LA Times reports that the now-empty Santa Ynez Reservoir has been offline since Feb 2024 because the EPA-mandated cover was damaged.
The cost to repair? $130k!! Not millions, not billions. thousands.
That reservoir holds 117M gallons for Pacific Palisades.
Down for essentially 2 fire seasons and they couldn't prioritize or expedite the repair? That is malfeasence or incompetence.
Magic 8 ball says...."both"

I once told my Spousal Unit (from CA) about how sturgeon fishing is done and she thought I was making it up.

I figure that Biden's EPA will blame Trump. "Kids in cages. Kids in cages."

Saw on another source that they had to hire someone to repair the cover and it took 9 months to award the contract. Ridiculous!

Goetz von Berlichingen said...

101: Your info conforms with my source. Libs in LA are saying 'it wouldn't have made a difference any way."
That's why they get the government that they have. Good and hard.

Enigma mentioned in a yesterday's comment section a problem that exists, that's known to exist, and there doesn't seem to be any way to stop it before the fact. Firefighters who enjoy fires so much and/or want to be the hero and first on the scene so much that they join FDs then- set fire as surreptitiously as possible. So they can enjoy just watching the fire or be the first on the scene or even the one who discovers the fire! A problem for both professional and VFDs. Shortly after I moved here to ruralville our local FD removed a volunteer who was suspiciously first on the scene at too many fires for it be an accident... but not enough proof to formally charge him with any crimes. I found out about this through a backhand route when the same person volunteered to be a Scout leader- and I was advised to not approve his application for whatever excuse I wanted to muster up. Apparently there were other suspicions about him as well.

Weeding out potential problems with regards to people is a problem itself. Why were there Scout leaders who molested young men? Because that's where their prey was. And if they had no history of abuse, there's no way of knowing what they may do in the future. My criteria for accepting volunteers was simple. No childless unmarried males with no prior association with the troop. So a former Scout not yet hitched was acceptable- and I had two of those, one of them one of my sons. Every other accepted volunteer was a parent with a child in the troop or a child that used to be the troop. Foolproof? No, but we never had problems.

Why do schools have problems with child molesters? Because that's where the prey is. Something new, or something was remarkably unreported in the past, female teachers seducing- or allowing themselves to be seduced- by students. How do you preemptively weed them out? Same with male teachers who abuse students- how do you preemptively weed them out?

Then there's the opposite end of the problem- believe all accusers. We had a popular teacher accused of sexual abuse by a trio of HS juniors- with bad grades, particularly in his class. Immediately suspended without pay. Of course, police involvement, family services, etc. and so on and so forth. After two years, turns out there was plenty of evidence the girls made it up- to get even for their poor grades he deservedly awarded them. He received a half hearted apology from officialdom, back pay, and promptly retired.

LAFD’s $300K-per-year diversity chief sparks fury for defending DEI by blaming the victim: ‘He got himself in the wrong place’

https://nypost.com/2025/01/12/us-news/lafds-diversity-chief-sparks-fury-for-defending-dei-by-blaming-the-victim/

In a video defending the department’s DEI hiring practices, Deputy Chief Kristine Larson — who heads the Equity and Human Resources Bureau — addressed accusations that female firefighters aren’t strong enough to carry a man out of a burning building.

Her response: “He got himself in the wrong place if I have to carry him out of a fire.”

What do you suppose the odds of continued employment would be for a man who made a similar comment about rescuing someone like... well, her?

The bureaucracy first had to come up with a requirement for contract. This needed a committee to figure out just what was needed. The committee first had to be selected and appointed. Then they had to decide just what was needed in the contract, then how to word the requirements so that just the right contractor would be able to fill it.

I wouldn't be surprised in all that they forgot to include a completion date.

From USA Today, today: "The National Archives is looking for volunteers with an increasingly rare skill: Reading cursive." Click HERE for Story

Apparently, AI can't read cursive.

More from the story: "To volunteer, all that’s required is to sign up online and then launch in. “There's no application,” she said. “You just pick a record that hasn't been done and read the instructions. It's easy to do for a half hour a day or a week.”"

I would do this, if I had spare time.

Can a fire be racist? LA Fires are systemic. Just saying.

Howard said...

That was also confirmed by my Cal fire retired brother who's son is currently supervising a national guard hand crew in Malibu. There's nothing you can do to stop a wildfire in hundred mile an hour winds. Maybe could have saved a couple homes, maybe a dozen... it wouldn't have stopped the overall devastation.

Howard: I believe that the 3x1M gallon tanks were exhausted @ 4 hrs in. If true, the consumption rate is about 1.3M gallons/hour. That reservoir could have supplied water under pressure for another 150 hours, roughly. Had it been up and running it could have been sending water under high pressure via gravity to the firefighters while being filled by the pumps. That could have gone on much longer. Weeks? A month or two? It is really a huge scandal in the making.

Goetz von Berlichingen said...

Mason: I saw that female FC. She couldn't have carried her twin sister out of a burning building.

🚨 THE VIEW'S SUNNY HOSTIN: In terms of politicizing this fire, I am disgusted. I am thrilled to learn Mexico sent aid. You know, the very people Trump wants to build a wall against. Well, they must've climbed over the wall, because now they're here, putting out the fires. Canada, who he wants to make the 51st state - they are here helping us. https://twitter.com/i/status/1878845258210906206

She is so disgusted that she politicized her own comment. Can't wait until her husband goes to prison for bilking insurance companies with the RICO charges they have against him after she said she understands why the United Health guy got shot. Wonder if she would feel the same about her corrupt thieving husband. Karma is going to hit you hard little Sunnyless girl.

wendybar said...

She was too fat to get herself out of the way anyways. Maybe there SHOULD be some type of regimen to keep firefighters in shape so they CAN save people. Enough about black gay women. They proved over and over again, that they suck at jobs they get put in BECAUSE of their gender and color. It's time for merit based hiring again. PERIOD!! We aren't paying taxes so we can say, Look how tolerant we are!!!

IF CNN were smart, and we all know that isn't true....they would hire Scott Jennings for a Prime Time show. He is a gem among a pile of feces.

@VigilantFox
CNN Panelist Squirms as Scott Jennings Exposes Who’s Really Fueling Division Over LA Wildfires

John Avlon never saw this coming.

AVLON: “I think also in this environment right now, where immediately there’s disinformation flowing through social media networks that cleaves down partisan lines, that is stopping our ability to be united. And we should not just accept that as inevitable. That is weakening our ability to unite as a nation and as cities.”

@ScottJenningsKY
: “Let me answer your criticism by asking you a question. Do you think it was uniting or dividing while in the midst of these fires for the Democrats to go to Sacramento and, in an emergency session, vote to appropriate $50 million to ‘Trump-proof’ California, to sue the Trump administration, which hasn’t even taken office yet? Do you think that was a good priority and a good time to do that, or no? Was that dividing, was that divisive, or was that uniting?”

AVLON: (Gives up) “I’m not going to go take that, you know, bait because I don’t know the details of that particular [story].”

Asians are in a weird place in the US. Immigrants often come from home countries with facto one-party rule, which mixes center-right finance with (tribal) moderate social support. The've tended to join left-wing parties as being non-white, yet have never dealt with woke grievance hierarchy stuff. All Asians in the US also face the "white adjacent" tag or are considered white by blacks (see the Korean resistance to the Rodney King riots in LA). Not long before that, they were treated like garbage by whites in California too.

Biden's redistribution/equity programs are likely the biggest factor here, as Asians in the US are financially strong and know what it takes to succeed. They did not get ahead through grievance politics, and per the race hierarchy they must outperform to succeed in an affirmative action environment.

As Enigma said, a weird place. I worked with a Chinese M.E. on a project and got to know him pretty well. In a conversation he mentioned that, like many Chinese, his parents expected him to grow up to be a doctor or a scientist. He further mentioned that he didn't pay attention to bigotry because "everybody doesn't like somebody". That was thirty years ago and I carry it with me today.

I knew several in Atlanta decades ago. Ukrainians too. Came in the 80’s and 90’s. Flew to JFK, one to New Hampshire. Fake ID from what they all called “Polish mafia.” In one case, the guy just used regular postage stamps on a crudely fashioned “passport.” He wanted to live in the same country as Angela Davis, his hero.

Most of them were trafficked laborers, locked up at night and forced to build houses during the day. Fed very little. Beaten and threatened if they tried to escape. No way the employers didn’t know that then — or now. E -Verify could have rescued them.

The border still has coyotes who do this … and now American nonprofits colluding with foreign governments. And with the coyotes. The lucky ones and violent gang members (many of whom know the ropes by being coyotes themselves) surrender at the border and get government bennies. The unlucky ones are still basically enslaved by coyotes. Thanks, Democrats.

If you irrigate and live in the windy desert that is Southern Calfornia, there will be many wildfires. If the region had been developed in the fashion of much of Arizona and New Mexico (adobe houses; rocks and desert plant landscaping), then there wouldn't be as much vegetation to burn. If wooden houses hadn't been built near native trees in wind corridors...

It's not the "libs" here, rather, it's everyone who took the risk of living there for 100 years. The region was developed by free-range explorers and many people on the right wing. California didn't vote deep blue until the 1980s and 1990s, when military base closures took away defense jobs and the economy shifted heavily to recent non-European immigrants.
