"[I was] at the top of the mountain, and gradually it worked its way down. And then I looked up and life came back. I truly believe in looking up."

"You’re always in a better mood if you’re looking up. It’s one of those things you notice, walking around London, or it doesn’t matter where. They’re all looking down. There’s nothing down there."

Said Ringo Starr, quoted in "Ringo Starr: ‘I only want to be in a band. You can’t play Yesterday just on drums’/In a rare interview, the Beatle says Liverpool was always the capital of country music and reveals the lesson he learnt from Elton John’s mum" (London Times).
Don’t let anyone tell you that Starr is jumping on the country bandwagon....  he sang lead vocals on the Beatles’ version of Buck Owens’s Act Naturally on the Help! album nearly 60 years ago...“There was no plan to make a country record,” says Starr.... “[T-Bone Burnett] sent me this beautiful country track....” The song was Come Back, a splendidly old-fashioned lullaby in the style of “Singing Cowboy” Gene Autry, complete with Starr whistling....
The album was also a full-circle moment for an artist whose second solo album, Beaucoups of Blues in 1970, was an arch-traditional country record, cut in two days with the American producer and pedal steel player Pete Drake.
“Pete realised I liked country music and said, ‘You should come to Nashville and make a record.’ I said, ‘I don’t want to go anywhere for two months.’ And he said, ‘What are you talking about? Bob Dylan’s Nashville Skyline was made in two days.’ I thought, ‘I can handle that.’”
You can play the new album at Spotify, here. (You can play the old one too, of course — here's "Beaucoups of Blues.")

And here's the "Look Up" video:

And, for the really great old times, here's "Act Naturally":

And here's Buck Owens in 1966:

BONUS: Here's Buck Owens doing "Lady Madonna."

Not my cup of tea, but you gotta be inspired by his desire to keep doing what he loves.

I don’t know what it is, but it’s not really country. But it’s great that he’s still making music.

Buck Owens’ “Act Naturally” is a gem.

I’m not a huge country music fan but enjoyed this album. Listened to it Sunday morning while drinking my coffee. Later that day hiked a new (to me) trail on a beautiful Central Florida winter day, looking up most of the way.

I recall an old SNL skit where Belushi, an old man, dances at the graves of the other original cast members, having outlived them all. Ringo may just accomplish that feat.

I'd tell Ringo not to quit his day job, but he doesn't have one.

Buck Owens once remarked that when he met the Beatles in the mid-60s he was surprised to learn how they all loved his music and ordered every new album when it came out.
In the early to mid-60s, the Bakersfield Sound, which he pioneered, was definitely cutting-edge and different from the Nashville Sound which had taken over the industry.

I guess Ringo is the last living Beatle. Paul looks like he's already been put into deep freeze or pickled for preservation.

In a world full of fake bullshit, it's good to still have Ringo around.

They play both kinds of music, country and western!

I used to (have to) watch Buck Owens and Roy Clark on Hee Haw (my dad was from Alabama). Never cared much for any of it m'self, although in recent years I've discovered that Clark was a magnificent guitarist. Check out his appearance on The Odd Couple.

Have also changed my opinion of Ringo the last few years. (Sort of) I always thought he was a . . . well, mediocre drummer. Or at least a barely sufficient one. That seemed to be a common thought, like he was along for the ride because no one paid attention to the drummer anyway. I now gather that he was the only one of the four that was already a working musician when they got together. I don't know. He seems more in the mold of a Charlie Watts sort of drummer, and I tend to gravitate more towards prog rockers.

I remember Ringo as the drummer for the Beatles. My sons (late thirties and early forties) remember him as the Conductor on “Thomas the Tank Engine.”

"not really country"? Three of the five people/bands he plays with - the three I'd ever heard of - are bluegrass, not country, in fact some of the best bluegrass in the world: Molly Tuttle, Billy Strings, and Alison Krauss. Wikipedia tells me the other two are either "roots rock" (Larkin Poe) or "indie pop" (Lucius), which complicates things a bit.

And yes, tickets are on sale for Ringo's latest tour. Amazing

Paul was the Corporate Beatle/Mommy Beatle. George was the Musical Beatle/Happiest Making Music With his Friends Beatle. John was the Introspectve/I'm Gonna Do This If It Kills Me Beatle.
Ringo was the Holy Shit, I Woke Up One Morning and I Was a BEATLE/Enjoy It and Don't Rock the Boat Beatle.

IMO...

Uplifting post on a Monday morning.

Whenever I read anything about the man, the only way I could ever describe him is absolutely charming.

I always felt Ringo was underrated as a drummer. Ringo does not play the drums, he actually plays the song... and that’s his genius.

Someone once told me that Ringo was the secret to the Beatles' success. As the only normal human being in the band, he was the only one who could get along with the other three and (absolutely crucial) help them get along with each other for a lot longer than they would have without him. Seemed plausible.
