"A conservative commentator took offense at the statement conservatives 'are really gratified to see a conservative person on television.'"

"The person who made the statement wondered if 'gratified' is now a 'trigger' word. This made me think the commentator might think 'gratified' implies sex."

For the annals of Things I Asked Grok.

I was reading "Meghan McCain Gets Triggered By Carrie Coon After 'White Lotus' Star Said Former 'View' Co-Host Was 'Gratified' For Conservative Character" (Deadline).

So, McCain is the "conservative commentator." The "White Lotus" actress Carrie Coon made the statement:
“I do think people like Meghan McCain and her community are really gratified to see a conservative person on television,” Coon told the publication. “I have conservative people in my life who reached out to me to say that was an awesome conversation, because I don’t think it vilifies [the 'White Lotus' character] Kate.”

 McCain snapped at her:

“Yes Carrie, I am ‘gratified that the conservative character represented one not making a fool of herself,” McCain posted on X [and added] “Unlike the progressive liberal you’re representing who is sleeping with hotel staff and showing her tits to everyone.”

Coon said "I didn’t realize my quote was so inflammatory. Is ‘gratified’ a new trigger word?"

Is McCain a little dumb or is she just desperate for attention?

Replace "conservative" with "black," "female," "LGBT," etc, and see how the sentences read.

Ms Coon (yikes!) was engaging in Memsahib Concerned Condescension. Ms McCain took offense.

Maybe McCain thought the comment was patronizing? While I can't say I'm a big fan of hers, Meghan McCain has never struck me as unintelligent, and gratified isn't exactly an SAT word.

Tits are a dime a dozen these days. All the interest is in presentation of self that's forced on you if eyes will be on you for a long time, as in a solo pianist. A decision has to be made. There's nothing to look at much. There's the Yuja Wang approach and the Martha Argerich approach.

We need more conservative tits represented on TV.

Both.

Perhaps bipartisan reconciliation is not one of Meghan McCain's values.

My interpretation of this little scuffle is that Coons appears to be lumping McCain in with all the MAGA supporters, but Coons is ignorant of McCains distain for Trump and MAGA

Are her tits any good? Should I go watch the show when my wife’s out shopping for groceries?

Sometimes it’s hard to believe what women will fight over. Harder still to figure why Althouse cares enough about either of these women to make a post.

Who is Carrie Coon? Should we take a deeper dive into the "showing her tits to everyone" aspect of this story?

Big Mike stated the obvious already so I don't have to, but I do concur.

However I would watch a Three Stooges style pie fight on one of those Sunday shows.

Coon doesn't play the conservative character. There is a set of 3 women and 2 of them are flummoxed to realize that the other one voted for Trump. That one is played by Lesley Bibb. That character is not portrayed in the way you might expect conservatives to be treated in a show that you assume is put together by liberals.

Here's a clip of a key scene and of Bibb and Coon talking about it:

I'm confused. White Lotus is a lot past my bedtime, but I love cultural garbage that reminds me of how boring it is to be rich enough to need to travel to prove one's expanded experience.

Was I in the bathroom when Carrie Coons' conservative tv character did anything but try to be civil to her miserable, slattern, leftist friends?

I used to travel to such resorts with a wealthy, generous college roommate. I loved the novelty of luxury hotels -- but sheer misery and boredom was palpable among those who expected them. She had no such illusions, so we had a lot of silly fun.

In fairness, I'd saw off a finger to have that unlimited clam dip lying in a golden swan-shaped bathtub in the Garden of the Gods at Caesar's again. I've spent decades trying to imitate it, but you have to score those big, fat, raw, cold-water clams, and that isn't happening at retail.

McCain is bizarre. Maybe her hairstyle is cutting off circulation to the brain. Chip off the old block.

McCain is like her dad, and John Roberts for that matter, a go-along-to-get-along Republican, who has always thought of herself as an enlightened Conservative and is stunned to have it questioned, or worse, challenged by the normies - because then, she's had to come up with reasons that sound unconvincing, even to herself. It's getting harder for politicians of this stripe to hide within the herd now, thank goodness. Looking at you, Lindsey Graham.

I started watching "Wolf Hall" upon some commenter's suggestion. Early on, one man makes a snarky remark to another man about some not-so-nice woman being flat chested, which I believe was meant to be slightly humorous, given the context.

Didn't ring true to me. A man like that wouldn't say something like that to a man like that about a woman like that in those circumstances.

And now it occurs to me that the exchange was meant for the women in the audience.

Carrie Coon. What a name. Carrie Rc. Coon outside, please. Good thing she's not black.

And damn, I thought society had evolved and we were past Megan McCain. Talk about a has-been. She was never a Conservative. She voted for Harris and supported Hillary and Biden. In the past, she claimed to be a "Bad Republican" and is now a Democrat.

I actually skimmed through her book, and it was one long whine about how liberal/leftists didn't want to be her friend. They kept attacking her as a Rightwinger - when she wasnt. Said Megan: nobody hates Trump, racism, sexism, homophobia, etc etc. more then me.

RCOCEAN II said...

To the liberal/left anyone who doesn't support the current party line 100 percent is either a Rightwinger, Far-Right, Conservaitve or a Nazi. Musk has suddenly become a "nazi" after years as liberal.

My definition of conservative is a person not sufficiently intimidated by social pressure. This is why fewer women are conservative, because social pressure can be engineered.

Note to Carrie Coon. When you are so far to the extreme left that even Megan McCain looks conservative to you, you might want to re-examine were you think the center is.

There's a group of three friends, one of which is played by Carrie Coon as Laurie Duffy, Leslie Bibb as Kate Bohr and Michelle Monaghan as Jaclyn Lemon. Of the three, Kate Bohr is the conservative who lives in Texas and knows lots of really nice Trump voters. We are given no indication that Laurie Duffy, a corporate lawyer living in NYC is conservative.

Carrie Coon was in the Missouri billboards picture and in one season of Fargo. She's married to Tracy Letts, actor and playwright. They both had Midwestern roots before going Hollywood.

Meghan McCain may have been drinking -- or maybe she was tense, keyed-up and ready to pounce on something. She is the (third) wife of Ben Domenech who is very bright and quite conservative. He has extensive editing experience, and I would have suggested that he take over editing her tweets/x-ings, but he's let loose with some wild tweets of his own over the years.

1. This isn't for me.

2. There's gonna be floppy weiners - sooner or later.

Peachy, yes, I love the worst tv crap. But I'm ecumenical. I'm also re-reading "A Texan Looks at Johnson" and all of James Burnham. Steve Sailer is my go-to statistician.

I'm an 80-year old man in a 50-something woman's body. Though I don't feel the need to change my "gender" beyond wearing an old cartigan, eating cream of celery soup, and bitching about the commies.

I have a very bemused husband.

Why does Althouse care about Carrie Coon? The answer, my friends, involves soft summer nights in Spring Green, WI and the magic of theater under the stars.
Personally speaking, I saw her in a terrific production of Who’ s Afraid of Virginia Woolf in Chicago. She met her husband, Tracy Letts, in that show. He played George.

Megan McCain should go home. She's ridden daddy's coattails for far too long, and no, she's not a conservative commentator but rather a daughter-of-faux conservative-RINO.

Except for Mommy. Her dad, John McCain III, married money. If I remember correctly, it was beer money - her grandfather owned, I believe, the Budweiser distributorship for Phoenix and, I think that Cindi, her mother, was an only kid. Some have suggested that Cindy’s money was why McCain, III, had left the Navy, to enter politics (he was a Captain (O6), and had been offered a star, putting him on track to follow his father and grandfather, who had both earned four stars)

Not on TV and movies! Hollywood is shy about the titties post-Weinstein. What the Lotus series does feature is full frontal penises (no attendant open vaginas), plus the de rigueur gay ass-fucking. It throws in a few nice racks, like those of the delightful Aimee Lou Wood, but the post-HW trope of women having sex with their bra is mostly continued.

Megan McCain changed her party when Daddy was running for President as a birthday present for him, so she could vote for him without feeling like a hypocrite. She is conservative in name only. She was a Biden supporter until they ditched him, and now she is acting like she is upset at what some Hollyweird people say about her adopted party. Maybe she should look into some of the things that SHE has said about actual conservatives that SHE didn't like.

I find it funny that Megan McCain thinks an actress is her character. Why get offended? If you like that there is a conservative character , enjoy that. Meghan is lightweight and not really credible as a conservative.
