Many might say that it's being a nation that trusts women that got us here.

There's not only social responsibility - women get the benefits of society and can in effect be drafted to produce the next generation, as part of the deal, just a men (used to) be drafted - but there's a vocal lobby for fetus souls that - furthermore - makes them full human beings. That's two why's.

Once upon a time, the abortion advocates caste their rhetoric in sad necessity. Now they attempt to cloak it in "morality," a lovely death dealing morality. The paganization of our world continues apace, cloaked in rights rhetoric masking primordial cruelty.

God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah and I hope he is no more kindly to us.

What does it mean to say we trust women? Harris sounds sexist. Women can make bad decision, be uninformed or unreliable, just like everyone else.

The Covid situation showed us that the government is very willing to tell us what can be done with or to our bodies.

It's not a decision only about the woman's "own body". It also involves the life of the unborn child. If you want your argument to be taken seriously, you have to deal with that life, too. Of course, we don't expect Kamala Harris to make serious arguments about anything.

Slaughtering unborn babies is not immoral, eh, Kamala.

At least one good thing has come out of the tranny hoorah.

Now president (of the senate for now) Harris talks about"an individual's" right to make decisions about "their" own body.

I've been complaining about this for 20-30 years. Adult Men have the same pretty absolute to bodily autonomy as adult women. Or should.

If a wants to chop off her breasts and pretend to be a man, fine by me. If a man wants to chop off his, that's cool to.

I think both are nuts but their bodies, their choice. Live and let live, none of my business

Once that fetus becomes a person whether at conception, at birth or somewhere in between, it ceases to be the woman's body. it is deserving of protection.

And I don't know for certain when personhood occurs.

Then why does the FDA get to tell me what drugs to take? Or keep me from buying unpasteurized milk? The government only lets me choose when they want me to choose, otherwise they would not have the fun of telling me what to do.

Everyone needs to be fully informed in order to make good decisions.
Women need to understand the economic consequence to themselves of having no children - namely, that they will be poor in their old age because the welfare state needs a next generation to survive. No children, no Social Security or Medicaid. Or to be more exact, when 35% of women in the present cohort (the present group of women 44 years old) have no children or only one child, the old age programs, social Security and Medicaid won't survive into the old age of that cohort. Be informed.

And women need to understand that abortion can scar the womb and does so disproportionately in the case of black women, Then, when these women are ready to have children their womb is no longer ready.

And women need to understand that the humanity of the unborn child is becoming clearer and clearer due to ultrasound scans and advances in embryology. At any moment a woman who thought she was aborting formless jelly may suddenly see an ultrasound or read an article and realize how false an understanding she had of her unborn child. Too late for anything but a terrible regret. Better to realize in time that you are carrying a child, your own child, and act on that assumption.

Women are being told to think of just one person, themselves, at just one moment, the moment when they first hear of an unexpected pregnancy. Thinking solely of yourself and acting on the first thought that comes into your mind when you are suddenly frightened - is that the way to good outcome in an emergency?

The Court only decided that it was not a federal constitutional issue.

There are still federal statutes (subject to constitutional challenges). It might be better to leave it to the states, but that only happens if Congress restrains itself.

Ann Althouse said...

There's some room to make constitutional challenges to federal statutes.

Great point, Kamala. (Not really--there are very real competing human interests involved).

Now make the same point regarding every other aspect of American life in which those same elected officials assume the same rights to make decisions about what is in our best interests--as individuals, as parents, as business owners and operators, as consumers, as purveyors of information, as expressors of opinions...(I could go on for a long time).

If your life revolves around getting abortions - move to a state that allows abortion.
Or - Get your state to change the laws in favor of allowing abortion.
Or - move to Colorado - where you can abort/kill your baby on month 9 - time of birth.

This is no longer a federal issue.

Sad- that this topic is all the left have. well - they do have lies to sell.

btw- Kamala raised money for BLM and White Left antifa arsonists - and campaigned for money to help pay their legal bills and get them freed from any jail time.

Back in the antebellum era, Democrats went through the same rhetorical evolution vis-a-vis slavery: what they once described as a regrettable institution became for them a positive social good.

Slavery, Indian Removal, Segregation, Jim Crow, Internment Camps, Abortion. If Democrats don't like certain groups, they enact and enforce policies for that.

Then shit or get off the pot. Codify abortion at 16 weeks at the federal level. Democrats admire Europe, right? Don't they want to be them?

Americans would meet in the middle. Trump knows it. He's stated it.

Harris is just appealing to the emotion of "our body". Third trimester is infanticide. There should be reasonable restrictions.

If you're pregnant and don't want the baby, figure it out in the first 16 weeks. Again...shit or get off the pot.

Personhood has nothing to do with it.

Past the moment of conception, there are only two ways to die: some natural cause, or homicide.

Abortion, because it ends that life before a natural cause, is inescapably homicide. A very small proportion of abortions are to avoid the mother’s injury or death: justifiable self defense.

All the rest are premeditated murders of convenience.

The ONLY person involved in an abortion is the woman getting it.
That is: as long as she IS the only person involved.

The woman is not the only party with an interest here. The fetus has probably even a more compelling interest - to live. Allowing unfettered abortion means giving the desire of the fetus to live no credit. That is one purpose of a democracy - to determine the line here between giving the woman complete control of her body, to prioritizing the fetus’s right and desire to live over her control over her body. Appropriately, different trade offs have been made by different legislatures around the country. This is no different from drawing the line between 1st degree murder, 2nd degree, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary, etc, or even the limits of self defense. It’s the line between murder and justified killing.

Bruce Hayden said...

Of course, here, the ModRNA COVID-19 vaccines did no such thing, and, indeed may have harmed other people through reducing the ability of those vaxed to properly develop natural immunities to the virus.

Where Republicans of both sexes get this wrong is allowing this claptrap to pass without nailing comments like this with reminders about decided law. The Supreme Court has put it back to the states. The states will decide, and are deciding. The VP's point of view is irrelevant, and should be called out as that.

Where Republicans royally step on their dick, is when they start making stupid pronouncements, like tabling legislation to go after women that travel out of state for abortion services. Nobody likes that kind of rat - nobody votes for that kind of rat, either. That kind of behavior outrages every reasonable voter that would participate in supporting abortion controls in a state referendum - whatever they might be. Because it is wasting the time of the legislature, time that is better spent on issues that are far more important, than targeting people that are already miserable.

Todd said...

Yes, her body, her choice. Though technically, a "fetus" is not "her body" (it is of her and another's body), it is a different "body" that happens to have her body wrapped around it for about 9 months.

Once her actions [which can have a 98% (or better) chance of prevention] result in "her body" being wrapped around another body, additional responsibilities of what she can be permitted to do with her body are applied by society.

I still find it "amusing" that today the states can force a "man" to financially support a child and sometimes the woman that birthed them for around 18 years despite him not wanting to. In some cases he can even legally and medically prove he is not the co-creator of the child but still, he pays. The state says some "man" must pay, he is there, he got "caught" so he pays. He may not even be able to get any visitation. The "mother" can also move the child to another state effectively eliminating his option to visit, but anything/all-things are good, she is the mother! In the end he is completely at the mercy of her and the courts. He never has the option to "end it".

According to this crowd, it is right and dandy that the woman has ALL the options and the man has none cause "patriarchy" or something. Her body, her choice.

[Nearly always] (a) she choose to have sex with a man, (b) unprotected, (c) without the use of an IUD or other form of preventative birth control and (d) without insisting that her partner use birth control. Her body, her choice.

When these actions result in a not entirely unexpected pregnancy, one might could argue that it was a "foreseeable consequence" of the actions taken. The consequence of course being her body wrapped around that of another for around 9 months.

All that said, could there be a dumber or more dishonest VP ever (excluding her immediate boss of course) in that she should darn well know that women still have the option to eliminate the "other" that their body is wrapped around, in the vast majority of states (if not every state for however a brief period of time)? It is just no longer a federal right as previously determined by a few black robed individuals reading the entrails of sacrificed goats.

If the Democrat Party ever quit telling us all "what we need", and trying to enforce it with coercive, intrusive legislation, they'd have to fold their tent.
