In the middle of the night, Justice Alito writes, “In sum, literally in the middle of the night, the Court issued unprecedented and legally questionable relief without giving the lower courts a chance to rule, without hearing from the opposing party, within eight hours of receiving the application, with dubious factual support for its order, and without providing any explanation for its order. I refused to join the Court's order because we had no good reason to think that, under the circumstances, issuing an order at midnight was necessary or appropriate.”

"Easter's date is determined by a complex system linking the lunar calendar, the spring equinox, and a fixed date for the spring equinox. It falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon that follows the vernal equinox, which is fixed on March 21 for most churches. This ensures Easter always occurs after the start of spring."

As you may know, I enjoy discovering new music. I stream my music via Amazon Unlimited, and one feature they have is Community Playlists that users have created, and they make recommendations to me based on what I have listened to. This week, it recommended a playlist called "ELOish," curated by a user named Susan. It's exactly what you'd expect: Songs that have an Electric Light Orchestra sound or vibe to them. And it's a really good playlist. If you like ELO's music and have Amazon Unlimited, just do a search for "ELOish" and it should come right up on the User Playlists section.

For those who don't have Amazon Unlimited, here are some of the tracks that I liked best:

The Apples In Stereo - Dance Floor (Travellers in Space and Time, 2010)
https://youtu.be/C66yhRwpt7s?si=Zz7pLKEQy_q-Edcf

Silvertwin - Ploy (Silvertwin, 2021)
https://youtu.be/9csNNP3Ni0E?si=W8L_Vt8R3F1a9suq

Silvertwin - Take Me On (Silvertwin, 2021)
https://youtu.be/9g0tVr6i7Ic?si=yltNh4akU0Q_uC32

L.E.O. - Don't Let It Go (Alpacas Orgling, 2006)
https://youtu.be/PRp8rOlDTQg?si=cB_MpuCesibdYK40

L. E. O. - Ya Had Me Goin' (Alpacas Orgling, 2006)
https://youtu.be/9g0tVr6i7Ic?si=yltNh4akU0Q_uC32

I've listened to all three of the albums those tracks are on, and enjoyed all of them.

"no good reason to think that, under the circumstances, issuing an order at midnight was necessary or appropriate"

Except the fact that there is video of detainees leaving Bluebonnet detention facility on buses heading to the airport ... and then turning back.

Alito knows this is why they acted, but is carrying Trump's water like the lackey he is.

RE: ELOish, I played cello through high school and always loved the sound. I was a fan of ELO’s early music when they featured two cellists and a violinist as part of their core band members.

I believe ELO predated the fully orchestrated sound of mid-70’s alum rock.

NY Post: "Rep. Jamie Raskin threatened foreign leaders who “facilitated authoritarianism in our country” by currying favor with President Trump on issues like deportation — saying that Democrats will not “look kindly” on his supporters when they “come back to power.”"

Democrats' tariffs are serious. Ask the two astronauts Biden left stranded up the space station because Musk, a Trump supported, would get PR win.

Still making my way through Handmaid's Tale. Almost done with Season 2 now. A thought hit me:

When Atwood wrote the novel in 1985, IVF had just started and was far from mainstream. She might not have been that familiar with it. Plausible that a regime using any means necessary to counter a fertility crisis would round up the fertile women and just force them to have sex. But the series is set in basically the year it came out - 2017. All the technology of real 2017 seems to exist, even if much of it is kept from the non-elite classes. So why wouldn't the regime do IVF?

If they have a religious objection to putting embryos in the freezer forever, they could just implant all the embryos in various women, increasing the chances that some will take, and if they don't, well, it's God's will. If the wanking part bothers them, there are ways to harvest sperm directly out of the male reproductive tract - no orgasm required.

IVF could have given the writers even more opportunities for Grand Guignol feminist body horror: women forced to give up eggs, women forced to be surrogates, women forced to see their kid come out of another woman's hoo-hah, women kept under industrial conditions like battery hens, etc.

But of course the showrunners would have fewer opportunities for the show's main calling card: wives helping their husbands rape transgressive women. That apparently attracts female eyeballs like nothing else.

I'm a bit puzzled about the recent FSU shooting. The media hasn't said too much about it and hasn't had the usual loudmouth anti-gun activists on. I find that a bit unusual in that the shooters parents were both law enforcement officers and most likely Trump supporters. Normally such things disappear if the shooter skews left politically, I wonder if there something they're not telling us about him?

I lost most of my interest in album rock when the trend toward the symphonic began. The hybrid offspring tended to sterility IMO.

Speaking of "authoritarianism": Alito Dissents

"“In sum, literally in the middle of the night, the Court issued unprecedented and legally questionable relief without giving the lower courts a chance to rule, without hearing from the opposing party, within eight hours of receiving the application, with dubious factual support for its order, and without providing any explanation for its order,” Alito wrote in the fiery, five-page rebuke."

You mean to tell me, the highly touted, procedural minded, by the book Roberts, just brushed procedure aside in favor of granting relief to illegals?

Are the Supremes compromised? Why did Roberts, who had just said, things ought to procced via the lower courts, change his mind?

So many questions.

Lem Vibe Banditory said...

I just saw our stemmed DB (up top) also posted about the Supremes about-face. This is highly irregular for the chief. Could the court be punishing Trump? It could be just that.

Kakistocracy said...

Justice Alito either trusts that the Trump administration will not deport individuals to CECOT without allowing a reasonable opportunity to file a habeas challenge, as required by the Supreme Court, or he doesn't care. However, the Supreme Court, with good reason, does not trust the Trump administration, thus the order.

I've created an Amazon Music playlist called Shoegaze and Dream Pop. (Not an original title, I know.) It's great and I miss it now that we've moved toward creating holiday playlists with hundreds of songs.

"...the Supreme Court, with good reason, does not trust the Trump administration, thus the order."

So, the Supremes are acting preemptively then. Got it.

Interesting photo. The sky, so serene, glows with the sun’s gentle appearance. It really captures the idea of God coming to calm humanity’s turbulent waters.

Alito's half-hearted dissent, claiming "the Court improperly used our procedures, which we make up and can change at any time," reveals just how weak the Trump administration's position is here. It's so weak that even Alito knows it.

No one delivers fiery, indignant dissents like Alito. Yet, if this lackluster, going-through-the-motions effort is all he can muster -- this dissent ultimately makes me feel better about how soft Trump's support is at SCOTUS right now.

Not much traction for scoring points on gun control when the kid stole the gun issued to his mother, who is a deputy sheriff.

That "ELOish" playlist starts with a song by Helen Reddy, and includes songs by the Moody Blues, Led Zeppelin and Dave Edmunds, among others. I might not have chosen a couple of the songs, but overall, it is a very good playlist.

David Hogg, Vice-Chair, DNC -
“We go out there, as Democrats, all the time and say democracy is the most important thing. We have to defend democracy. We fail to acknowledge that this generation, democracy is what put us through school shooter drills and school shootings. It’s what put us through the climate crisis and so much more.”

Honesty 101 - the Democrat party is not too keen on democracy, after all.

Which side leans authoritarian, again?

Oh, a certain faction of the gun grabbers would love to disarm the police. This was part of the defund-the-police movement. But of course, the grownup gun grabbers keep pulling them aside and telling them the point is to disarm the citizenry.

There is no climate crisis. It’s the biggest scam in the history of the world so academics can get grants from the government so that companies like Nextera can get billions from the federal government so that billions can be given to Dem politicians from the developers, so that trillions can be added to the federal debt, so that YOUR electric bill will go up.

Lawnerd said...

Hogg is an attention whore dimwit. The democrats will pay a high price for elevating that moron to a leadership position. I love the video of Hogg giving a rally speech where the video was made black and white and grainy and a Hitler speech soundtrack was put in, the resemblance was uncanny.

So Supreme Court judges have opinions. Good for them. It is my understanding for it to count the whole of the court must rule on it as a point of constitutional law. Otherwise it don't mean shit.

From DataRepublican on X

“What infuriates me about the left's defense of endless deficit spending is that it's killing the future of every program they claim to care about.

We've reached a point where we don't even discuss universal health care anymore. Have you noticed that debate vanished? The money's gone, and everyone knows it.

Debt doesn't care who's in charge. It strangles Democratic and Republican priorities alike. Balance the budget first, and then can we come back to the table with real ideas, including universal coverage.

Instead, the left is torching Teslas, cheering on swatting, and flirting with political violence in their desperation to defend the status quo. Why?”
