"Jimmy Kimmel Returns: ABC Ends Suspension Starting Tuesday."

Variety reports.

Good! Glad to hear it. Un-martyr the man and put him back in the position that fits him, an ordinary host of a old-fashioned late-night show who might occasionally say something in slightly poor taste.

Go ABC ! Strap on that lead weight and jump back in. Good to see them commit so adamantly, now let's see them swim with that little ratings problem. And: Thanks for letting the FCC off the hook.

When they bring Kimmel back, and they will, because they all love him and hate you, you are going to have to completely cut this company out of your life finally: the parks, the movies, Marvel, ESPN, Hulu. Just thank it for the all the years of joy then say goodbye to it, forever. Otherwise, you are just paying Kimmel's salary yourself."

Is Disney's performative demonstration of its progressive liberal socialist democratic "principles" (ie TDS-Orange Man Bad hate speech) more important than its corporate profits and affiliated television stations??

"...The executives acted based on what was best for the company, this person said, and not on external factors. Indeed, it remains unclear if all ABC affiliates will air Kimmel’s program. Spokespersons for Nexstar and Sinclair could not be reached for immediate comment....."

Makes you wonder if they even called Nexstar and Sinclair. I bet they didn't. It's not as if they would be difficult to get in touch with - they are media corporations, the kind of companies that would have an executive-level public relations spokesperson, now wouldn't they?

Vance said...

I expect Kimmel to have huge ratings... for about a week. I also am 50/50 on whether he'll say something so stupid he will force his own cancellation again, like call for Erika Kirk to be murdered or something. Which, if he does, Kak and Inga will still defend to the hilt, no doubt.

Rick67 said...

Part of me wishes Kimmel's show would end because he's not funny, he spouts idiocy and contempt for Americans who don't share his views, his ratings suck, his show probably loses millions.

The other part of me is glad for his show to continue for the same reasons.

Peachy said...

Like Colbert's show - it's a financial loser.

Is this all a ratings stunt? ABC and its affiliates counting on viewers wanting to see what new controversy starts up tonight? Maybe they figure Kimmel with his new persecution credit will attract Colbert's audience?

Funny how they didn't reach out to the FCC or the Office of the President to see if they had any comment, since they are apparently the 'literal' cause of this massive crisis that has shaken the broadcasting industry to its very core.

Goldenpause said...

ABC/Disney will continue to lose money on Kimmel. The question is will Disney renew the show in May 2026 and extend the money losing streak.

Ronald J. Ward said...

Mason @ 3:47, that “cry fascism” jab is exactly why ABC reversed course. The longer Kimmel was off the air, the more it looked like political pressure was dictating who gets a platform and who doesn’t. That’s not a good look for a major broadcaster, especially after Trump’s lawsuits. By bringing him back, ABC flips the script: instead of being accused of bowing to intimidation, they now get to stand on the side of free expression. Meanwhile, Republicans are the ones on defense — scrambling to explain why a party that once branded itself as the guardian of the First Amendment is suddenly making excuses for silencing voices they don’t like.

So yes, ABC saw the writing on the wall — protect 1A credibility, get public support across the spectrum, and ride the ratings wave.

D.D. Driver said...

Even if Kimmel went back on the air: how would anyone know?

FullMoon said...

Obviously Trump contacted the decision makers at ABC and ordered them to reinstate Jimmy.

The people who run Disney are leftwing Democrats, not steely eyed business men interested in making as much $$ as possible. There are no "adults in the room" trying to be responsible, just rich leftists who want to prop up a Leftwing "comic" and churn out hate Trump propaganda.

And I guess we don't live in an "authoritarian dictatorship" where the FCC chairman tells ABC who it put on the air. So, I Guess goofballs like Ted Cruz and Rand Paul, who rushed out ot help Kimmel can rest easy.

RCOCEAN II said...

Look Disney doesn't give a shit about anyone calling them fascists or Commies. If Kimmel had attacked Israel or said something against Immigrants or any other issue dear to the hearts of Disney Execs, he'd be O-U-T forever. Byebye.

But he was suspended because of outside pressure. Disney execs had to pretend to care, just like Hollywood execs had to blacklist a few Communist actors in the 50s.

Rosanne was "suspended", she was fired. Because the Network execs didn't like her.

le Douanier said...

So this was an example of the government working to silence media for political benefit. In this situation the silencing lasted for a handful of days.

This situation was like that time when the Biden administration used the power of the government for political benefit. Biden pressured Twitter to lower amplification (not ban) the laptop from hell for a day. Except that DJT was POTUS, not Biden. At that time Biden was in a position as he was when he got business dough, he was not a part of the government. Sort of like when Homan took a bag filled with fifty grand. Unlike Biden and Homan, DJT is getting bags while in office. But the mega maga folks could not care less.

Got it.

RCOCEAN II said...

ABC/Disney will continue to lose money on Kimmel.

What percent of costs of the media mega-company that owns ABC is due to the Kimmel show. Unknown. Probably 1/1000 of total costs. But they don't need to care if they are losing money. Its too small.

Total Revenue for Disney for 2024 was $91,361 million. They lost $50 million on kimmel. That's .0005 of total revenue.

Chest Rockwell said...

"This blatant 1A violation "

How exactly?

RCOCEAN II said...

Its really pathetic how Rightwingers and Republicans think anyone who's rich or a businessman or Corporate Exec is their friend. They love the myth of the steely eyed profit driven corporate exec. Sure, he may vote Democrat but when the chips are down, the bottom line comes first. Except it doesn't.

Dude1394 said...

That's too bad. He's an ass****. But ABC/Disney can continue to lose money on him, it's their money.

Jaq said...

Democrats don't care if what he says doesn't comport to the facts, it was still "true." The truth to them is "whatever they think that people need to believe in order for them to get what they want"

Quaestor said...

But will the stations that banned him relent? There's much cheaper and more creative content out there begging for a shot.

Jaq said...

The bottom line does come first, but you have to think of it like Broadway accounting, maybe the profit comes from some decision made that seems totally divorced from the show. Look at how quick the Democrats assumed it was about regulatory approval. "Hey! That's our game!" they protest, and to be honest, one does wonder why a network would keep a money losing show on the air for so long. An honestly inquisitive person might wonder about that.

Naah! It's the Republicans and only the Republicans who do stuff like that!

dubbyhesspdx said...

The lesson learned is that you can go shoot up your local broadcaster and get your favorite showed returned to air.

Jaq said...

There is so much stuff on YouTube that leaves network TV and the news networks in the dust, it's pretty remarkable, really.

Dude1394 said...

Hopefully the SEC will suspend ABC's license. Do what they were being accused of doing.

So they're going to bring it back, despite losing up to $50 mil a year on that show.

Somehow, that's not really surprising. Guss they can write it off.

lonejustice said...

This is great news, even though I disagree with almost everything Jimmy Kimmel says. Conservative Republican and Trump supporter Sen. Ted Cruz admonished Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr for demanding ABC suspend Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show over comments regarding Charlie Kirk — calling Carr’s actions “dangerous as hell” and “right out of ‘Goodfellas.’”

“If the government gets in the business of saying, ‘We don’t like what you, the media, have said; we’re going to ban you from the airwaves if you don’t say what we like’ — that will end up bad for conservatives,” said the Texas Republican.

I sometimes wish that Ted Cruz was our President instead of Trump.

"Democrats don't care if what he says doesn't comport to the facts, it was still "true." The truth to them is "whatever they think that people need to believe in order for them to get what they want""

If you replace "Democrats" with "Religious Leaders," and rejigger the premise to a different context, do you think it's possible that some/many Religious Leaders do actually know that they are running a scam, like you say the Ds are up to flim flam?

Or, do religious leaders completely believe in something with exactly zero proof? Hence they tell us that believing in this thing with exactly zero proof is the guiding principle of their lives.

It is interesting that declaring unquestioned loyalty to the idea of the guy in the clouds with candy, and the guy in lava with torture is (mostly) a base requirement for seeking political power in the US. But according folks like Kirk we still need to increase the integration of religion--as long as it's the right religion--with government.

Carry on.

Even with the current Supreme Court ABC/Disney was foolish to fire Kimmel, but Brendan Carr, the FCC Chairman, was utterly moronic to openly gloat that it was pressure from him that got Kimmel fired -- as for Trump… sheesh. They turned Kimmel’s almost certain breach of contract case into a ‘slam-dunk’ First Amendment case by openly stating it was federal government pressure that caused the firing. I suspect that Kimmel‘s lawyers told ABC and the FCC that they would file the case Tuesday. I’m pretty sure the case would survive what’s called a motion to dismiss which would be filed 21 days later, so that within about a month the Trump administration will undergo an embarrassing loss.

Somewhere, away from all the media noise on this issue are a number of major Disney stockholders who stood up for America and told Iger to support Kimmel. Thank-you.

He has the most viewers, and he is extremely ugly.

Imagine how well he'd do if he wasn't disgusting to look at.

BTW, counting viewers is done for two reasons. 1) Folks are looking at the TV audience demos for calculating on TV advertising fees. But, 2) some people are looking at these TV audience demos for estimating how many people are absorbing the content.

If you are doing the latter you probably need to look at online views. John Oliver gets some number of views on HBO, but I just looked up his recent show and I see it has more than three million YouTube views in sixteen hours. Plus if you want to say that mega-maga-Greg is winning with young viewers, don't you need to add up all the numbers from the folks that are not mega maga? Don't forget that Leibowitz dude. Are we sure that Gross Greg's mega maga tiki torch is the leading light re TV comedy?

LLR-democratical Chuck probably put him up to claiming such a thing.

Kimmel is back! Kirk is still dead.

Good, now I don't have to stop not watching him.

Bob Boyd said...

Maybe, due to his poor choices of information sources, Kimmel sincerely believed Tyler Robinson was a MAGA guy. Maybe he'll come on Tuesday night and admit he was wrong about it.
Not likely, but that's what he should do.

"...Actually, he has 1.1 million viewers....."

Well......in September, yes - down 11% from the previous month, and down from about 1.7 - 1.8 million from a few months previous. That clarifies matters a little, doesn't it?

With all the pumping, I'm sure his numbers will pop in the short term, but I'm pretty confident his natural dickishness will reassert the trend after that.

"This might seem in slightly poor taste, but I do hope that Jimmy Kimmel is murdered violently and bleeds out in front of his wife and kids."

This is proof positive that Trump and his MAGA supporters really do want a civil war, and really do want to kill their political opponents. I don't know if any Homeland Security/CIA/FBI people read Althouse Blog, but if they do, I do hope that they are following people like Michael Fitzgerald, Achilles, and Drago.

You have to be dishonest. You are a liar. That is what you do.

I never post about what I want. I post about what is. I don't want a civil war. I have shit to do and I have a family to take care of.

The left will never stop trying to kill us. You will never stop trying to kill us.

We will either die or fight back. It is a binary choice for us.

ABC affiliates get shot up by a democrat for shutting down Kimmel.

ABC puts Kimmel back on the air.

Democrats cheer.

Of course they do.

So yes, ABC saw the writing on the wall — protect 1A credibility, get public support across the spectrum, and ride the ratings wave.

Over the last 10 years the average age of Kimmel's viewers increased by 8 years. From ~60 to ~68.

Hmmm...

You always have the dumbest things to post. You really are a stupid person.

I'm curious to see how hard he doubles down during his monologue tomorrow night.

BTW, a lot of the ABC affiliate stations have said that they're still going preempt the Kimmel show.

MadisonMan said...

Now he can continue to lose money for ABC and Disney. Everyone wins!

Vance said...

I fully expect Kimmel to come out and call for Erika Kirk to be killed, since "free speech and all!" and I fully expect Kak and Inga and lonejustice to say "I don't have any problem with that! The government needs to silence Gutfield though!"

Aggie said...

Whoops, looks like Sinclair Broadcasting Group is opting out of the Jimmy Kimmel magic. Will he break a million viewers next month?

Leland said...

I'm good with this. He received the appropriate punishment for his libel. The left lost their talking point. And Disney can deal with the fallout of pissing off both sides with a failing product. So much winning. It doesn't bring Kirk back, but it lives up to his ideals.

Who will fight to be a guest on Kimmel's grand return from exile, when the prospect of having almost 100,000 viewers nationwide beckons?

Gem Quincyite said...

Ann, you have more falsehoods in your statement, than a Jimmy Kimmel monolog.

One good thing, this kills the narrative that Trump was behind Kimmel getting fired.

Naah, nothing kills the "Trump is evil" narrative. It'll outlive the cockroaches.

Two weeks a month tops and he's out again. This is the apex of his career. He's done on late nite.

No, it was not "occasionally say(ing) something in slightly poor taste." It was a deliberate and malicious lie.

According to polls, about 50% of Democrats believe the killer was right wing or we don't know the killer's affliction with majority believing he was right wing. This allows them to avoid any indirect responsibility for Charlie Kirk's death. It allows them to take a stance of I'm-glad-he's-dead-but-my-side-is-clean. It absolves them from any responsibility to "lower the heat" in the discourse. It frees them from any needed introspection.

Kimmel was giving these people an "authority to cite" for their belief. Kimmel had two choices. He could blame a right winger or he could acknowledge everything that has been reported and blame a left wing fanatic. Even Bill Maher recognizes Kimmel was wrong but makes a joke about it.

If he chose to blame a right winger, he frees himself and his listeners from any repercussions. Sure you can say, "I'm glad he's dead" but it's not your fault. He chose that with vengeance and malicious intent.

If he choses to acknowledge that the shooter was a radicalized left winger, it leads him down a rabbit hole which he does not want to enter. Maybe his and the democrat rhetoric has been too much, maybe celebrating the death of an opponent is is a step too far, and as the meme goes "Are we the baddies?"

Reporting has it that not only did he chose the first (we saw it) but that he was going to double down on it. It was not an innocent slip, he was giving his side the go ahead to continue on their path and telling them he has their back. It needs to be treated that way. It is the most poisonous kind of rhetoric found in the current discourse.

"... slightly poor taste"? He always struck me as a lowlife who peaked as Ben Stein's sidekick.

Carson averaged 10-11 million viewers in 1969 and the US population was a lot smaller back then. It's a dying format. Kimmel will "move on" to something else before next year is over.

Last comment on this sickening post. Kimmel was never "martyred". Absolutely disgusting use of that word when in connection with a Democrat Party goon dancing on Charlie Kirk's grave.
