At the Friday Night Café...

... you can talk about whatever you want.

Still no sunrise photo. Again: Sorry. I'm still taking care of this cold.

There is one more day in what the Blogger sidebar regards as 2024, and the post count is up to 2994. Only 6 posts needed to hit 3,000. That will make it 17 years in a row that I've had at least 3,000 posts. The posts are counted by weeks, beginning on Sunday, so the year doesn't begin with January 1. For 2024, the sidebar count began on January 7, the first Sunday in January. The posts from the first 6 days of the actual year were added to the total for 2023. So this is all on the up and up.

I didn’t make the rule. I’ve just been observing the numbers that Blogger puts in the sidebar. It was only this year that I noticed how they start counting on a Sunday and proceed by week going 52 weeks to make a year.If I wanted to know the count from the actual year, I would have to do some elaborate, counting and calculation myself.

My wife has had some sinus and lung crud for more than a week, and it seems to be getting worse. I think she's paying for all the safe and effective vaccines she took on, but dare not suggest it for the sake of domestic tranquility.

Or, it could be a bad cold. Knock on wood, I seem to be immune.

I'm going to go check the skies--I don't expect drones, or Chinese spacejunk fireballs, but the crescent moon is near to Venus, and Jupiter and Mars should stand out if it's clear.

I see that Saturn is close to Luna and Venus, but I don't think it ever shows through the light pollution around here.

Never mind, I found them. There are 50 of them.

Tips to help Althouse reach 3000 hits

A list post. I can’t think of a list that would not be boring.

But MAGA commenters on Althouse told me this was a terrorist attack by ISIS.

“This was not a terrorist attack,” the notes said. “It was a wake-up call. Americans only pay attention to spectacles and violence. What better way to get my point across than a stunt with fireworks and explosives?”

“Why did I personally do it now? I needed to cleanse my mind of the brothers I’ve lost and relieve myself of the burden of the lives I took,” Sergeant Livelsberger said in one of the notes, according to the police.

It was being reported the Cybertruck explosion outside a Trump hotel in Las Vegas was caused deliberately by incendiary devices. But what does it say about Tesla that’s so many people initially believed it was just because Cybertrucks are poorly built and designed?

In 2023, Tesla Was The Most-Recalled Car Brand — By Far — Of All Cars, Trucks, And SUVs.

Maybe Tesla quality might improve if Elon spent more time on it instead of toilet-tweeting throughout the day.

I cannot help but find it humorous that a law professor is going to argue that 2024 ends not on December 31st, but instead ends 4 whole days later. I’m reminded of a case where a government contractor agreed to demonstrate something — I forget what, maybe a new aircraft — on or before the last day of the year. But they missed their deadline by a day through no fault of the contractor, so the government certified that the test succeeded on “December 32.”

James K said...

For what it's worth, a calendar year is 52 weeks and one or two days. So most years you are short one or two days, then once every few years you get an extra 6 or 7 days. 2023 was one of those--it began on a Sunday and ended on a Sunday, so you got an extra week.

I read that the latest Gallup poll shows that just 31% of Americans trust the media to report “fully, accurately, and fairly.”

I’m amazed that it’s that high. As far as I’m concerned this Gallup poll proves that 31% of the US population is certifiably insane.

I may have missed the background on this but how did that video of the NO terrorist’s truck turning onto Bourbon St come to be? Was someone tracking and filming it in particular, or was the video cobbled together from various other videos?

My money is a psychotic break due to the guilt of the war crime of involvement in the killing of hundreds of civilians when they should have called off the air strike, which led his wife to dump him, and led him to have paranoid delusions about Chinese anti-gravity drones. Given what we know now.

Oh, and it's pretty rich, get it? to have a commenter who supported a senile old war mongering fool for re-election lecture us on getting something wrong in early speculation about an event. It seems like it was a coincidence that two electric trucks were used rented from the same service on the same day. I think he chose the truck thinking that if he could set the battery on fire, it would burn for a long time.

Feel free to throw it in my face in the future if the facts go another way as if I was claiming it to be a lead pipe certainty.

Probably Saturn, depending on the time the photo was taken. Saturn is easily a naked eye object. You've got some serious light pollution if you can't see Saturn.

What air strike are you referring to?

A year is 52 weeks. 365 days. As long as the posts fall within those parameters, the stop date is irrelevant.

Air strikes the Las Vegas suicide claimed he'd participated in that allegedly killed civilians. Were they as imaginary as the anti-gravity sub-launched drones over New Jersey? Here's Jack Posobiec on Twitter (link): "Spoke with an Army friend who served with Matthew Livelsberger in Afghanistan, says the email story about war crimes in 2019 is totally made up, that they didn’t even have strike authority like he’s talking about".

But some times (presumably about every seven years) there are 53 weeks. This results in a recognized alternative for annual accountings, called the 52-53 week year method.

Ref Kommie’s pledge: I’ll give her a break. I frequently see priests mess up a 500-year-old liturgy that they’ve been saying multiple times a week for years. Sometimes we just trip over ourselves. The chances are probably higher when it is a liturgical recitation - either religious or secular - because you go on autopilot. But then you lapse back into consciousness and the handover from the autopilot doesn’t go smoothly.

You would think the Senate staff would have made a laminated cheat card for the podium by now, though.

Nothing. It says nothing whatsoever about Tesla.

Maybe Tesla was the most recalled car brand, but it is on the cutting edge of technology and by far the highest selling brand among its competitors. So it’s hardly a surprise that it sees more recalls.

This guy needs to go.Would any other perp be given all these passes? This guys is prime example of hanging with trump will do for ya.Trump’s former lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, appeared in a New York court on Friday (Jan. 3) for a hearing to determine if he will be found in contempt of court for ignoring court orders.
For months, Giuliani has stalled in turning over assets that would satisfy Ruby Freeman and her daughter Shaye Moss’ $146 million defamation judgment against him. In 2021, the Georgia poll workers sued Giuliani for ruining their reputations.
Giuliani repeated the lie that a surveillance video showed the women hiding and counting suitcases filled with illegal ballots at a basketball arena in Atlanta that was used to process votes during the 2020 election.
Two years later, Giuliani admitted that the comments he made were untrue. This led to a judge ruling that he was liable for defamation as a sanction against Giuliani for failing to turn over electronic records to Moss and Freeman.
A Washington, D.C., jury ultimately ordered he pay the pair nearly $73 million in compensation and an additional $75 million as punishment.
During the hearing, Aaron Nathan—the attorney for Freeman and Moss—stated that Giuliani had stonewalled their requests for information in a case over how he will pay a $148 million defamation award.
He also encouraged U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman to hold former the New York City mayor in civil contempt.: Judge to decide whether to hole Giuliani in contempt of court (FOX 5 New York)
Judge to decide whether to hole Giuliani in contempt of court
[Giuliani] willfully refused to search for and produce documents that would have been responsive to the plaintiffs’ request for production,” Nathan explained in Manhattan federal court per Reuters.
Nathan also told Liman that Giuliani had failed to send them documents that would have helped them figure out whether he must surrender a Palm Beach, Florida, condominium he owns.
However, Giuliani fired back that his life has been wholly interrupted by the election workers and that he has not “willfully disobeyed” any court orders. He also said he relied on his former lawyers in the case to handle requests from Freeman and Moss.
Though Giuliani’s fate is still undecided, he has been disbarred for making false claims about the 2020 election. He pleaded not guilty to criminal charges in Arizona and Georgia that he helped Trump’s failed attempt to overturn his defeat. They all eventually go down except the Main perp who they ar emaking King in couple weeks. How many other lawyers of trumps lost their ability to practice because of blatant lies. The King says off with their heads.
