"Kristi Noem and Vivek Ramaswamy Are CPAC’s Choices for Trump’s Running Mate."

 The NYT reports.

Of course, Trump won the straw poll for President. It was 95% to 5%.

I watched most of Trump's speech to CPAC. You can watch here (start at 1:59:00):

UPDATE, 6:48 pm CST: Trump is about to make his victory speech in South Carolina.

Election 2024 uniquely requires a spare nominee. If Trump ends up in jail or disqualified Nikki Haley could end up in the WH.

Can you imagine a reasonable person watching a speech from any politician, much less Trump?

If you don’t watch any candidate’s speeches or town halls, you’re not adequately informed to voice an opinion or to vote. MSM is not honest. We all must do our own research. Don’t believe the middlepeople.

One of the other very resonant things about listening to the Rest is History podcast series on the rise of the Nazis is how much they were abetted and encouraged by “traditional conservatives” who thought they were of use and that their energy could be directed to policy goals. Nazis and other weirdos like the John Birch Society and various militia groups have had a presence at CPAC for decades, but they were relegated to the outside venues before. Now they’re right in there, hanging out with the modern GOP.

Somehow, NBCs article, which claims the Nazis were out in the open and eager to talk to the press, is devoid of any pictures or videos of said Nazis.

How can we be "adequately informed to voice an opinion or to vote" (sic)if we don't hear this:

"A vote for Trump is your ticket back to freedom. It's your passport out of tyranny, and it's your only escape from Joe Biden and his gang's fast track to hell," Trump said. "And in many ways we're living in hell right now."

I find it interesting that Nazi now means anti-communist. This came out in the open in 2020 with the resurgence of AntiFA - originally the communist front organization, funded and run by the Soviets, to vie with the Nazis on the streets of Germany for the heart and soul of German socialism. We had more sympathy for German style national socialism than Soviet style communism, until Germany declared war on the US, right after Pearl Harbor. In any case, modern AntiFA gave up the game, when they started decorating their helmets and ballistic shields with the communist Hammar and Sickle, along with their historic AntiFA symbol.

In any case, what is interesting in the Ukrainian war is that underneath is the same German/Russian fight, dating back to that time, if not earlier. Yes, there are Nazi sympathizers, but they can probably better be viewed as pro-German, ant-Russian partisans, using their Nazi sympathies to highlight their loyalties.

Today, in the US, “Nazi” has taken a similar, but maybe more fundamental, meaning - anti-communist, but now more anti-Maoist than anti-Leninist communism. The left, more and more, calls their enemies “Nazis”, regardless of, or even despite, their targets true feelings. It’s a quick and dirty way for them to smear their enemies as being totally loathsome people. The reality of course, is that there is little sympathy for the sort of German national corporate socialism preached by the Nazis - just more than the state owned economy pushed by the communists. Both are very much disliked by the Right. And the truth is that the communists murdered an order of magnitude more people than the Nazis ever did throughout the 20th Century.

So, yes, I know that pretty much every time I hear about someone on the right being tarred as a Nazi, I know that I am dealing with a pro-communist leftist. It says more about the speaker, than the object of his condemnation.

Unlikely, because she has alienated many of the MAGA Republicans. Enough of them will stay home, that she wouldn’t be elected, if nominated. Trump is a populist, and she is not. And that is his real strength - speaking to the middle. Something that she cannot do. She is GOPe, disdained by the MAGA arm of the party. What is becoming ever more evident is that MAGA in general, and Trump in particular, are fairly effectively eroding the Dems’ traditional base. They have already lost significant support since 2020 with Hispanics (maybe, surprisingly, involving illegal immigration). But more surprisingly, among Blacks, and esp Black men. There is even some movement towards Trump by more religious Jews, based on the FJB Administration on Palestinian atrocities. These traditional Dem constituencies aren’t going to vote for the GOPe.

Trump being unable to run is utterly foreseeable. That doesn’t mean it will or won’t happen but it is a predictable outcome. Which is of course why Haley still is being given money, Wall Streeters get optionality. Haley is an insurance policy for all the reasons identified. Politicians in the US are bought, but bought cheaply. Someone is buying an option on that black swan event which is unlikely to pay out. But if it does? That’s some payday!

(IMO -- Elise Stefanik is very likely to become Trump's choice for VP.)

A few very loud leftist keep screaming that Trump is a self centered and only cares about what is best for Trump. That of course is universal for all politicians
But. . . right now the best thing for Trump is winning a big swing state with lots of Electoral votes.
Make that list and cross match it with his list.

Steffanic is great, but she will not deliver NY
Noem is better but S Dakota is already in the bank.
Vivek delivers Ohio. Watching that, Art of Deal, being made would be epic. But Vivek brings zero experience in DC influence peddling.

No. Wendy, my dear. No he is not. He's very bad at it. He is Dunning-Kruger on steroids. He doesn't think you're dumb. He thinks he's smart. That we, on this blog, cannot have any serious dialog without his input. It is the hubris of the left.
He is a very short person intellectually and all the low hanging fruit is gone.

Richie, please provide us poor deplorables your odds on whether Trump will be "unable to run". When you're done, think about this: given that Trump is cleaning Nikki's clock with all the lawfare against him, as well as the infinitesimally small chance he will not be the nominee regardless of whether he goes to trial before the election, tell us how Trumpers will agree to Nikki becoming the GOPe's insurance policy. The fact is that the longer she persists in her fool's errand, the less likely she'll be any part of Trump's second administration. You wouldn't by any chance be a FJB strategist, would you, or just another Bulwark-style never-Trump dreamer?

It’s just wrong to treat mainstream conservatives at CPAC as if they support the Nazis hanging out with them, when they clearly in theory disagree with them on some issues and would say so if it were politically expedient. Potential Trump VP—Elise Stefanik was very concerned about incidents of student anti-Semitism on Harvard’s campus, so it’d be great if someone asked her why she proudly gave a speech to an audience with literal Nazis in it.

Rich said...

Upon further reflection— it doesn't matter if Stefanik or other GOP politicians condemn the Nazis. That low bar that lets them off the hook. The questions to ask: Why do Nazis feel at home in the GOP? Which polices do they support? Are those policies also supported by GOP politicians and their voters?
