"When Trump was president I started every morning by reading the New York Times, followed by the Washington Post, and would track both papers’ websites..."

"... regularly throughout the day. To be less than vigilant was to fall behind.... My friend Mike likened this constant monitoring to having a second job. It was exhausting, and the moment that Biden was sworn in to office I let it all go. When the new president speaks, I feel the way I do on a plane when the pilot announces that after reaching our cruising altitude he will head due north, or take a left at Lake Erie. You don’t need to tell me about your job, I always think. Just, you know, do it. It’s so freeing, no longer listening to political podcasts—no longer being enraged...."

Wrote David Sedaris, in "Happy-Go-Lucky," which came out in 2022 (I earn a commission through that link).

I recalled that passage as I was listening to Monday's NYT "Daily" podcast, "Swing State Voters Are Souring on Biden/A new Times/Siena poll finds Donald Trump leading President Biden in five of six key battlegrounds."

Nate Cohen: Back when Donald Trump was doing poorly among [black and Hispanic people], it was like there was a controversial or racist remark in the news every week, right?... And that hasn’t been true for a while. And I think that can be an important part of why he’s able to make gains among these voting blocs when he hasn’t done so in the past.... In 2016, he was offensive to both Black and Latino voters and did terribly among both. In 2020, he still campaigned against immigration, but it was no longer the focus of that election — Black Lives Matter, defund the police was. He does way better among Latino voters while still struggling among Black voters....
Michael Barbaro: [T]hat could amount to a realignment between the parties...
Nate Cohen: I mean, this is a dissatisfied, disaffected, disengaged electorate that doesn’t like their choices. These are the textbook conditions for political volatility. It’s also the conditions for political upheaval, right? This is when realigning elections happen....

One might say, perhaps, that people were hyper-vigilant when Trump was President and that Biden seemed to offer a chance to disengage.

Meade said to me yesterday morning that he'd been imagining a lot of disengaged people who'd go along with the vague idea I think Biden has done a good job.

We were talking about that later in the day as we were out walking the lake path. In the course of our discussion of what's going on with the distanced and disengaged American public, Meade happened to say those words out loud — "I think Biden has done good job"just as a man and a woman were passing us. The woman — who'd heard the line out of context — said, "I agree!"

Cohen is lying. In 2016, Trump did about as well among Hispanic/black voters as the other 21st century Republican candidates have. In 2020, he did BETTER than any other Republican POTUS candidate.

And why lump hispanics and blacks together? blacks vote D 85-95 percent in EVERY POTUS election. No matter what. And have for 50 years.

Hispanics are different. And Trump did about as well in 2016 as Bush, McCain or Romney and improved his standing in 2020. The lowpoint for R's with Hispanics came in 2012 with Mittens, who turned off Latinos.

Trump punching back at women in public caused many women to turn him off immediately. It didn't matter if they agreed with his policies, he was "rude" and "mean" and didn't treat them "like ladies." Say what you will, many women still expect men to open the door, pay for dinner, and be gentlemen.

Implicit-assumptions tradition-minded "lady" voters will stand by their man regardless of policies (i.e., Hillary and Bill) as long as their man behaves as a tamed and harnessed beast. Trump punching back at the Gold Star wives and The Squad and Hillary and Nancy was political poison with their female supporters. If he gets re-elected and does it again? Groundhog Day...ugg....

What these polls reflect is that there is little enthusiasm for Biden — this is hardly a surprise. But the path to victory for Biden last time, and his path to victory next time, would be through the turnout of the "anti-Trump" vote — anything but Trump voters will swing it if they come out to vote.

The question is whether they've forgotten the perils of Trump and will stay home because Biden is uninspiringly boring (which to be fair is actually not a bad thing).

Hispanics in POTUS elections voted pretty much the same for 2016 Trump, Romney, McCain. They voted in lower percentages for Dole and Bush I.

Bush II got 35 percent in 2000. That's the high point. So doing well, so even the best isn't that high. Trump in 2020 got 32 percent.

My wife is certainly one of the disengaged people. She has opinions on things, abortion, Israel, crime, etc. but would rather go about her day not thinking about politics at all. She was unhappy during the Trump years, not just because she disliked Trump, but because she heard way more about politics than she wanted.

I think she would agree with "Biden has done a good job", but it's not so much that she agrees with his policies but because she hears less about it than she did under Trump. In that sense, the dialing back of the daily press coverage of the president's antics, and the less continuous expressions of anger in the press and in social media have worked to Biden's advantage (probably by design).

The core issue about 2024 electability is not about economics at all but rather the lack of connection between Joe Biden and average American voters. This lack of connection has been evident since his failed 1988 run for the presidency and his rarely mentioned 2007 effort. And Biden barely won in 2020 in what should have been a landslide. And at age 81 (next month) this lack of connection is magnified.

It is not the record but the aging personality. You just can't gussy up an 81-year-old into something younger and more dynamic.

The wonderful economic analysis presented by various media outlets reflects the best thinking of the Washington DC think tanks and astute surmises from focus groups and all the other political tools that the Washington Inside uses to try to gauge public opinion "out there" in the country. Yes, the Democratic party is doing pretty good but the aging leader isn't connecting.

If the Democrats truly have confidence in their economic record, then that record should buoy a younger and more dynamic candidate into the White House in November 2024 and provide a basis for another four years of progress.

The path to victory in November 2024 runs through a series of open primaries in early 2024.

They believe Biden is in their tribe. their tribe now has power and in the backs of their minds, they know that means that people like them will get jobs and have status and resources - or if not, the powers-that-be will move to fix it for Their People. When anyone other has power, and that included both Bushes and certainly Reagan, long before Trump was in, there is the disquieting feeling that they and theirs will "not be taken care of." Not only is this tribalism, it is nothing but tribalism. All the issues they pretend to care about, they do not. Even caring about abortion does not mean that they care in the least about young women with their backs against the wall. It just means they want to have people who have the Right Ideas About Women in charge. It is emotive and social, not intellectual and logical.

One can do Whataboutism on this with conservatives. Fair enough. But we didn't start the fire, and it doesn't define us as it does liberalism, an essential socially-spread belief system. Tribal.

This is a great example of how people's opinions of politicians have little or nothing to do with the actual behavior of the politicians. Trump drove Sedaris crazy and so Sedaris drove himself crazy monitoring news about Trump. Biden doesn't so he relaxes. Actual performance not a consideration.

These other guys talk about how Trump did badly among minorities because he was racist, but the racist charges were all Democratic talking points and Trump did extremely well for a Republican. It just happens that some minorities don't vote Republican (again, for reasons that have nothing at all to do with the performance of the relevant politicians or parties).

I'm skeptical of Mr. Sedaris' suggestion that he could relax and give up his constant monitoring of political affairs because, under Biden, he finally had the assurance that there was a capable pilot in the cockpit. I suspect his real motive for his not following politics so closely was the avoidance of cognitive dissonance. Sedaris and many others like him knew that, no matter what happened to the country and the world under Biden, he was committed to the point of view that either Biden was doing a great job or that things would have been much worse under Trump. Come hell or high water, there was never going to come a day when he would look around and say, "Gee, this Biden guy is a disaster. What a mistake it was to support him." If you're someone like that, the best thing to do to maintain your sanity is to tune out and pretend Biden is doing just fine.

"enraged"

I get that the very fact of his election enraged progs. He was the embodiment of uncouthness, sure. But what was so enraging, day after day? It couldn't be the economy, which did OK. It couldn't be new wars, of which there were none. It couldn't be mass incarceration, which he agreed to reduce. It couldn't be China, which even progs have come to oppose. It couldn't be Covid, where he mostly toed the Birx/Fauci prog line. Was it all about abortion, the notion that he got to appoint some "conservatives" to the Surpreme Court? Or that he beat back, at great cost, the deep-state Russia collusion attack?

"good job"

Yes, from a prog point of view Biden has done a good job. Spending has increased massively. The border is open. War is back in fashion. The green transition is ongoing. Executive agencies go after business. Progs get appointed. DoJ and other progs persecute Trump. Student loans get canceled, sort of. The rainbow military recruits transgenders. Abortion rates stay high and the issue serves Dems. Afghanistan? Who cares. Fentanyl keeps knocking off deplorables. Massive antisemitism triggers an initiative against, wait for it, islamophobia. What's not to like?

When I read this article's "I feel the way I do on a plane when the pilot announces that after reaching our cruising altitude he will head due north"; I kept thinking "yeah, that's the problem because the plane was supposed to head Southwest, but Biden turned North and nobody cared. Now we are a thousand miles from where we were, out of gas, out of money, and out of options." I was listening to an episode of Triggernometry the other day in which Bill Maher was the guest. As we all know, Maher is in many ways an old fashioned liberal - much closer to me politically than the characterization of me as a conservative makes it seem, but my version of "conservative" differs from "classical liberal" pretty much only in our interpretation of Chesterton's Fence, ISTM.

However. Where it comes to Trump, Maher is almost as unhinged as the wildest progressive. Konstantin Kisin tried to get him to say what about Trump was so terrible that he characterized the possibility of a second Trump term as a disaster or catastrophe or some word like that; repeatedly, Maher just said, "Are you kidding me?" as if the answer were self-evident.

Finally, he got around to the "wouldn't concede the election, and still hasn't," thing, which, considering that Trump walked out of the White House on his own on Jan. 20, seems rather moot. They played for him the clip of H. Clinton talking about Trump knowing he's an illegitimate president, which Maher seemed somehow never have heard - but having heard it during this interview, he seemed to think she said it between the election and inauguration instead of three years later. And she carefully hedged her words so as not to survive just how Trump got himself illegitimately elected. Therefore Clinton's "election denial" was not of the same character as Trump's, and Trump reigns supreme in irresponsibly and dangerously threatening democracy.

Kisin and Foster are British guys, so maybe it was unfamiliarity, or maybe it was lack of time or a desire to keep the interview on the footing it had been on, but they didn't press him on things like specifics of Trump's governance, the protests at the 2017 inauguration, or the impeachments and indictments over things that either ought not to be actionable because of long precedents or were clearly politically motivated.

So true for the Ladies. Especially when there's ironing to be done.

Sebastian asked: But what was so enraging, day after day?

It was women. Most women cannot stand him. I know guys here in Wisconsin who still toe their wife's line . Wife hates Trump, Husband must too. Or there will be no sex. It is really that simple.

It sounds like many on both sides of the debate depend on the head of federal government to feel secure, safe, whole.

I don't know who any of those people are. They seem intelligent, in a clever sort of way. And they are apparently people of some influence, so people pay them some attention.

But they are mind-crushingly ignorant about what is actually happening in front of their faces. And apparently deliberately so.

I sincerely hope that Meade responded "I was making a joke."

Althouse and I are seldom on the same wavelength, but if you are telling her that she is stuck in the Madison bubble and not aware of what is really happening, you might want to think about why she posted these two items together, along with her story of the woman who "agreed" with Meade.

Anyone with income below upper middle class is unlikely to go along with Biden having done a good job while they contend with current inflation.

Correct. We commenters here can fill up our gas tank and buy prime rib on the way home. Lower income gonna put 20 bucks in the tank and buy hamburger on the way home. But, with MSM on Democrats side, low information voter thinks Republicans are the cause.

The question is whether they've forgotten the perils of Trump...

And yet the world is falling apart under Biden. How can people 'agree' he's doing a good job?

This comment section is its own bubble. Democrats are half the electorate, and 85% of them think the current administration is just wonderful. So it's quite likely Biden will be the next president, and Harris thereafter.
Even if Trump somehow finds himself in the Whitehouse again, he could have a democrat congress which will spend all its time trying to impeach him a couple more times.

It’s so freeing, no longer listening to political podcasts—no longer being enraged

It's obvious Sedaris wants to be enraged. As a friend of mine once said, "If you're angry, that means you're still alive."

Summary

When Trump was President I could open the NY Times and Washington Post every day to read that The Walls Are Closing In on Trump and the collusion with Putin story is the biggest and best news ever.

Somehow that all ended, not sure why, and now we have Biden, who is my guy, but it's just not the same.

Poor David. Foeitog.
