Over 90 people died in the Texas floods, including dozens of children. Before the bodies were even cold, Democrats all blamed Trump and the Republicans, and Trump and his Republican supporters all blamed Biden and the Democrats. This is the sorry state we are in today. I say fuck all of you.
There's specularly bad floods in China, whole cities underwater with floating cars dashing by, that's also Trump's fault. See youtube.
“Trump and his Republican supporters all blamed Biden and the Democrats.”
Have any specific examples?
and Trump and his Republican supporters all blamed Biden and the Democrats.
Provide a link of Trump saying any such thing, or shut the fuck up.
Beautiful photos. All keepers.
Some of you may recall that I commented here about how movie/TV productions do a crap job of obtaining new paintings in old styles: say, for example, when a period show needs a period-style painting of one of the characters.
The latest installment in my art-rage tour is last night's episode of The Gilded Age. A rich girl (fictional) has been getting her portrait painted by John Singer Sargent throughout the season. Last night, her family hosted an unveiling for their fellow robber barons.
The showrunners must know a lot of people like me, because the camera never dwelt on the painting. As the hosts of the official podcast stated, you had to pause the show to get a good look at the picture. The thing had none of Sargent's impressionist-like fuzziness (sorry for the technical art-historical jargon), and the face just looked like it was painted straight from a photo of the actress.
So I still am not impressed.
I thought AI might help. I asked MS Copilot to paint Althouse in the style of Sargent. It got the fuzziness, but really riffed on the Prof's face, making her unrecognizable to my eye. But at least it doesn't look like someone just copied her photo.
Here are links to the source photo I asked it to start with, and its final product:

Guess there is still progress to be made.

Nice pics.
Turns out it's not very smart to build a girl's summer camp literally in the riverbed of a Texas arroyo that routinely floods (in fact, did so in the 80s killing 10 girls.)
The Mystic Girls Camp was built within the riverbanks of the river. These arroyos are well-known and everybody in Texas knows not to pitch camp inside the banks of a river.
Heads should roll in Kerr County.
FLC, are you this unpleasant in your real life?
No. Only on the internet. Fuck did I do except warn people not to put 10-year-old girls lives in danger by building shit inside the riverbanks of an often-raging river.
Fuck all the way off.
“Trump and his Republican supporters all blamed Biden and the Democrats“
I haven’t heard that at all. The problem we have in politics is people can’t tell the truth.
FLC … How many F- bombs did you put in your legal briefs?
Fuck did I do except warn people not to put 10-year-old girls lives in danger by building shit inside the riverbanks of an often-raging river.
You didn't do that, or at least you've provided no evidence that you "warned" anyone.
This flood has devasted so many families. I would like to leave it at that, at least until the bodies of children stop being found. The best I can hope for from this disaster is that important things will change.
There’s a plague of mental illness that is being spread and demonstrated by the media and, it appears, by some people commenting here.
The warnings all went out early in the morning - like 4 AM - most people were sleeping.
The hippos are making a mess of the pool again.
@Jamie
FLC is being truthful. Here's what he said about 26 hours ago:
"These girls camps aren't even on flood plains. They're built right in the historic channel of the river. Like right next to the river at it's very, very lowest, but inside the banks that the river has carved out over time, through repeated flood events."
"Nothing should be built in this area, much less a camp for kids."
That's a forthright condemnation of those camps and the Kerr County officials who permitted their construction.
@john mosby
LOL
@john mosby
What prompt did you use besides "Ann Althouse"? Bess Truman?
That's a forthright condemnation of those camps and the Kerr County officials who permitted their construction.
It is a condemnation - in which I share. It's not a warning.
This flood has devasted so many families. I would like to leave it at that."
Then do that. I would like to warn FUTURE parents not to put their kids into this riverbed that frequently floods and kills children. It's patently unsafe, and anybody simply looking at a Google Earth view of this river can see how WILDLY UNSAFE these camps are. They shouldn't exist. Those remaining should be torn down and their license to operate businesses revoked. They are unsafe.
You can offering thoughts and prayers if you want. I would rather speak to our future. This is how mankind advances.
Thoughts and prayers don't save lives.
True, though I can't see a motivation to lie here. Consequently, I think we shouldn't be so argumentative. Just like New Orleans and Katrina, warnings were given from many quarters and ignored by the authorities most closely connected to the problem. Nevertheless there are powerful people who to this day blame George Bush and absolve Ray Negin.
My point is that I'm sure there were people giving actual warnings about the placement of these camps. I had never even heard of them until this weekend, though, and I only live a couple of hours away. So I wasn't warning anyone about this decision. And I doubt very much that FLC was vocal in his objections to the location of this camp, prior to this weekend. There is a difference between screaming unheeded warnings into the void (which, as I said, I'm sure some were doing, in the past when it would have made a difference) and condemning terrible decisions after the fact, while appearing to claim moral high ground for doing so. Everyone now condemns the decisions that led to small children sleeping in a freaking river channel.
Friends of ours have their young daughter on a list for next summer (I'm guessing they've changed their minds, unless the camp of their choice changes its cabin locations). They've been fighting the shakes all weekend over the fact that their daughter was a year too young this summer.
And we just found out that another friend lost two dear friends as their house was swept away..
This is not a good time for what appear to be I-told-you-sos, especially when you didn't. Heads should roll and they will, I trust, but first the dead must be recovered, and identified, and laid to rest.
FLC, you've been getting right up my nose on a number of subjects lately, but this subject is different: I just don't want to let lie anyone's claim to have foreseen this horror unless she actually did, and spoke up about it back when it could have changed the outcome. If you did indeed speak about this in advance of this weekend, I apologize and withdraw every reference to you that I've made.
The more time I spend on X, the less I think of humanity. It is indispensable in many ways, but also intolerable.
We crossed in the ether. I'll absolutely grant that you're warning now, just like everyone else. If those camps are rebuilt where and as they were, it will be - I don't know if it'll be legally a criminal offense, but it'll be criminal nonetheless.
More of the trump Criminal Organization info outed and held for months and telling Judges different. Salvador kneecapped Trump's claim over deported migrants: 'Not been honest' That's Hilarious ,not been honest the biggest LIAR in American History not being honest, C'mon man
President Donald Trump's administration controls the fate of migrants it has deported to other countries like El Salvador, officials claimed in a court filing on Monday.
The claims contradict the Trump administration's position that it has no authority to return the migrants once they've been sent elsewhere. That was the argument they used to try and circumvent a court order to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from El Salvador's infamous CECOT prison to the United States.
Salvadoran officials pushed back on those claims in a new court filing, saying that "the jurisdiction and legal responsibility for these persons lie exclusively with the competent foreign authorities, by virtue of international agreements signed and in accordance with the principles of sovereignty and international cooperation in criminal matters."
Said another way: The Trump administration "is in charge" of the migrants even after they cross U.S. borders, a lawyer with the American Civil Liberties Union, told The Washington Post.
Trump has deported immigrants under the Alien Enemies Act, a centuries-old law that allows the president to immediately deport people during wartime. In past media appearances, Trump has described illegal immigration in the United States as an invasion, although he has not officially filed a declaration of war against any country.
The Supreme Court has also said that the Trump administration needs to allow immigrants who are being deported sufficient time to challenge the claims made against them.
The documents filed with the court today show that the administration has not been honest with the court or the American people,” Now who would have ever thought that Right. Criminal enterprise duping em all as the trumpeters follow the bouncing ball.. Very sad,, NOEM,MILLER,TOM(the alky) being dishonest> Cmon man...
"Friends of ours have their young daughter on a list for next summer"
For God's sake man. STOP THEM. What the fuck? Are people really this stupid?
Mosby made me do it:
https://copilot.microsoft.com/shares/RsDXbZuEX7yiuySXPQcQU
Also, I was thinking how Democrats are very big on criticizing the USA and exposing all the flaws and terrible mistakes this country has made, as if that is their moral duty, but they never apply that moral doctrine to the Democratic Party, only to the Republicans.
For God's sake man. STOP THEM.
Their children call me Abua - short for Abuela. There is no way they'll attend any camp in a river bed. I only learned that they'd had the older one on the list yesterday.
I do apologize for my tone, FLC and anyone else; rough couple of weeks around here and this disaster is hitting way too close to home.
Maybe there are songs that have a twin.
"Master Blaster (Jammin')" is a 1980 song by American singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder, released as the lead single from his nineteenth studio album, Hotter than July (1980). It was a major hit, spending seven weeks at number one on the US Billboard R&B singles chart, reaching number five on Billboard's pop singles chart in the fall of 1980
"Spirits in the Material World" is a song by the British rock trio The Police, written by Sting. The opening track for their 1981 album Ghost in the Machine, it was released as a single in 1981 and reached No. 12 in the United Kingdom and No. 11 in the US in early 1982.
What if I told you Bob Dylan himself birthed a twin song.
No worries Jamie. But definitely get your friends to reconsider. Mystic wasn't the ONLY camp that's situated directly in the riverbed of the Guadalupe. There are many others.
If Bondi said she had the client list of Epstein on her desk and now all of a sudden(since Musk said trump was in it) its closed there was no list ,then why in Hell in Ghislaine Maxwell. DOING 20 YEARS IN THE JOINT? No clients ,no crime...c'mon man not everyone is a non thinking MAGA.. :(
Oh. Twin songs are not identical twins.
I often walk on a path a couple of feet above the creek in City Park. There's a six foot chain link fence between it and an apartment complex up a slope from it. They built up the other side for playing fields. Today, the entire length of fence had dead leaves stuck in every link, all the way up. It looked like the water got up to the cross street at the path's end, normally about 15 feet above the water. We had a lot of rain in NC Saturday and Sunday.
More covid shot news. Not good news for those who've had the shots. Seems multiple shots mean you die faster if you get various forms of cancer. And with other news coming out- it seems you die faster, period. Everyone is going to die eventually. Most of us try to put it off as long as possible.

Dinky - I share your questions.
@Gospace:
I gave Grok the link to the actual study.
Grok’s conclusion:
“• Retrospective Design: The study is retrospective, meaning it looks back at existing data, which can introduce biases, such as selection bias in the 96 patients chosen for IgG4 measurement.
• Small Sample Size: Only 96 patients were analyzed for IgG4, and 16 for spike-specific IgG4 in pancreatic cancer, limiting the statistical power and generalizability.
• Confounding Factors: The study did not account for subsequent vaccinations, history of COVID-19 infection, or other factors like patient comorbidities or specific treatments, which could influence outcomes.
• Single-Center Study: Conducted at one hospital in Japan, the results may not apply broadly due to differences in patient populations, healthcare practices, or vaccination protocols.
• Discrepancies in Analysis: There were inconsistencies between statistical tests (e.g., log-rank vs. Gehan-Breslow-Wilcoxon) regarding IgG4’s impact, highlighting the need for further research.
The study is specific to pancreatic cancer and does not make claims about other cancer types.”
I’m not saying the study is invalid only that it doesn’t show definitive proof nor does it claim to. We’ve seen that so many of these studies have a lot of issues and it doesn’t make sense to trust studies whose findings we support over studies that don’t have findings we support. We need to be skeptical of all studies.
I got all 3 shots. Knowing what I know now, would I do it again? Probably not. I did not get Covid (knock on wood) even though I was exposed to several people who had Covid. A few of them multiple times. (They all tested positive so I’m not relying just on symptoms.) And my job exposed me to a lot of people daily for the duration of the Covid year. I rarely wore a mask, never at work.
The reason I got the shots was because I didn’t want my life to be a living hell if I had to be hospitalized, God forbid, if I did come down with a bad case of it. I knew 2 people who didn’t get the shots who were admitted and the staff treated them abominably. I also knew 1 person who did get the shots, was hospitalized and died (by the way she died alone because those fucking doctors wouldn’t let her husband at her bedside.)
Suggest one avoids reading the NYT's coverage of the Kerrville disaster. Nowhere in the 'live-update' reporting stream is there a complimentary mention of the dedication/selflessness/volunteerism/faith outreach within the community and the responders. But hey, there's these tidbits:
..."flood-warning sirens along the Guadalupe River might have saved lives, and need to be in place by next summer. Kerr County officials had considered installing them but balked at the price tag......"...."Texas has a growing backlog of flood management projects, totaling some $54 billion, but state lawmakers have allocated only a fraction of the funds needed while cutting property taxes by $51 billion this year....."
And of course the usual section devoted to TDS: 'claimed without evidence...false assertions'. One cannot sufficiently hate these reptiles.....
"I gave Grok the link to the actual study.
Grok’s conclusion: ..."
What did your Magic 8-Ball (TM) say?
Wait -- don't tell me. Keep it to yourself.
If you don’t want to read a comment, scroll past it. So easy.
@john mosby, IMHO Sargent was exceptional at capturing a woman’s intelligence with her pose and eyes and facial expression. Look again at “Lady Agnew of Lochnaw.” Sargent would have found a way to capture Althouse’s intelligence.
Trump and his Republican supporters all blamed Biden and the Democrats.
Link :
Trump did finally acknowledge the flood, 3 days later, in a 34-second Truth Social post, where he said Texas was “resilient” and blamed the disaster on “Biden regulations.” He also coldly stated, “It looks like some young people have died” on his way to his NJ Golf Course.
Well I currently have some strain of COVID, according to the urgent care doctor who said I tested positive for COVID and who felt constrained by my vitals to send me onward to the Winchester Medical Center ER. I had the jab (Johnson & Johnson) when it first came out, and while I never had the original strain of COVID-19, I did catch Omicron (I’ve had worse head colds) and then there’s whatever strain this is. If gestation is 5-6 days then wire and I picked it up on a vacation cruise in and out of the Norwegian fjords, if gestation is as short as 2 days then time to blame changing planes in Frankfurt.
Either way this one hits hard. I passed out fully dressed (inc. shoes) on my bed in lieu of supper, and I slept through breakfast and lunch. I was dehydrated, so presented with a-fib to go with other already existing heart issues, and had very little energy. I never had much in the way of fever — one reading of 100 point something in urgent care — but no strength in my body.
I should be okay soon. This damned virus wrecked a combined “welcome home” and Fourth of July party with one set of grandkids and Grampop’s 79th birthday with the other son’s family.
PS: I suspect the ER doctor would have kept me for observation for a day except I had no fever and that day would have been July Fourth.
Once again, Mr. True Conservative makes a baseless claim against Trump and his supporters ... and then tells us to go fornicate ourselves in the process.
Upon being asked for proof - by not just me, but others - the cat's got his tongue.
Multiple choice:
A. Not engaging in good faith;
B. Dishonest;
C. A 20-year, 'Republican' consultant who unwittingly turned Iowa red at the precise time he got fired; or
D. All of the above.
Get better, Big Mike.
My kid brother is Mike. And he's bigger. :)
Trump did finally acknowledge the flood, 3 days later..
The flood hit on Saturday, July 5th. Two days ago.
Why do you have to lie? Why do you use sources who also lie?
Trump issued a disaster declaration for Kerr county on Sunday July 6th.

Ghislain Maxwell is the first madam in history to be convicted for sex trafficking without any Johns. IF there is no evidence about Epstein, how can there be about Maxwell?? Free Ghislaine!!
I wanted to read the actual Justice department memo on this Epstein stuff before commenting: https://www.justice.gov/opa/media/1407001/dl?inline
Yeah, that’s a big swing and miss by people who made it a bigger deal than it needed to be. We knew Epstein harmed people. We’ve heard from a couple victims. What we want to know is who did he traffic these victims to. Complex motives isn’t as important as the fact they were underage and forced into activities against their will. As for suicide or not, he was in protective custody and under suicide watch. That he succeeded doesn’t answer the question of how was he successful in doing so when you had a policy in place to prevent his success. That last sentence applies to everything about Epstein.
I think Epstein is a big deal. I just don’t think he is a thing that should be left or right, it simply is wrong. If you are going to make it political rather than a simple case of lawlessness, then you better bring the goods. Otherwise, shut up, because you aren’t doing your job of obtaining justice for those victims. Which makes you the political problem.
Trump to Resume Sending Weapons to Ukraine ~ WSJ
The U.S. will send additional defensive arms because Moscow is hitting Kyiv ‘very hard,’ the president says
Trump may have worked it out..
Happy TACO Tuesday everyone! 🌮
Living in NC now, and near the coast, we have regional sirens for weather and nuclear plant emergencies. We also receive blaring warnings from our own phones when tornadoes are in the area. We’ve received such blares in the middle of the night, and have been woken up by them. I imagine campers may not be allowed to have phones for obvious reasons, but the tech can be had fairly cheaply in any and all camp and other buildings - starlink, receivers. Regional blaring sirens still required, but they should not be the only way to be informed.
That's smart for meade to go first to secure the area, I guess. Pick up any sticks in your path, etc. Does he take a separate car over or do you drive together for your daily jog?
Darn. I have the wrong Stevie Wonder song 👆🏽@9:27 pm
I’ll fix that later tonight, at the next sunrise.
To flesh out the flood a little and Mystic Camp in particular. It has been there a very long time. Since Lady Bird was a girl.
As I said before. This was a once in a hundred years flood. The camp had been there so long that people forgot it was part of the flood plain.
But before we start pointing fingers let's get everybody home first.
