"It is a demand for control. Civility is wielded as a cudgel to further clarify the differences between 'us' and 'them.' It is the demand of people with thin skin who don’t want their delicate egos and impoverished ideas challenged. And it is a tool of fearful leaders, clinging to power with desperate, sweaty hands, thrilled at the ways they are forcing people, corporations and even other nations to bend to their will but terrified at what will happen when it all slips away.... I keep wondering when we will reach a cultural breaking point, when finally, the Trump administration will go far enough to shove us out of the comforts of our day-to-day lives.... The onus is on all of us to reject the fantasy of civility in favor of repair. This country is broken, but that need not be permanent."

That's funny that she seems so inciteful about "civility" but then gets the application to our daily lives 100% wrong.
Yeah, that's the problem with the left--they've been too civil.
Progressives pine for conception of a viable liberal license aborted.
Aren't the current calls for civility coming from the Left? WTF is she talking about??
Roxane in transition clings hopelessly to change of bitter days past. One step forward, three steps backward.
She obviously wants a violent overthrow of the government. She should be the change she wants to see.
Another deluded leftist who writes for the corrupt NYT(D)
Take a knee to the guillotine, deplorable demos, and your little babies, too, is a fetus... feature. #LoveTrumpsHate #HateLovesAbortion
I obscenity in the milk of your mother's civility, old one.
@Althouse, superficially it reads like your own attitude towards “civility bullshit.” The difference is that you apply he same attitude to left and right pretty even-handedly towards both sides. I’m morally certain that Ms. Gay will find reasons why it isn’t really bullshit when pushed on conservatives and even centerists.
thats pretty much all of them,
Tommy said:

they are.
The left just inspired a killer - and they know it.
Hillary Clinton was on MSNBC asking for civility.
yeah - Hillary - your team just inspired the murder of a nice young family man... who likes to talk to people.
I don't consider calling for the left to stop with the "Hitler", "fascists" invective to be civility bullshit. It's getting people killed. There are limits (or, at least, there should be).
The people who call for civility harbor the belief that we can contend with challenging ideas, and we can be open to changing our minds and we can be well mannered even in the face of significant differences. For such an atmosphere to exist, we would have to forget everything that makes us who we are. We would have to believe, despite so much evidence to the contrary, that the world is a fair and just place. And we would have to have nothing at stake.
In the fantasy of civility, if we are polite about our disagreements, we are practicing politics the right way. If we are polite when we express bigotry, we are performing respectability for people whom we do not actually respect and who, in return, do not respect us. The performance is the only thing that matters.
Is she telling the conservatives to stop being polite? Is she saying Charlie Kirk was doing it wrong-that he should have been holing protests at his rallies and smashing windows and burning down campus buildings?
I am confused. I thought the left was using the uncivil mode of political discourse and only call for civility when they want to shut down the people on the right. Oh, please help me understand.
She does however, make it abundantly clear about the difference between the two political factions: ...we are performing respectability for people whom we do not actually respect...
And that is where the problem lies. They do not respect the right, and it is that lack of respect that allows them to make fantasies about what we value. When you can "other" your opponent, you can do unspeakable things to them in the name of goodness. You would think her own history would caution her about "othering" your opponents.
Almost all human civilization can be summed up by the following phrase: "I’m better than you." Every great civilization on planet earth has a very clear and distinct definition for what it is about them that separates them from barbarians on the other side of the wall. Even the word 'barbarian' is Greek onomatopoeia for barbarian speech (ba-ba-ba).
It used to be that we believed such things at the meta-level, but it's now devolved into 'I must be better than you for reasons that remain murky and undescribed'. That is civility bullshit.
There are clear and distinct reasons for why the way we do things is better than the ways they would have us do them, and for why people who hate that concept to its core hate it for reasons that are murky and ill-conceived.
Dear Roxane,
We can stop being pathologically altruistic and suicidally empathetic towards you at any time.

’The onus is on all of us to reject the fantasy of civility in favor of repair.’
So much for turning down the temperature.
A response to Trump's speech published vicariously by NYeT. Russian collusion, obviously.
Maybe, but not killing people would be nice for a change.
Civility isn't all bad. It prevents people from pointing out that Roxane Gay is a fat lesbian of Haitian origin.
Everything with the Left is a weapon. They use civility as a weapon. Their only real consistent position is "Just win baby, just win". But dumb goober conservatives still want to hope and trust. Gosh darn it, if we're just reasonable and nice..
I enjoy Althouse using quoting to show her criticism. The begin sounds like a great description of Althouse's tag "civility bullshit", then the author writes: "I keep wondering when we will reach a cultural breaking point, when finally, the Trump administration will go far enough to shove us out of the comforts of our day-to-day lives" with I'm sure unintentional irony.
Civility BS runs both ways, Ms. Gay. I puke when the likes of Sen. Chris Murphy or others tell us conservatives tell us to "tone things down." You pricks started this by calling Trump a fascist and threat to democracy.
The constitution was written on a table by men sitting in chairs supported by the skulls of dead loyalists.
Every social contract is a enforced by violence and blood.
The first amendment only works when everyone abides by the contract. Google and Facebook and Twitter and YouTube have all admitted they worked with the Biden regime to censor regime opponents.
What happens now is that we hold the democrat party accountable for breaking the contract. Just as the British Loyalists had to be defeated to create the Constitution the democrat party must be defeated to uphold the constitution.
The Constitution cannot be used to protect people who do not believe in it.
Lazarus is right. Why worry about the Trump Administration going too far, when the left is shooting people in the street? The civility that Trump is wielding as a cudgel is a better alternative to war in the streets. Biden threatened war with F-15s as part of his demand for civility.
Calls for civility = "don't do to us what we just did to you."
The onus is on all of us to reject the fantasy of civility in favor of repair. This country is broken, but that need not be permanent."
I find your terms acceptable.

That photo of the writer says it all...
"I worry and I worry and I worry..."
An "idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing." How Shakespearian!
"Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow" refers to a famous soliloquy from William Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth... the speech is a nihilistic reflection on the meaninglessness of life, comparing it to a futile performance that ends in despair. The phrase uses repetition to emphasize the slow, tedious, and insignificant nature of time, culminating in the conclusion that life is an "idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."
Democrats, particularly black Democrats, choose to see everything in terms of oppressors and oppressed. It is an ignorant, counter productive way of life unless you are choosing to justify criminal behavior…. Oh. I see.
“Aren't the current calls for civility coming from the Left?”
No. Why did the right want to silence Kimmel for suggesting Kirk’s shooter was MAGA? All the crying and outrage coming from the right for even suggesting it was telling, as IF that was the worst thing Kimmel could possibly say.
"I keep wondering when we will reach a cultural breaking point, when finally, the Trump administration will go far enough to shove us out of the comforts of our day-to-day lives."
Good point. Someone might get themselves shot and killed.
Oh, wait. That apparently is *not* enough to go too far.
Oh for fuck's sake- when has the left ever been civil? When has the right ever not been castigated by the media world as racist bigots of low IQ?
Only one side is ever civil in this country and it ain't Roxane Gay's.

Now the left has empowered another shooting at an ICE facility killing at least one detainee riding in a van.
I’m not black, she’s not writing to communicate with me.
@Inga an FCC license is a public trust (the airwaves) and effectively a license to print money, and it comes with decency rules, and a requirement that the license holder is obligated to work in the public interest. Lying about the identity of the shooter, and placing him explicitly in the MAGA grouping was not in the public interest. It was a lie, designed to stoke emotions about an assassination in a particularly indecent way. He was called on this. His show was pulled by the network - or do you hold that the FCC was responsible? Please cite your sources.
Oh how the turn tables
"Why did the right want to silence Kimmel for suggesting Kirk’s shooter was MAGA?"
We called out his lie, Inga, the same way we called out yours about the exact same subject. Do you still maintain Robinson was MAGA, Inga, or do you now acknowledge you were wrong?
“The first amendment only works when everyone abides by the contract.

It’s evident that it’s Achilles is the one who doesn’t believe in the Constitution. He doesn’t understand that he can’t re-write it to suit his opinions.
…a White man in America…
I kind of agree with that excerpt?
Except the calls for moderation and restraint (and the actions of enforcing civility, i.e. J6 prosecutions, repression of "far right nationalist movements", etc.) have all come from liberal/leftist governments.
The "fantasy" is that the Left is still ascendent.
It is the Left who has been (and in Europe, still is "clinging to power with desperate, sweaty hands", making common cause with jihadists and communists who represent rejection of the Enlightenment.) It's why Boomers, who've called the shots for so long, are made the most crazed by the shift to classical liberalism and the revival of Christian ideals.
The right-of-center years ago realized the calls for civility and tolerance were bullshit suppression tactics. We've known since hurty words became violence, since memes and jokes became crimes.
What Roxane doesn't get is that we've been resisting the nice way. Electing Trump was the peaceful response to those clingers propping Biden up as their figurehead.
Escalation isn't in the best interests of the bitter boomers, or their avatars in power.
Just this morning it is highly likely a leftist shot and killed some illegal immigrants in Texas in an attempt to shoot ICE personnel.

When did I ever say Robinson was MAGA, I suggested he might be one of the Groyper weirdos. Nick Fuentes who is the leader of the Groypers is very anti-MAGA now. Go watch some of Fuentes videos from the last couple of months.
But who knows what Robinson’s political ideology really was? There were conflicting messages etched on those bullets, BTW.

There’s always a “but”, and an asshole is usually attached.
Shooting people is not very civil.
You see, Inga will lie relentlessly. It is her signature move.
Inag - Groypers and Fuentes have nothing to do with the leftist who killed Charlie Kirk. You read leftwing sources - and you have no credibility. Your lies span the decades. You are a stale, desperate delusional lie-buying jackass.
’But who knows what Robinson’s political ideology really was?’
No one on the right hated Kirk. The killer hated Kirk. Thousands on the left celebrated his murder. There were no conflicting messages on the casings. He was an unhinged leftist.

After Gabby Giffords was shot and wounded - the left ran out of the gate blaming Sarah Palin.
The shooter was a deranged lunatic obsessed with Gabby Giffords. The shooter had No connection or knowledge of Sarah Palin and ZERO evidence was ever found that the killer went to Sarah's web page.
That did not stop the left from building a lie, to smear Sarah Palin. The lie was: A symbol of a "target" on Sarah's web-page, and that symbol made the him do it. All unbelievable on its face - but an actual investigation found it to be a total fabrication.
Fabrications and lies are how the left move thru life.

The crying and outrage is coming from the right, because someone from the left shot and killed a person. The left obviously doesn't care, or cares only enough to blame and shame the victims.
“There were no conflicting messages on the casings.”
“In a style typical of today’s very online internet culture, some of Mr. Robinson’s coded messages were apparently not meant to signal his political intention, but were inside jokes meant for himself and his roommate.
“Remember how I was engraving bullets,” Mr. Robinson texted his roommate. The engravings, he said, “were mostly a big meme, if I see ‘notices bulge uwu’ on fox new I might have a stroke.””

Indeed Peachy. Comparing and contrasting the left's reaction and censorship after Gabby Giffords shooting is all anyone needs to show the hypocrisy.
Gabby survived. The Judge that didn't was consider on the right in local politics. The shooter only cared about Giffords and didn't even know Palin, much less followed her. Palin's campaign material was normal stuff put out by both sides.
But Democrats and particular Barack Obama held their own memorial event in Arizona (except again Giffords survived) and used it to blame Palin more so than a memorial to those that did die.
So civility is bullying? Newspeak much?

Regardless of Robinson's politics, it was Democrats who endorsed the murder, accessories after the fact.
“The crying and outrage is coming from the right, because someone from the left shot and killed a person.”
No it isn’t. The crying and outrage over Kimmel was him saying the shooter was MAGA. Yet it is acceptable to say the shooter was a leftist. There is no hard evidence to prove he was for sure a rightis or a leftist. YOU don’t know any more than anyone here what Robinson’s motives were other than him saying Kirk was hateful about trans people.
"Civility Bullshit." Thank you.
"And it is a tool of fearful leaders, clinging to power with desperate, sweaty hands, thrilled at the ways they are forcing people, corporations and even other nations to bend to their will but terrified at what will happen when it all slips away...."
Examples of those leaders in "fearful" and " terrified" condition, please. Some in-context pictures of those "desperate, sweaty hands"
The Tea Party was civil, the left and GOPe destroyed it. Trump is civil, they tried to bankrupt, imprison, and kill him. Charlie Kirk was extra civil with whip cream and sprinkles on top. The left celebrated his murder. And the right stayed civil. The reason why there are calls for violence from the left is not because the right is not civil, its because they are desperate.

There is no hard evidence
Kirk is dead and Robinson admitted killing him. Kirk's dead body, the round that killed him, the rifle the killer had; all of it is hard evidence. You are using terms you don't even know the meaning of.
Why are you even writing about a topic using words for which you don't understand the meaning? You do so while insisting that nobody else can understand something that you obviously do not understand. You keep doing this when others have told you to stop. It tells us what your motives may be.
"Civility bullshit" is a concise characterization that avoids semantic subtlety unfit to purpose.
The irony is Inga makes these claims in a post about civility bullshit, proving once again that demands for civility are bullshit.
Following a few links brought up the Althouse-Turley dust-up from 2012.
It wasn't civil.
But to the subject of the post - it depends on what the meaning of "civil" is.

Anti-ICE Terrorist Kills One, Shoots Two More in Sniper Attack on ICE Facility
FBI Director Kash Patel @FBIDirectorKash:
This morning just before 7am local time, an individual fired multiple rounds at a Dallas, Texas ICE facility, killing one, wounding several others, before taking his own life. FBI, DHS, ATF are on the ground with Dallas PD and state authorities.
While the investigation is ongoing, an initial review of the evidence shows an idealogical motive behind this attack (see photo below). One of the unspent shell casings recovered was engraved with the phrase "ANTI ICE." More updates will be forthcoming.
These despicable, politically motivated attacks against law enforcement are not a one-off. We are only miles from Prarieland, Texas where just two months ago an individual ambushed a separate ICE facility targeting their officers. It has to end and the FBI and our partners will lead these investigative efforts to see to it that those who target our law enforcement are pursued and brought to the fullest extent of justice."
Democrat Party are Radical anti ICE. But don't blame the Democrat party.
I'm in favor of reconciliation, or is that no longer a viable Choice... uh, choice?
When an administration consistently and openly lies, it erodes trust in all its information channels. This makes it nearly impossible to convey accurate information effectively, leading to increased chaos.

But how dare Charlie Kirk speak out!
And how dare Jews be allowed unharmed on campus!
Something no one seems to be asking on Twitter about the Dallas shooting. A guy with anti-ICE slogans on his bullets shoots three, killing one or two, none of whom are ICE agents, then shoots himself.
My question: Did he shoot himself in shame for shooting the wrong people? It looks like he was shooting at a crowd of detainees being loaded into vans by ICE agents (or unloaded from them - doesn't matter). Did he think his aim was good enough to kill the ICE agents, not the detainees right next to them? Did he have a fantasy of happy detainees running away, while the ICE agents bled out on the ground beside them? When he saw that none of the people lying wounded or dead were in ICE uniforms, did he realize that he'd totally screwed up? Was he planning to shoot a lot more bullets but quit in shame and shot himself? Apparently he still had unshot bullets with inscriptions after he killed himself, so it looks like he gave up early.

If we were as uncivil as you claim Inga, you wouldn't come here. You wouldn't be able to come here.
Inga's response to any facts that reflect badly on the left is basically the Chico Marx line, "Who you going to believe - me or your own eyes?" To her, anything bad about the left is false or, at most, neither knowable nor provable. This affords her the luxury of never having to revisit or question her belief in the inherent moral superiority of the left, which seems to be of utmost importance to her psyche. Sadly, there are many, many people out there who are similarly psychologically invested in the idea that dems are good and republicans are bad; and as they get older and older (and notice how it's the old folks who mainly turn out for leftwing demonstrations!), it becomes even more essential to their egos never to interrogate the validity of this construct. That's often because their WHOLE LIVES are based on their leftwing political identities. Hating the right is what they feel gives meaning to their lives. It's what connects them to their friends. And it's what connects them to their own past. And it's also why the party itself keeps moving further to the left. Influential voices on the left stake out more extreme positions, and committed followers like Inga have essentially no choice but to go along, lemminglike, to avoid the sense of ostracization and isolation that would follow from even thinking the words, "I dissent."
We are back to 0 days since the last progressive shot someone. 4 shootings in 2 weeks. That's not including the attempted bombings, arsons, and stabbings.
Tell it to the January 6’ers, Roxanne.
This is basically a might makes right argument.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent

Yesterday, @POTUS and I spoke extensively with President @JMilei and his senior team in New York. As President Trump has stated, we stand ready to do what is needed to support Argentina and the Argentine people.
Meanwhile, Argentina canceled soybean tariffs and sold its entire crop to China. Mr. Bessent has a personal reason for making this move. He owns $25 million of soybean-planted farmland in North Dakota, which theoretically will lose lots of money. But Bessent runs a hedge fund that he has not turned over to a trust, which will cover his bean losses while permitting the buyouts of North Dakota farmland for a song.

This is how the left always acts.
The shooter was a deranged lunatic obsessed with Gabby Giffords.
That kook started stalking Gabby Giffords when Sarah Palin was still mayor of Wasilla and essentially unknown even in Alaska.
The press went mad, denouncing Palin's map of Congressional seats she was hoping to flip, which used printer's co-registration marks that resembled crosshairs. This was shortly after the Democratic National Committee published a similar map using actual bullseye targets, and a Democrat candidate in California aired a TV ad showing his opponent's head in the crosshairs of what he claimed was a "surveillance scope".
Even by the standards of the leftist Democrat scum and the news media, if I may repeat myself, it was a disgusting display of bad faith and hypocrisy. Until Trump came along, there was no political figure in modern American history who had been so unjustifiably maligned as Mrs. Palin.
I am sorry to see that she has basically dropped out of politics. I'd happily vote for her again. She was one of the best governors Alaska ever had.
Grok is really helpful again:
Bullseye Map by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC)
During the 2010 election cycle, the DCCC published a map on its website featuring bullseye targets overlaid on Republican-held congressional districts it aimed to flip. This imagery was used to highlight strategic targets for Democratic gains, similar in style to the crosshairs map from Sarah Palin's SarahPAC that targeted Democratic districts (including Giffords').
The DCCC map was released on February 23, 2010, and clicking on the bullseyes revealed details about the targeted Republican incumbents and districts. It was part of broader campaign materials promoting "targeting strategy" efforts.
The original map can be viewed in archived form via discussions in contemporary analyses, such as this 2011 article from Outside the Beltway, which embeds the image.
TV Video Ad Depicting a Republican Candidate in Rifle Scope Crosshairs
In October 2006, Democratic congressional candidate Harry Mitchell (running in Arizona's 5th District) released a TV ad that explicitly placed his Republican opponent, incumbent J.D. Hayworth, in the crosshairs of a rifle scope. The ad used the imagery to symbolize Mitchell "taking aim" at Hayworth's record on issues like immigration and ethics scandals, with a voiceover stating, "It's time to put J.D. Hayworth in the crosshairs." The 30-second spot aired during the midterm election campaign and was produced by Mitchell's campaign team.
The ad is available on YouTube, uploaded in 2006, and was later referenced in post-Giffords discussions about bipartisan use of such rhetoric (e.g., in The Atlantic's 2011 analysis of Palin's map). Mitchell won the seat that year.
