe, just maybe another potential CK might be intrigued just enough to do his or her own research and realize the lesson that repeats over and over, killing has never been the answer.

BTW: I would love to hear how killing your opponent is "the right side of History". Has anybody checked in on Inga?

A Democrat needs to step up and propose that we all - Democrats especially- out of a sense of unity as a country, need to wear black arm bands on the day of Charlie Kirk’s funeral. If Mamdani did this he would cinch the Democrat nomination for the Presidency and maybe the Presidency as well.

Oh fuck no.

Sorry Eva. It is a fundamental problem with democrats like Mamdani. Mamdani believes in violence. Mamdani has a core ideological foundation that the right people must force everyone to "share" their stuff "fairly."

Death and destruction will follow anyone like Mamdani who comes into power. He will jail and kill anyone who doesn't give him their stuff. That means people that vote against him.

These rifles are even legal in the UK.

Correct, and the British actually make some of the very best rifles of this sort. There's a UK company called Accuracy International that supplies military organizations all over the world with extraordinarily accurate, hugely expensive bolt action sniper rifles, often costing more than $10,000 each. You won't find them in your local gun shop, but if you've got that kind of cash, you can have one ordered for you and take possession of it in any state in the Union, as well as any country in Europe, with the right paperwork. A 200 yard engagement with one of those rifles is an easy chip shot after no more than a day of training.

Following some snide comments on X today, I feel I need to make the following observation:

If guns caused political violence, there would already be a lot of dead Communists in the streets.

These things don’t usually work long term. In Salem they executed some “witches,” and now the city is the witch capitol of the United States.

@Buwaya: No other Tech Founder holds even double digit shares and in the business since 90s. On top of that he is still CTO of Oracle. What an incredible achievement by Ellison.

In his own words: CK believed in the American way.

There are two Americas now. Both believe strongly that the other is evil and means them harm. Separate media environments has something to do with this but it’s not the exclusive cause. When you have to fight ideas with bullets, you’ve already lost the fight.

I'd like to remind everyone the words of Barack Obama, Nobel Peace Prize winner:

"Get in their faces."

"Punch back twice as hard."

"They bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun."

Those are the inspiring words that led to the events today. Democrats listen to their leaders. They act.

Good day for the Democrats. Very successful today. Charlie Kirk dead and the FBI can't find its own ass.

I’m playing the odds. There’s gotta be one smart ambitious Democrat out there. I bet a young Bill Clinton would have jumped at this opportunity.

I just realized that one of the 'journalists' who made asses of themselves over today's murder is named Katy Tur and is obviously a Democrat. So we can call her Katy Tur(D)!

Lem Vibe Bandit (8:31pm):
Another fun fact. 'Assassin' comes from 'Hashshashin', but I believe 'Hashshashin' comes from 'hashish', which they used to get into the mood for killin'.

The left's terrorist inspiring words: Repeated daily.

"Trump is an existential threat to democracy"
"Trump is Hitler"
"Trump is a fascist"
"Trump is a King"
"Trump's supporters are fascists"
"Trump is a Nazi"
Trump's supporters are Nazis"
"Trump is a dictator and he will end our democracy"

All of those words come out of elite democrats in positions of power. That rhetoric emboldens the violent leftist cultists to act.

Eva - John Fetterman.
But he might be next on the left's kill/hit-list.

"Katy Tur(D) "
I approve.

Oh, thanks for the additional tidbit Dr Weevil.

That’s why this opportunity is right there in front of a young (under 50) Democrat. Kyrsten Sinema would be a good candidate.
