"It’s a weird, decades-long fixation for a president who wanted a White House ballroom years before he became president..."

"... although he hosted just two state dinners during his first term. But majestic spaces are where the political and social elite — kings, aristocrats, tycoons — have traditionally asserted and cemented their power. 'It was a place where these structures of society were reiterated and brought into being, ... a kind of social, political, dynastic space of performance,' said Robert Wellington, author of the forthcoming book 'Versailles Mirrored: The Power of Luxury from Louis XIV to Donald Trump.' The modern ballroom — the one most of the American bourgeoisie have come into contact with — is a staid, multimodal, commercial space: a cavernous hotel room with collapsible wall panels in aggressively beige tones, a perfectly adequate place for hosting weddings, charity dinners and professional conferences. Ask anyone to describe a 'ballroom,' though, and most will conjure something from HBO’s 'The Gilded Age'...."

From "Trump loves a swanky ballroom. So did the Gilded Age elite. The president’s vision for a palatial addition to 'the People’s House' showcases the historical ties between architecture and power" (WaPo).

That's a free-access link, because there's much more about the history of ballrooms, with plenty of interesting photographs, interspersed with the anti-Trumpism you've got to expect.

But it could be way more anti-Trump than it is. I know when I hear the theme "architecture and power," I think of the Nazis, but there's no mention of Nazi architecture in this article. Why not? The easiest answer is that Trump's aesthetic is not like the Nazis'. It's gold leaf and chandeliers. French. The Nazis wanted "an impression of simplicity, uniformity, monumentality, solidity and eternity." Ironically, it's the absence of that sort of thing in Trump's ballroom that seems to be bothering The Washington Post.

It's necessary to have ample room for Trumps huge balls.

The state dinner has historically been the ceremony to cement bonds with foreign allies…or adversaries. For reasons delegations are larger, support is larger and thus we long outgrew existing spaces. The tent thing is tacky, a symbol of American dysfunction. One place I don’t mind an upgrade…

After "Trump loves a swanky ballroom. So did..." my eye seriously expected to see Hitler.

I think you meant to write "Trump's aesthetic is not like the Nazis'."

You mean "Trump's aesthetics are NOT like the Nazis"?

The one thing that nobody seems to complain about, is Trump's dedication to the job. He's on duty and accessible to an extraordinary extent. And a lot is getting done. His detractors shout and carry on about the outrageousness (their word) of what he is doing, but never that he's doing too much of it, or not enough - because that would be unsafe ground. He's the Energizer Bunny.

Given the sheer amount of what he is accomplishing begs the question - how come other Presidents don't get nearly as much done? What were they so busy with? Or, why were they not so busy? Trump seems to be pacing Teddy on his sheer exuberance and energy for the office and its Bully Pulpit - except that Teddy was only 51 when he left office after his second term, and he was dead at 60.

Another way for Trump to put $ in his pocket. Donors in the most transparent administration in history are anonymous. I’m sure none of them are expecting anything in return.

Sorry, I originally accidentally left out the word "not" in "The easiest answer is that Trump's aesthetic is not like the Nazis'."

Hopefully that was obvious! Do not like to confuse.

Building a Golden Ballroom to entertain foreign interests and power brokers is a very weird thing for a Swamp Drainer to fixate on. I'm beginning to question his sincerity....

Timely! Mrs. MJB and I were talking about the big beautiful ballroom this morning. The USA deserves he best facilities for our President and State Guests to enjoy a large gathering without putting up a circus tent. It is ridiculous they've been putting up a tent 100 yards away, that forces guests to walk across the lawn to get to the event. No wonder Joe had few events.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Yeah Trump has had that "weird fixation" of wanting to upgrade America's image and stature in the world. Go figure! He has literally been saying these things for 30 years, yet leftists are amazingly equipped to be "surprised" at the most mundane and idiotic things. Just because all the democrat voters live in tents on the streets doesn't mean our foreign guest should dine in a tent to show solidarnosk with them. How tacky. Ew.

Cleaning up democratic-run city shit-holes like DC - and building impressive spaces - is fine by me.

Democrats only care about authoritarian rule and stealing power for themselves and their corrupt cronies and loyalists.

The democrats stand shoulder to shoulder with drug transients, crazies, mentally ill, criminals and thugs.

Neo-classical aesthetic is far superior to the left's brutalist approach.

Thanks for the link. The Billionaires of today seem to like luxury 100 million yachts and trips to outer space over ballrooms.

WaPo - the snarky teenage girl. Trump is so "Weird". What a joke newspaper. Trump is building a ballroom with private funds and it will be there for future Presidents to use. But who cares about that! This is a chance to snark at Trump and lie about how he's "authoritarian" and "Just like Louis IV and the Robber Barons".

Again leftwing and MSM hypocrisy is constant and consistent. Its a strategy. Biden's staying at Billionaire's homes - nothing wrong with that. Lavish displays by Billionaires who vote Democrat - nothing wrong with that. But Republicans? Well, that's different.

BTW, why should I like or dislike a style or art form because the Nazis did? I consider viewing things as bad because "Hitler liked it" to be moronic. But yeah, there's nothing grandiose about Trump. He just likes things to be "classy" and "impressive".

DC and other democratic run American cities are a crime-ridden drugged up disgrace.

White leftists who live in luxury - DO NOT CARE.

And Hitler loved ballrooms, unlike Churchill. "Let me tell you this! And you're hearing this straight from the horse. Hitler was better looking than Churchill. He was a better dresser than Churchill. He had more hair! He told funnier jokes! And he could dance the pants off of Churchill!"

LOL you don't even realize he DONATED $200 million for the ballroom renovation and the REST is privately financed with donations. You guys try so hard but he just isn't the snidely whiplash you dreamed about. Must be sad to be an ignorant leftist nowadays, unaware of so very much but certain of everything. LOL

Speaking of ignorant leftists...

Maybe because he was ashamed of the tent that had to be used.

I'm surprised Donald wasn't castigated for abandoning his own Nazi culture and appropriating French couture.

He has not donated shit. The entire ballroom is supposed to cost $200 million. I don't have a problem with private donors, but each and every donation should be public with full disclosure of all donors.

Too risky with Joe. In so many ways.

A donation is an investment of resources toward a goal.

When I think of ballrooms I conjur up Natasha and Andrei dancing in War and Peace, and especially the filmed Soviet adaptation that won Best Foreign Film Oscar in late 1960s.

You know what, almost every country has a US Embassy that is supposed to represent the diplomatic weight of the United States. I have been in the French one, it is at the at the heart of Place de la Concorde, one of the best addresses in the 8th arrondissement. It has a ball room and they buy Champaign by the ton. So Trump sucks because he wants the head shed to look like the local hangout? My god, what bunch of insanity.

Marcus Bressler said...

Hey, Mike (MJ..): If Trump does not name it after himself, I see no reason for JD not to when he takes over the presidency

The collective left: No! whaaaaaaa.

They could name it after Michelle Obama, a name some associate with balls.

The WH got tired of renting the Knights of Columbus Hall for state dinners.
