The Governor's mansion, after the fire.

The man arrested for the crime, Cody Balmer, 38, has confessed, the NYT reports.
The authorities said surveillance footage showed a person checking out the governor’s mansion before scaling a fence and using a hammer to break a window on the south side of the residence. He threw an object into the house, igniting a fire, the Dauphin County District Attorney said in a statement. He then broke into the building through a window on the east side and threw at least one more object into the house, starting another fire, before fleeing, the district attorney said.... When state troopers questioned him and asked what he would have done if [Pennsylvania Governor Josh] Shapiro had found him, Mr. Balmer said that he would have beaten the governor with his hammer, the affidavit said.

From a Grok analysis of the news stories:

The attack's timing, occurring hours after Shapiro held a Passover seder, has raised questions, but no official connection to hate crimes has been confirmed (Spotlight PA).... The lack of a confirmed motive highlights the complexity of such incidents, especially given the political and personal implications for Governor Shapiro, a prominent Democrat often mentioned as a future White House contender (BBC). Shapiro's response, refusing to be "deterred" and emphasizing his Jewish faith, underscores the personal impact (CNN).... As of April 14, 2025, the specific motivation behind Cody Balmer's actions remains unknown, with mental health issues appearing as a likely contributing factor based on his mother's statements. Unverified claims of anger over property issues exist but lack official support, and speculation about hate crimes is not confirmed....

I looked at Balmer's Facebook feed last night, and — aside from one obscure meme — I saw no politics or bigotry. I didn't scour the whole thing, but I went back years. My rough impression was of an aimless young man hanging around with other young men, in the manner of an unpromising teenager. But now I see that he's 38.

AND: The hammer makes me think of the attack on Nancy Pelosi's husband... and of the Night of Broken glass. It's a noisy way to enter a house, so it strikes fear. It suggests that you don't mean to sneak around but want an encounter, and in that encounter, it's a frightening and effective weapon.

I sure hope that the people here who made such a big deal about antisemitism on college campuses are equally forceful about that here in demanding harsh punishments.

I am quite certain no one of the GOP will take responsibility for fanning these flames.

Why would Republicans take responsibility for inciting terrorists? That's the Democrat Party that is vandalizing, assaulting, and arsonizing to frighten and intimidate their fellow citizens. When the corporate media fails or refuses to posit a motive for a crime, one is left to speculate. It does seem, however, that when there is a whiff of "racism" of some sort the reticence disappears. One also wonders why Shapiro immediately jumped to anti-Semitism when no motive has been released by his own State Police. Yes, I realize he said "if," not that it actually was, but will he issue a retraction if it turns out the perpetrator's motive was otherwise? We shall see, but not while holding our breath.

I certainly do condemn the arson attack on the Governor of Pennsylvania and his family. I certainly don't know why it happened in this individual case but I absolutely don't need to know that to condemn it.
Most of the politically-inspired violence in this country is coming from the left but I totally support the idea that the right might get started. This is why it is so important to have real reform. A civil war is a truly terrible thing especially for the young people. Sometimes I think there is a "cold" civil war going on between young men and young women with the women, or some women, saying "toxic" and the men, or some men, saying "bitch." Most of the young men who actually committed a dreadful, terroristic attack on defenseless people had recently been dumped by their girlfriend or wife. In the Before Time a young man had God, country, wife, family, job, sports, car and when things went wrong in one area the rest held him up. But now, many only have a smartphone and a FWB. It's not enough and then they get tired of games and the woman does, too.

I don't follow Shapiro as closely as I should, but a few things:

- He had a clear shot to be VP-candidate and either Kamala or HE declined. I think that was bad for Kamala, and showed her weakness, and if he declined I actually respect him more. Tim Walz was useless, Shapiro may have turned the tables.

- This country and the Left in particular have shown themselves to be virulently anti-semitic. The only Jewish nation on earth faces one of the most horrific modern terrorist attacks and within days organized protests against that nation, openly anti-semitic in nature, were rampant. No outrage on the Left, tacit approval from many, and open approval from some. I'll never forget that.

- Shapiro navigates successfully (from his career) in a purple state. As a politician, that's freaking hard - especially in today's day of polarization. Again, good for him.

...

I don't really align myself well either left or right, though I tend to be more right leaning in policy. But if I was the democratic party, I'd quash the anti-semitism and promote Shapiro behind the scenes while letting Newsom take the public punches.

And if I was on the Right, I'd ramp up my local efforts in PA and start planning on how to keep Shapiro from gaining traction. Or try to move him to switch parties on the basis of the anti-semitism on the left.

First of all, that's quite a Governor's mansion, wow. Looks like it was a formal ballroom that got attacked, a wing, so at least it's away from the primary residential area.

It seemed to me that Gov. Shapiro made political violence the theme of his press conference. I think it's unfair to say that he put religion front and center, or that he's encouraging more antisemitism that way. If the attack had happened on Christmas Eve and a Christian had pointed out the impact of that on a family, we wouldn't be criticizing them for including it.

It's not so easy to provide security for a sprawling estate, but I understand that alarms were triggered on the grounds and the response was reasonably fast. It would seem that the extent of the damage is more due to the accelerant used in the devices, not sloth.

I've read elsewhere that the perp lost his rather nice home to a state auction, where it sold for a pittance to Blackrock, and that the frequency of such events has skyrocketed in PA. We shall see.

As for the cheap partisan shots, there are certain commenters that exist only for this purpose, both short and long-winded. It's really easy to just ignore them.

@Althouse, moreover it is a potentially lethal weapon — it is capable of crushing through a human skull bone and seriously scrambling the grey matter inside. There was a case where a person defended himself from a hammer attack using a gun. IIRC the defense attorney had to smash a cadaver skull with a similar hammer to convince a judge that his client was defending himself from a potentially lethal attack.

I suspect most anti-Semites are anti-Christian, too. They pick on the Jews because Christians outnumber them.

Hatred of Jews is based on jealousy, that God chose the Jews to give birth to a messiah who would save humanity.

It's anti-Christ, I think. It's an irrational hate.

I could understand the hatred, if you lived in a war zone. But when the Jews have done nothing to you, and you hate them? It's very strange. I'm not sure if it's a medical condition or a spiritual one.

Political violence is the norm now. It began decades before floyd and will continue until it is widely condemned by the political class in this country.
Which won't happen. It is a very effective tool, along with lawfare, intimidation and blackmail.
It has been common practice, again for decades, to vilify those who defend against such violence.
When people who attempt to step up to stop violent actions are silenced, and put in jail, the powers that be are clearly showing what is allowed, and what is not.
The Governor in question has supported his own party, in all things-open border, allowing criminals to skate, etc.
And because he is a woke asshat, we are supposed to feel terrible that he was targeted. Let us forget the hundreds, if not thousands of Jews put at risk in our major cities because of his, and others Democrats, embrace of open borders, Islam, and violence.
When extreme behavior becomes the norm, the only option is to react to it in kind. That is a rational response that most of us have.
And we are told we are the problem. It is our fault. We are told this, again and again, by the left. and people like the Governor.
I don't really care what the perps motivation was, or what his party affiliation is- I want him punished, banished, and made to suffer real consequences.
FYI, if the Governor was a Republican, this wouldn't even be a story at all. It would be a narrative that Republican racist policies were responsible.
Violence is a tool used by communists, leftists, and Gramsci fans. It is almost exclusively a left wing tool.
When you support such tactics, and then are outraged when you are affected, is beyond karma.

For contrast: In 2023, the U.S. recorded 436 anti-Christian incidents, including vandalism, arson, gun-related crimes, bomb threats, and assaults. This marked more than double the number reported in 2022 and an 800% increase since 2018. Most incidents targeted churches, with nearly 400 involving vandalism or arson. There's a logical fallacy that usually shows up in these situations: When there's a mystery about an event (here, the motivation of the arsonist), but only a few facts about the event are publicly known, people baselessly assume that the answer to the mystery must lie in one or more of the KNOWN facts rather than considering the possibility that UNKNOWN facts hold the answers. For example, for all we know, the arsonist had a personal beef with a member of the governor's security team and this was an attempt to get that person fired for incompetence. Instead of considering such possibilities, people simply assume this has to do with Shapiro's religion or politics beliefs.

(I don't know if there's a name for this fallacy. Is it simply a variation of the Fallacy of Dichotomy?)

It isn't happening, and worse, it isn't being mentioned.

Thank god for the Bill of Rights.

Whether it's a right-winger trying to kill Democrat Josh Shapiro, a right-winger trying to kill Democrats Paul and Nancy Pelosi, or right-wingers trying to kidnap Democrat Gretchen Whitmer, it's time to renounce political violence from both sides.

Freder and all the leftists in the MSM constantly lie about J6. The NYT's has never retracted its claim that police were killed on J6 by protesters. They knew in January 2021 that no police were killed, but they kept lying. They've also covered up how many police were HOSPTIALIZED on J6 and from what. Because a lot of those "injured" police got injured from "friendly fire" and from their own tear gas.

Over 1000 J6er had their lives ruined by Biden's gestapo DoJ. 90 percent of them just walked into the capital building. They assaulted no one. Its greatest miscarriage of justice in US history. The DC courts were still sentencing and arresting J6ers in Decmember 2024, as a final "fuck you" to Donald trump and his supporters.

And why did Biden pardon Lt Byrd who murdered Ashli Babbitt? Answer: Because he's a shit human being.

Freder and all Leftists are immoral. Nothing is wrong if it helps the Left. Nothing is good if it hurts the left. They're amoral scum. They're not acting in good faith. They're cold blooded and out for power.

That seems anti-semitic to me. Peace to Gov Shapiro and his family . What a vile time to attack - during Passover week.
Saw a pic. Looks like Antifa to me - hard left, so fits with the antisemitism.

I am quite certain no one of the GOP will take responsibility for fanning these flames.

So condemning antisemitism committed by your fellow, leftist thugs is 'fanning the flames?'

That may be the stupidest thing I'll read all week. And it's only Monday.

When Reagan was shot, he said about the assassin, "Find out what his beef is."

Everything that someone does has a motive, but we may never be sure of what this guy's motive was if it wasn't a rational one. Sometimes people just want to do something just to do something.

What about Trump pardoning 1500 Jan 6 criminals.

A study/survey released last week revealed 55 percent of Democrats are OK with assassinating Trump and/or Elon Musk.

Freder shows up to bitch about a rally that got out of hand in order to claim moral equivalence.

Do fuck off.

Jesus, things veer off in here.

I think antisemitism is a plausible claim for motive. I note that no one has asked if this guy is Catholic. When Shapiro was AG he issued a report on sexual abuse of minors by priests. Made a big splash here. Most Catholics were suitably appalled, but I was amazed at the number of them who thought it was a media smear.

MJB Wolf: I have a former college friend called Mark whom I and everyone I know have had to block out of our lives. I instituted comment screening on my own blog because of him, but he follows me around the internet using the very same M.O. of incitement and retreat. I would be utterly unsurprised if it is not the same person, and yes, he is extremely intelligent, multilingual, and a lawyer and onetime media personality in Russia -- mocking Putin AND Americans. I think everyone should own a copy of The Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker, especially people who are vulnerable. If you are sending your daughter to college or into the world, make this book required reading before she goes, though it's good training for males too. I'm breaking a de Becker rule by even mentioning this. It's a shame he can't get help. I bet I'll hear from him now. Althouse, please screen his comments. It gets worse.
