"Polls suggest that several of Mr. Biden’s core constituencies — young people, Black people and Hispanics — are increasingly Trump-curious."

"In a Wall Street Journal poll of swing states, 30 percent of Black men said they would definitely or probably vote for Mr. Trump. For the disaffected, Mr. Trump offers the promise of radical change. In [a recent New York Times-Siena College survey], these 'tear-it-down' voters — some 15 percent of registered voters — prefer Mr. Trump by 32 percentage points.... 'The polling data has been wrong all along,' [President Biden] said in an interview.... Rejecting the polls — relying instead on anecdotes, instincts and vibes — is political malpractice.... ... Mr. Biden should assume [the polls] are right — and act accordingly."

From "Biden should assume the polls are right, not wrong" by the Editorial Board of The Washington Post.

Exactly how does one "act accordingly"? Just because Biden says the polls are wrong doesn't mean he believes they are wrong. One way to act as if the polls are right is to assert that they are wrong.

The Biden campaign accused Trump of pandering and empty promises, emphasizing his history of demeaning Black communities.

“Donald Trump has the nerve to waltz into our city and act like he wants to understand the struggles Black Detroiters face, but the reality is he doesn’t care,” Pastor James Perkins of Detroit’s Greater Christ Baptist Church said in a statement. “Every time Trump opens his mouth to talk to Black folks, he demonizes us, insults us, and makes empty promises he’ll never keep.”

IN THE COMMENTS: A propos of WaPo's "Trump-curious" coinage, Dave Begley says:

I am Curious, Orange.

It seems that Pastor Perkins is suffering from the same confusion as Rich. Pastor, Trump is the orange one. Biden is the one who demonizes (remember the"jungle" thing?) and insults (remember the "clean and articulate" thing?) black Americans, and makes empty promises to them that he'll never keep.

Everyone wants to offer Biden advice on how to be successful.
And yet he steadfastly turns his back on them.
It’s an indicator of how truly senile he is.
He cares about proving he can win the presidency with no help.
Deep down he knows his 2020 election was tainted with voting irregularities.
Trump on the other hand is beaten down every single day.
No one offers him advice on success, and yet he continues to be a strong competitor.
It’s an indicator of how truly in touch with reality he his.

30% of black men voting Republican means the total collapse of the Rat coalition. Which totally vindicates purging the Republican party of the chuckservative LLR types, who are not just stupid but far too ineffective to possibly matter.

So let's review:
Blacks: see above
Muslims: ready to protest over the Gaza war
Indians: annoyed by Biden's hostility to their country.
"Asians:" increasingly wary about crime and filthy streets

SWPL liberals aren't going to be remotely enough to save this. And the "war effort" can't handle a second try of overt vote fraud.

Oh, he understands all too well what’s been going on. Black Detroiters — inner city blacks everywhere — have been set up to fail by a Democrat Party that figures (so far mostly correctly) that keeping inner city blacks impoverished is the easiest way to keep them on the plantation.

“Every time Trump opens his mouth to talk to Black folks, he demonizes us, insults us, and makes empty promises he’ll never keep.”

A sprawling network of Democratic officials, progressive activists, watchdog groups and ex-Republicans has been taking extraordinary steps to prepare for a potential second Trump presidency, drawn together by the fear that Mr. Trump’s return to power would pose a grave threat not just to their agenda but to American democracy itself."

The left has a plan to counter the minority communities moving towards Trump. On July 11th, Merchan will sentence Trump on his 34 felony charges. Merchan will be generous given Trump is officially a first-time offender although the judge will probably bring up Trump's checkered past and other unindicted crimes, especially the crime of besting HRC in 2016.

But in his generosity, Merchan will only sentence Trump to three months --- per count. That will be a total of only 8 1/2 years in prison. Trump will be immediately taken into custody and off the campaign trail. Blue states will then seek to remove Trump from the ballot in their states and CNN and MSNBC will immediate intone "No One Is Above the Law". Biden will agree as he signs the paperwork pardoning his son and at long last our nation will return to regular order and normality.

The Democrat/Barbarian Party keeps the poor, Black community crime-ridden. The Barbarians in the WA 45th and 48th legislative districts (Redmond, home of Microsoft; Bellevue home of Amazon and adjacent to Redmond) are anti-cop and pro-criminal. They voted to reduce criminal penalties and curtail police pursuits. They don't care about keeping the Black communities safe, they vote this way because the AWFLs want them to vote for criminals; the AWFLs get to feel good about protecting the Black criminals.

"“Look, the crime is most rampant right here and in African American communities,” Trump said at 180 Church in Detroit. “More people see me and they say, ‘Sir, we want protection. We want police to protect us. We don’t want to get robbed and mugged and beat up or killed because we want to walk across the street to buy a loaf of bread.’”
The audience, which was not predominantly Black, cheered at the remark. He returned to the topic of crime when asked how he would address Black entrepreneurship. “The biggest thing we can do is stop the crime,” he said."

That means he wasn't "demeaning" just b/Blacks.

There is story-beat in one of the earlier seasons of the Sopranos involving protestors at a construction site. The protestors, who are mostly black, are protesting and blocking the construction site saying the Union is excluding black folks from it's hiring. The protestors are being led by a black pastor or civil rights leader. The protest and blockage is preventing the work from being done which upsets the Property Owner, or Project Manager, or Union leader or whoever is overseeing the project. He reaches out to Tony Soprano to end the work stoppage. Tony says he'll do it but it will cost him. So Tony gets paid and sends a bunch of wise guys over to the site and utilizing the persuasive properties of clubs and baseball bats they get protestors to leave the area. At the end of the episode you see Tony meet up with the black protest leader and he gives him a wad of cash for playing his role creating the work stoppage.

In the end none of the protestors got any jobs and many even got beaten up. Also, the person in charge of getting the work done had to pay through the nose just to be able to finish the job. There are lots of civic leaders/union leaders/political activists who portray themselves as fighting for a particular group of people or cause but privately benefit greatly from the status quo and their constituents being unsatisfied. I suspect the good Pastor might be such a person.

Black leaders, black artists, conservative journalists and Republican politicians and presidential candidates are picked by the same people.

The only difference between them is who they are picked to lie to.

And all of the sturm and drang you see here is because Trump actually means what he says and does what he promises to do.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

So he pointed out the obvious. Democrats like to feed us partial truths like black Americans suffer from crime more than whites in suburbs, and then insinuate that the cause is racism and white supremacy. Trump just cuts to the quick and says the truth that most the victims of black crimes are black people and we need to lock up the perpetrators to bring crime down in your neighborhood.

Of course the media tries to spin it but the people appreciate the unvarnished truth.

imTay said...

If the people at the WaPo writing that stuff knew any ordinary black people, they would know that what Trump is saying about their neighborhoods is accurate, and that many, many black people are angry that white liberals think that living with crime is the only way to be authentically black.

So since Althouse is suggesting this story as a possible bright spot for the Trump campaign, I feel like it is important, and incumbent on me, to point out the negative.

Trump's history with "Detroit" is fraught at best. Trump is nibbling around the edges of Detroit voting. Trump got about 3% of the Detroit vote in 2016, and about 5% of the Detroit vote in 2020. Arguably, Trump has been doing "better" in Detroit while he has been doing significantly poorer in Oakland County, Kent County and the Grosse Pointes by much larger numbers.

It's amazing that anybody in Detroit takes Trump seriously at all. Trump has regularly claimed, falsely, that in 2020, "there were more votes than voters" in Detroit, which he called "corrupt." Not one of the Detroit elected leaders deigned to appear at Trump's church roundtable. I'm a lifelong metro-Detroiter and no one I know had ever heard of the "180 Church" or its pastor before the last two weeks. The only characters who showed up were GOP functionaries; Dr. Ben Carson, Rep. John James, former Detroit Police Chief James Craig (who is, truly, the biggest joke in Michigan electoral politics these days; you gotta do your own lookup on that guy). A really great question would be to ask "Chief Craig" what he thinks of Trump's countless trashtalk allegations of Detroit having been lawless and corrupt while he was chief.

But I don't think that there was anything like that at this campaign-cultivated event. Kellyanne Conway falsely claimed that the event was "8,000 people at a black church." In fact, the church seemed to have some empty seats and the crowd was absolutely nothing like one of Detroit's major black churches. It was at least an 80% white crowd.

On the same day that Trump was blabbering abojut "rampant crime" in Detroit, there were two mass shootings in the area, neither one in Detroit. One was in suburban Rochester, the other in suburban Southfield.

Trump might be fooling some Detroit voters, but not many. Not nearly as many as the educated suburban voters, and many women, who would normally favor Republicans but who won't vote for Trump. Trump won Michigan by about 10,700 votes in 2016. (Including, regrettably, my vote.) Trump lost Michigan by about 154,000 votes in 2020. (Including, happily, my vote.) I expect that Trump will lose Michigan by more than 150,000 in 2024. I hope Trump keeps workin' it. I want Trunmp to waste resources in Michigan; to try really hard, and get beaten soundly.
