At the Friday Night Café...

IMG_1461

... you can talk about whatever you want.

The unfortunate storefront in my photograph used to be Paul's Books, one of the loveliest places in Madison. It had been around since 1954, and I didn't know that it had closed. I hadn't walked downtown in quite a while. I prefer to walk in the woods, but I thought I'd change my ways today. I pictured myself looking at the poetry books at Paul's Books. But no, Paul's was gone. And this insanity was there. You're sorry? I'm sorry.

Family walking down the street, kid says "Mommy, what does that mean?" I suppose the answer would depend on who mommy votes for.

Glad I don’t live there…this evening there were families out and about at the pizza truck ( a fire truck with a wood fired oven on board), a bunch of people from the golf tournament, a bunch of people for a wedding tomorrow…a glorious evening…until the deer move on our new plantings later on…

Perfect: COVID.gov Now Goes to Page Debunking 'Proximal Origins' Paper, Trashing Fauci

"Yes, I voted for this. I think every Donald Trump voter will get a grin on their face when they realize that Trump is trashing every single instance he can find of the corrupt gaslighting of the anti-American transnationalist regime.
When I saw this post on X, I barked a laugh. For years, Americans have been gaslit about COVID, force-fed a narrative in which brave "experts" and "public servants" worked day and night to uncover the truth, protect Americans and the world from bats, and fought bravely against liars, trolls, and "fringe epidemiologists."

COVID.gov was a key part of this propaganda campaign. No matter which video you watched about COVID on YouTube, you were pointed at the site. "Fact checks" that "debunked" indisputably factual assertions relied on Fauci's propaganda site. It is where people were told the most outrageous lies, and in many ways, most importantly, the fundamental lie upon which all others were built: COVID was a natural disease, and the public health establishment was the only reliable source for information on how to combat Gaia's revenge on us.

That lie was so vital because if people knew the truth--that the US, UK, and Chinese governments intentionally created and then accidentally released a deadly disease that killed millions of people--we wouldn't trust them as they upended our society, transferred trillions of dollars of wealth to an elite, devastated hundreds of millions of families, destroyed the education of tens of millions of children, rigged an election by illegally changing the voting laws, censored billions, and forced billions to take an experimental and dangerous vaccine. Regardless, we are truly blessed by the bravery and fortitude of our countrymen and women.

But I miss book stores, used or new.

Looks like 14th amendment definitions are headed to the SC- finally. And the absolute birthright, period, end of discussion fanatics still can't explain why American Samoans, born on American territory- American Samoa, aren't citizens. Meanwhile, there are multiple examples of children born to diplomats in the USA presenting their birth certificates for passports or whatever, and being granted "citizenship" by bureaucrats because they were born in the USA. Bureaucratic inertia is apparently how the whole notion in the mid 1900s came about that birth here granted citizenship, period. Easier then investigating.

Meanwhile we have this case:
https://www.cnn.com/2025/04/17/us/lopez-gomez-citizen-detained-ice-florida/index.html

Born in the USA to Mexican parents, immigration status not mentioned in any article. Whisked off to Mexico before his first birthday. Came back to the USA a few years ago, stopped by police, unable to clearly communicate with them as he is fluent in the Mayan language Tzotzil, and not in English or Spanish. And is illiterate. Period, even in Tzotzil, which has a written form based on the Latin alphabet.

So can't communicate with the average American, a dual citizen of both Mexico since his parents are Mexican, and he was born here, and absolute birthright advocates say he's an American, period, end of discussion. So, if he's American, explain why we shouldn't charge his parents, both of them, apparently now here in the USA, with child abuse? They failed to provide their child, a USA citizen, with an education. Seems absolutely fair to me.

I have a very old (as in very, very old) book on gardening. One of its recommendations is to take an empty bushel basket to the circus when it comes to town and buy a basketful of lion sh*t. Spread around your flower beds, it was guaranteed by the author to keep deer and other animals away from your landscaping.

Bygone days. Things lost to the modern world include big wooden bushel baskets, circuses with “lion tamer” acts, and circuses coming to town with those big, long trains.

And Paul’s Books.

Is Harvard the best school? Better than Columbia or Brown. But the best school is now Google. If you show potential in tech at 18, just sign up there, you will get a stipend of $250,000 py to be taught to be a modern master of some particular field.

As far as humanities, my High School, years ago, taught me the whole gamut. Nothing I had to take in undergrad in humanities was much more sophisticated than that except perhaps some parts of economics, mainly the definition of terms.

@Althouse: I wonder if Paul’s inventory will end up in Viroqua at Driftless Bookstore. The owner got his start by buying inventories of failing used bookstores. Driftless Books is housed in an old tobacco warehouse. It’s a hidden gem. You and Meade could probably spend hours there.

To this day, I won't patronize a business that had a Black Lives Matter sign on their window, door or website.

Back in the day -- what, 2021? -- I had occasion to visit Portland, OR. All glass-fronted businesses had BLM signs. I went out to lunch with my sister, who is a complete Leftist imbecile. We left her law office, where she helps criminal scum to rob their betters using the courts, and wandered down the street, looking for a place to have a meal. At the place we ended up at, a couple of decidedly shifty looking Negroes were blocking the sidewalk out front. My sister approached them, attempting to explain to them that "I speak Jive", but it turned out they were just druggie thugs, and had nothing to do with the restaurant. "G'wan in!".

You have to understand, Portland doesn't really have enough Negroes to have a Negro problem. They mostly live in NE, and rob, rape, shoot and kill each other. That is their nature. But your typical white Portland asshole really wants to have a criminal Negro subculture in operation, so they can virtue-signal by sucking its big, Black dick. So, they do their best to encourage the local scum, of whatever color.

About the Karmelo Anthony case…I wish we could all just butt out and let the court handle things. We don’t know what happened at the tent, whether this was an ongoing boy’s game of invading each other’s territory, whether Mr. Anthony had a history of taunts or pushing the boundaries in sports, or this was just a little teenage-boy roughhousing. The schools are in the same district and Mr. Anthony and Mr. Metcalfe played multiple sports so this may well not be their first conflict. We don’t know if Mr. Metcalfe had a short fuse. We don’t know a lot of things. We don’t know if the stabbing was deliberate or Mr. Anthony waved the knife in a way he intended to just be a threat and Mr. Metcalfe moved into the path of the knife in a way that surprised Mr. Anthony.

In any case, Mr. Anthony confessed, there were witnesses and a grand jury will be meeting. I would like to see us all put our attention on something in life where we have some influence instead of trying this case in the court of public opinion.

What cases aren't being done in the court of public opinion anymore?? The MOB mentality got us here to begin with. I blame the MSM for lying about innocent people and praising criminals. What is justice anymore?

You must be new around here. Some people would provide links way off topic that are...hard to forget seeing.

I've been on this list for 20 years. Beyond that, one can always check where a link—even a hot-link—is going before following it. (For instance, using a computer, hover your mouse over the link; on iOS hold your finger down on the link for second or two.) I recommend checking in advance before following the link.

Yes, it's sad. It used to be a destination. You'd go to State Street to wander around the shops and you'd patronize cafes and restaurants. But now, it's almost all restaurants that are there to serve the student population that is already in the area. There are a few shops. I can't say there are none, but it's overwhelmingly fast food.

Paul's is gone. The Fjallraven store is gone. At least there's still B-Side Records and Jazzman. And Ragstock.

There's the art museum. And the Farmer's Market.

There's a lot left to State Street, really. I'm just wistful about what is gone.

Lawnerd said...

Is State Street Brat still there? My first trip to Madison was in June 1993. I gave a talk at a yeast genetics meeting. The next day a friend and I spent twelve hours straight drinking pitchers of Old Mil at State Street Brat. We sat at an outdoor table and all through the day people we knew would pass by and join us for a beer or two.
