Actually, the story is a positive one. The politicians and imams proposing that the law be reversed to re-allow FGM have lost, and the ban on FGM remains in place. 75% of the child-bearing-age women in the Gambia have been subjected to FGM, according to the writeup. That's horrific - but now there are stories about sexual health coming into play, and there are businesses that support it. That's a big cultural turnaround, considering the aforementioned numbers. And although the 'religion of peace' is often the 'religion of pieces', there are Imams that are speaking up for moderation, and for women, which is also a big thing.

Islam and other religious ideologies often fight the body and natural tendencies -- see "carnal knowledge" and "sins of the flesh" in Roman Catholic and Protestant teaching. @Readering, perusing the top returns from Google indicates it is still quite common though the percentage has been declining. It appears to have peaked during the 1960s when over 80% of males born in the US were circumcised before leaving the hospital but the number has declined to around 60% now.

four types of FGM: not mentioned: the type three procedure that eliminates most of the external genitals and results in perineal scars that complicate childbirth.
Type one is a simple slit practiced in Indonesia and does not.
And no this predates Islam: The prophet when asked merely suggested to "cut a little"', knowing he could not stop this custom.
FGM is not equivalent to circumcision which predates Judism in Egypt. If you have ever seen balanitis, phimosis, paraphimosis or cancer you might recognize it is a health practice in dry climates. By the way: it also lowers the rate of HIV. Do you want the technical reason? Not just Jewish: Islam does it at puberty, and in the Philippines, the boys have it done at puberty even though we've been Catholic for a couple hundred years.
