"Vance in Rome trying to meet the Pope? What a theatrical performance. Hypocrite. Viper."

That's the 3rd most highly rated comment at the WaPo article "Vance meets with pope as Francis’s Easter message decries ‘logic of fear’/The visit at the Vatican brought together the ailing head of the Catholic church and a high-profile convert who has criticized the pope’s social teachings."

Second most highly rated comment: "I’m surprised Vance didn’t burst into flames."

Most highly rated: "Vance is just one of many fake religious politicians. They run around boasting of their faith, but practice none of the Christian values Jesus and the bible preached."

And here's the "logic of fear" statement in the Pope's Easter message: "How much contempt is stirred up at times towards the vulnerable, the marginalized and migrants. I appeal to all those in positions of political responsibility in our world not to yield to the logic of fear which only leads to isolation from others, but rather to use the resources available to help the needy, to fight hunger and to encourage initiatives that promote development. These are the ‘weapons’ of peace: weapons that build the future, instead of sowing seeds of death."

What must it be like to direct so much hatred at someone you've never met? It must be exhausting.

Dave Begley said...

As a conservative Jesuit-educated Catholic, I think it is a giant mistake for the Pope and institutional Church to meddle in the civil and political affairs of the United States.

Catholic Relief Services got millions (billions?) from the federal government to import illegal aliens into the United States; contrary to American law. We have a border and the government can enforce it.

Yes, there is lots of poverty in Mexico, Central America and South America but that doesn’t mean all the poor people there can move here.

The real problem is the culture of those countries. There’s no reason why they should remain so poor. At one time before WW2, Argentina was as well off as the US.

If I had an audience with the Pope, I would have told him he needs to reconvert Europe. When I was at Mass on Easter Sunday at the Conversion Chapel in Loyola, I can tell you that Spain is secularized. At the town 40 miles away from Loyola, the people that I talked to in the town square had no idea who St. Ignatius Loyola was. I was totally shocked.

If you are a fan of CIA meddling in foreign politics, Dem propaganda, and money-laundering on an industrial scale, you will miss the "humanitarian" "aid." If you are a poor resident of a third world nation, nothing will change except that perhaps your country will move in the direction of self-sufficiency.

The pope could not have stopped the holocaust. He did help many Roman Jews survive. Had he tried to do substantially more he would have brought the Nazis down on the Catholic Church. The Nazis were not above killing Catholic priests. Also, at that time millions of people were being killed, and it wasn't at all clear how things would end up. It wasn't as common for people then to view the war years as an especially and uniquely Jewish catastrophe as it became later.

As for the current pope, he doesn't seem to recognize that uncontrolled mass immigration can also be a "weapon" of sorts and not a "weapon of peace" either. "Initiatives that promote development" are also problematic. Build an airport and you're likely to promote outmigration, rather than economic development. The ambitious leave and nothing changes. Or perhaps much changes, and many flee those changes.

On the logic of fear.
Self-help books distinguish between two types of fear.
The first type is healthy. It is a rational response to a reasonable perception of potential harm. The logic of that type of fear is merely ordinary sensible thought.
The second type adds a layer of self-reinforcing panic onto the first type of fear, and spirals toward irrationality. If you are going to chide people for their "logic of fear", you should try to address why their perceptions of imminent harm have lost touch with reality. If you can't do that, convincingly, then the people feeling fear are probably experiencing plain old sensible rational fear, and you should keep your fashionable progressive opinions to yourself.

Yet if Jesus should pose to them the question He put to Peter, "Who do YOU say I am?" lefties would never, under any circumstances respond as he did, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God." At least not in this life.
