"It’s time this government told the police their job is to protect the public, not monitor social media for hurty words."

Said Kemi Badenoch, the Tory leader, quoted in "Comedian Graham Linehan arrested over trans tweets/The 57-year-old TV writer says he has been ordered not to use the social media platform X while he has been released on bail after being detained by armed police at Heathrow" (London Times).

"Hurty words" is a useful and musical phrase. Badenoch didn't coin it. I'm seeing, from back in March 2024 in the London Times, "Islamophobic tweets just ‘hurty words’, says mayoral candidate/Susan Hall, the Tory hoping to run London, was responding to claims about Sadiq Khan and Londonistan.'" Someone in the comments there writes: "Anyone using the infantile term 'hurty words' calls into question their suitability for high office." Is it infantile or is it a satirical way to accuse those who are complaining about hurtful speech of being big babies?

Also in the London Times, from last April, there's "Police make 30 arrests a day for offensive online messages/Civil liberties groups say that the authorities are over-policing the internet and threatening free speech using vague laws": Quoting Toby Young, the founder and director of the Free Speech Union: "Given that only 11 per cent of the violent and sexual offence cases in England and Wales were closed after a suspect was caught or charged in the year to June 2024, a steep decline on previous years, it seems extraordinary that the police are wasting so much time arresting people for hurty words."

The OED has not yet acknowledged "hurty" — other than as a word in heraldry:
1828 Hurty, charged with hurts, or semée of hurts, that is, strewed over with hurts. W. Berry, Encyclopaedia Heraldica Gloss.

I believe hurts are blue dots — azure roundels.

The only way to get leftists to respect Free speech is to do to them what they do to us.

Even then most of them will just resort to violence.

The core problem with "hate speech" laws is that the leftists are fundamentally anti-freedom and will always undermine free high trust societies.

If you actually want a free high trust society you cannot allow leftists the freedom to destroy the institutions that form the social contract.

The other thing we need to do to preserve freedom is to call a spade a spade.

Labor, Democrats, SPD, whatever Macron calls his party, The EU are all fascist entities. They have no intent to allow their opponents to exist. They will jail and persecute everyone who disagrees with them.

And because their core philosophy is that they must take the stuff from the people they rule and distribute it fairly means they will not stop until everyone disagrees with them.

I do have a problem with the "Hurty Words" phrase because it infantilizes what the left is doing.

The left in all of our countries are murderous violent thugs who use the government to steal our stuff and destroy the people who oppose them.

If you're a 12 year old, and try to defend yourself (and your sister) from rapists.. You'll go to jail..

If you're a woman, and you buy pepper spray.. PRISON

if you complain about ANY of this.. PRISON

Yeah, it is almost as if The Tories didn't have any power at all during the last 20 years.

The Tories have always been controlled opposition just like the Republican Party in the US.

Most of them are traitors too. Even now they are covering for labour pretending that labour is not a fascist violent repressive regime that has put far more people in jail for speech violations than Russia.

Russia may be a dictatorship, but at least Putin wouldn't protect Pakistani "migrants" who came in and raped their girls.

These are the things you cannot say. Russia's government is better than the British government right now. NATO is a dead alliance because we have nothing in common with the current rulers of Europe.

We should make it official and announce we are occupying Europe because if left to their own devices they have a pattern of trying to drag the rest of the world down with them like they are doing in Ukraine right now.

Ms. Badenoch was obviously mocking the government by using 'hurty' as she did. It is unbelievably stunning that the UK government, top to bottom, sat on their hands for two decades while literally thousands of their daughters were groomed and raped. And the best they can come up with is if you question it, you're Islamophobic and you must be silenced.
Hell...one would think it would take less to storm the Bastille.

The Brits were the first country to industrialize and so they are always the first to experience consequences and reactions to that change. They had the first industrial slums up in Birmingham; they were the economy that Marx studied to formulate his theories; they had the first nanny-state; they were the first to de-industrialize; they are now the first to cope with the social consequences of a detached elite in a welfare state running out of money because of de-industrialization. It's clear that wind power can't run industry or government and it's clear that the government is now just in it for the pickings and It's clear that only the people are an unknown. Now we wait to see what is cast up from the people.

It's blowback from empire. Where do you think all of that sumptuous wealth enjoyed for centuries by the British aristocracy came from? Of course the ones who benefited won't be the ones who suffer the consequences, no, it will be the descendants of the soldiers and sailors sent to fight for their prerogatives who suffer.

To the naked eye, you can't tell the difference between an Indian Hindu and an Indian Muslim. I don't think they're treated any differently by the general public so far as casual discrimination goes. Nonetheless, Hindus have a higher rate of income and education than the general public and Muslims less......There may be other factors at play, but religion is definitely a part of it.

Jaq said...

There is no true "left" to speak of anymore, they are co-opted. The Green Party in Germany is the biggest war mongering party in the country, it's the right that stands with the people, the left has been co-opted. Look at Inga, is she really a "lefty" when she prattles on here that we should be sending young men to their deaths in Ukraine, half a world away and none of our business? There is no more "left." The "lefty" influencers are all taking $8,000 a month to push the interests of neoliberal billionaires.

If you listen to honest to goodness lefties around the world, they are maybe not MAGA, but they clearly are rooting for Trump.

The Tory party was in power for 14 years. They put all these hate laws in place. The Labour party racheted it up a bit, but the Tories put the principle in place.

The Tories will talk about immigration and wokeness to win political support but when in power they just as bad as Labour.

It's time for the people of the UK to rise up against their government and remove them from office. Physically. With force.

A government jailing people for insulting a bunch of foreigners who don't belong in the country in the first place is a government that needs to be violently overthrown.

Jaq said...

Labor in the UK has hollowed out its army to the point where it can only bluff and bluster, over a war that doesn't concern Britain. There is no "left" anymore. The term is obsolete.

RCOCEAN II said...

People have been arrested for writing crap on the internet. The Tory leader should be outraged, not calling it "monitoring social media for hurty words". And she slides past the principle, the rights of people being violated and politically motivated arrests and jailings.

Instead, she poses it as an efficiency issue. The police should be doing other more important things. Just more evidence, the Tories are fakes who wont change a damn thing if elected.

RCOCEAN II said...

Offered in the spirit of philosophical consistency: FIRE is suing Marco Rubio and others over deportations and cancellation of visas for speech criticizing American foreign policy. If the complainants really did just engage in speech, then I think I have to reluctantly agree (in the spirit of defending to the death the right of someone to say things with which I disagree - I admit I hope I'm never tested on the "to the death" part) (and also in accordance with prior rulings about First Amendment rights applying to non-citizens - although since those rulings are pretty recent, who am I to say? Maybe another court might decide differently).

But where I think Rubio has every possible leg to stand on is in granting new visas: I don't see how anyone can discern a right for any person to come to this country legally on a visa just because that person wants to do so.

It was not their daughters being groomed and raped. It was the daughters of those bottom class oiks being groomed and raped. In the same way that Pritzger, Newsome and others don't care about murders of their bottom class oiks (blacks) the Brits don't care about theirs either.

That the optics of the Linehan arrest are very bad for Labour is proven by the statement from an official spokesman for Keir Starmer, who said: “The prime minister and the home secretary have been clear about where their priorities for crime and policing are, and that’s tackling anti-social behaviour, shoplifting, street crime, as well as reducing serious violent crimes like knife crime and violence against women.”

Meanwhile the Metropolitan Police commissioner Mark Rowley shines that his officers are in an “impossible position.” He has (necessarily) backed officers as the officers face criticism over the Linehan arrest, but has said the force should not be responsible for “policing toxic culture wars debates.”

My personal view, for what it’s worth, is that Linehan’s arrest blew up so fast, and so strongly against Starmer and his party, that that he has to distance himself from it, do he’s stuck blaming overzealous police officers. And I have no doubt whatsoever that the Metropolitan Police commissioner was 100% aligned with Starmer until he and his officers were left holding the bag, at which point it’s “Who? Us? Not our fault, just doing our job.”
