Surprised no one has compared the Carter post-presidency with that of Clinton and Obama. Jimmy went off to build homes for the poor, while Bill and Barack went on a furious cash grab hoovering up every penny possible from corporate interests.
Saw the Dylan movie last week. I'm not a Dylan fan (find his voice grating.) I was a young child when all this folk movement/rock and roll stuff was happening, so it wasn't on my radar, but I really enjoyed the movie. It was a wonderful depiction of a young artist coming into his own, a story of someone who loves music and how loves performing music and is driven to create. I highly recommend it.
"Looks like we're approaching that day of the year when the sun rises over the capital building, at least from that vantage point."
The sun is moving to the left now, so that's already happened. We like when the rising sun shines through the rotunda and looks like the place is on fire.
Only two days left to make money this year, I've had another good year trading stocks, a 50% plus gain. Hopefully tomorrow stocks will end the year even higher.
Here's a photo where the sun is shining through the capitol and the day is November 22: https://althouse.blogspot.com/2021/11/on-0-cloud-cover-morning-most.html
Orange man speak with forked tongue(is this somethin new?) MUSK has spoken and the leopards spots changed..What has Trump previously said about H-1B visas? Trump has backed his ally Elon Musk on the H-1B visa During Trump’s first administration, the H-1B visa program was restricted in 2020 over concerns it allowed employers to replace American workers with lower-paid foreign workers. Now, he appears to have backtracked on that sentiment after coming out in support of Musk and Ramaswamy, who will lead the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency. Ramaswamy argued that America does “not produce the best engineers,” while Musk said that there is “a permanent shortage of excellent engineering talent” in the U.S. trump. I’ve always liked the visas, I have always been in favor of the visas. That’s why we have them, he said. In a 2016 primary debate, however, Trump called the H-1B visa program very bad and unfair for U.S. workers. First of all, I think and I know the H-1B very well. And it’s something that I frankly use and I shouldn’t be allowed to use it. We shouldn’t have it,” he said. “Second of all, I think it’s very important to say, well, I’m a businessman and I have to do what I have to do.” Orange man always speak with forked tongue..musk too much $$$ to disagree with and so it begins
Following up on my black-eyed peas and collard greens comment from the previous open thread a few days ago, here's a good recipe if anybody wants to give it a try on New Year's Day. I substitute canned collard greens for fresh, black-eyed peas for the field and crowder peas, add a couple of smoked ham hocks, and usually skip the vermouth. Serve over white rice with a side of cornbread. Makes the house smell great. I already have the ingredients and can't wait until Wednesday!

#2 The Darling Buds - "A Little Bit Of Heaven" - Crawdaddy - 1990
Last year, a song from the Welsh band The Darling Buds' first album, Pop Said..., made my Top 15 Songs. This year, it's this track from their second album that made the cut. I would definitely have listened to all of their catalog in 2023, but it was a one-off because I was so locked-in on Pop Said..., and was looking for more of the same, which this album really isn't. I went back in late December of last year after the deadline and listened to Crawdaddy again and said, "You know, this is a really good album!'
The Darling Buds never achieved major commercial success and are criminally underrated in my opinion. I really like the whole album, but this was the track I liked best, probably because of the syncopated rhythm. It reminded me of some of U2's songs that came out a year later on their Achtung Baby album.
Jonathan Turley @JonathanTurley President Biden is offering lessons on what presidents could learn from the late President Carter. The think to think about, as the sun rises in the SE, is that in Australia it's rising also in the SE. The winter/summer difference is that here the sun travels south for a short day, and in Australia it travels north for a long day.
I always enjoy watching the sun (and everything else) rising and setting to the left when I'm in the southern hemisphere. And when we book lodgings, it's important to remember that sun exposure is to the north.
I think Rogan is the new Rush. I liked Clay Travis better before he became more popular. Now his sports network “Outkick” is getting as bad as ESPN with the click bait stories.
Did he? "David D." (@secretsqrl123) is one of the best-informed people I follow on Twitter for Ukraine. He says the half that's actual money is all from confiscated Russian assets, and the other half is surplus vehicles, equipment, and ammunition that were paid for long ago and we were never going to use anyway. The vehicles are all lined up in long rows in the desert.
Elsewhere he has written that it actually costs less to send (e.g.) an M-1 tank or Bradley fighting vehicle to Ukraine than it would cost to dispose of while following all EPA regulations. That makes a lot of sense: recycling all the parts of an armored vehicle is undoubtedly expensive, and EPA rules are onerous. And they would have to be disposed of at some point.
When Biden says we're sending $1,000,000,000 worth of weapons, he means it would cost that much to replace, but in fact the stuff's already paid for and surplus.
Yes, David D makes his case, and there is plenty of other evidence, and plenty of other Twitterers studying the war very carefully. Russia has lost 400,000+ troops this year (killed and wounded) to capture an area the size of Luxembourg, and lost a slice of Russia to boot. And the economy is near collapse: inflation and interest rates going through the roof, exchange rate dropping, harvests crashing, airliners and locomotives falling apart, and so on. Putin is unlikely to make it through the year.

On average about 3 minutes a day.
The sun is moving to the left three minutes a day?
(sorry, my inner physics teacher couldn't help it)
Biden executed his furious cash grab while a Senator, Vice President, and President. Why wait unitl post-presidency? Slowpokes!
Headline: “Appeals court upholds $5 million E. Jean Carroll verdict against Trump“. No love lost between Trump and the courts in New York.
Another nail in their coffin. ⚰️

It's surprising how bad Rush's slot on the radio has become. It's always rants about stuff that fits right wing clickbait.
Mark Simone was okay sort of.
It needs somebody who's a prankster.

Just checked out David D’s recent posts on X. Nonstop reports of how Ukraine is kicking Russia’s butt. You believe that?
This is one of this year's best pictures.
