"The women’s hair is in Utah curls, long waves with straight ends, popularized by Mormon momfluencers. Their makeup is heavy..."

"... the content creator and comedian Suzanne Lambert called it 'Republican makeup,' which she explained to me is 'matte and flat': thick eyebrows and lashes, dark eyeliner on the top and bottom lids, a bold lip, lots of bronzer. 'Inappropriate unless you’re on a pageant stage. And in that case, I would still do it differently,' she said. Their clothes, whether casual or corporate, are form-fitting and often accessorized with giant crosses. They are always thin and almost always white. To each her own. But it is also undeniable that this hyperfeminine and overtly Christian look offers a stark contrast to the often blunt and even brutal language they employ. Another glaring example of this is the horrifying video of Kristi Noem, the homeland security secretary, at CECOT, the tropical gulag in El Salvador where the Trump administration has sent migrants. She stood there before a group of shirtless prisoners and declared, 'If you come to our country illegally, this is one of the consequences you could face,' while wearing a $50,000 Rolex.'"

Writes Jessica Grose, in "MAGA Beauty Is Built to Go Viral" (NYT).

I think it's a great strategy for the Democrats to go after Republican women for how they look and dress while ridiculing their religion and motherhood.

I guess the DNCers think being completely tone deaf has worked so well so far in the Trump era that they need to triple down on it.

That was pretty horrifying. You could see the gang tats on all of those guys. I'm glad they are in El Salvador in prison and not here in America menacing properly turned-out non-Christian women.

In addition to the makeup, I notice the tendency of MAGA women to position themselves on the other side of the bars from the tattooed, lowlife thugs, instead of getting themselves inked too, and shacking up or conducting interviews. I'd call them 'human interest' stories, but that would be kind.

And whatever I interact with the public, I find that I'm surrounded by women young and old whose look is clearly manufactured and sculpted and purchased. The Huns and the Vandals were quite different groups. The Huns were nomadic invaders from the East that were fearsome enough to make the Byzantines sue for a temporary peace with their ancient enemies, the Sassanid Empire of Persia, and pay them a lot of gold to help them fortify their borders against the Huns and other Asiatic nomadic invasions. Sort of like the alliance of old enemies in Game of Thrones.

The Vandals were Germanic invaders from the north who mostly ended up in Northwest Africa and contributed to the Caucasian appearance of the Berber peoples from that area. They did a lot of damage along the way.

Jamie said...

You know those studies that purport to measure media bias? (I don't think I've expounded on this to anyone but my husband and Grok...yet.) So far I've been unable to find any that do more than count pro versus anti stories (Grok pointed me to one from several years ago that included "neutral," but that's it). I want one that attempts to assign a semantic value to the pro and anti statements - for instance, the word "gulag" would obviously score higher on the negative scale than "prison" or "detention center," and the word "doddering" higher than "slow" or "may have lost a step," whereas "sharp" and "in command" might be considered higher on the positive side than "capable." You'd have to start with a preliminary study asking a population sample to rate (that is, to assess connotations of) words and phrases.

I wonder what such a study would find, concerning media bias. Well... actually I don't wonder, but I'd sure like to see it quantified. "To each her own but (not our sort, dear)... 'I would still do it differently' (if I were to do something so declasse as to appear in a pageant), Utah curls (not beach waves), hyperfeminine (not, say, 'unapologetically feminine'), overtly Christian (not, say, 'openly Christian'), giant (not, say, 'prominent') crosses, stark (not, say, 'striking') contrast"...

It's not whether the MEN do, it's whether they get approval of their appearance from other women. And you get that by following what's trendy and currently popular. Pass through any makeup department in a Walmart or Walgreens and you'll see lots of displays showing what can be done with the various products.

You or I may look at them and go "Wow - that's... umm... yeah, no." But we're not the target audience. For the young women starting out, it's about setting expectations of how they're supposed to look, and they'll essentially be competing with their peers to get the 'right look'. And you put that look up on Instagram, FB, TicTox and get approval from other makeup and clothes junkies - that matters to them more than what guys think they look like.

It’s serious Gorillas in the Mist territory. We are talking tribal identification here, it’s long misreading gang tats or apparel. My theory is that young women religiously signaling with their jewelry are advertising for a compatible mate (husband). For those from NYC, San Francisco, etc. here are some simple guidelines:
- Crucifix (cross with a cruces Jesus) - likely Roman Catholic, or maybe Orthodox - but I know Orthodox wearing unadorned crosses.
- Unadorned cross - Protestant. Our (taken directly from the Jews) Ten Commandments bans worship of human depictions. This includes depictions of Jesus, Mary, all the saints, clergy, etc. Very often, the cross is relatively small, because:
- Large Unadorned Cross - Evangelical Protestants. They are shouting to the world that they have been saved, and will help save your soul too, if you just ask.
- Star of David - Jewish - Duh!
- Head coverings (other than at religious services) - absent anything else, probably Muslim. Other religions also cover women’s heads, but you pretty much know. For example, a woman wearing a head covering, but also a crucifix, is probably a nun. Etc.

So, how do you recognize that a woman is Mormon? After a couple years practicing in SLC, you pretty much just know. To me, the younger women (early 20s or so) just look wholesome. Often blond. Often naturally so. Then, they get married, and start having kids. This often means putting on a little weight, and chopping off their long hair, into a “mommy cut”. But, at least in SLC, it’s also an attitude thing - if they detect that you are a Gentile (which classification includes Jews), they feel entitled to cut in ahead of you in line, etc. I don’t get that feeling from Mormon men - who are overall good, clean cut, guys.

Now lets discuss the purple-haired nose-ringed ear-plugged ladies and trans-ladies running around...

Such mean-spirited intentional shaming of women by women. Is this net result of 50 years of feminism and progressive politics? Mean girls playground warfare?

All the more reason to stay home in your own garden, listening to 60s music and reading literature written before 1970. Many of us will become urban hermits in short order.

LOL. First, while I would never have a 50K watch, I also would not know if someone was wearing one if I saw them. Second, sounds like jealousy rearing its' ugly head to me. I had no idea who she was, but looking her up, she is rather plain and certainly does not wear form fitting clothes, and for good reason. Yet another reason to stay away from the NYT.
