"Try 'racial justice.'"

I wanted to search for an article at Vanity Fair, and the search box looked like this:

See the faint print in the box?

I thought it was funny, this idea to just "try" racial justice. The commitment to racial justice is obligatory, not something merely to "try."

This is the same problem I have with the song "Try a Little Tenderness." Just try... and if it doesn't work out for you, try something else? As Otis Redding sang the song — the one where the dress is "shaggy," rather than "shabby" — the tenderness you were supposed to try was "to rub her gentle" and "don't bruise her." And after you've tried that, what?

In the old days of prominent Alka-Seltzer ads, the catchphrase was "Try it, you'll like it":

"Try it" was a con, and in the end, you would not like it (and you'd need Alka-Seltzer).

But anyway... what I was looking for was that article about French bulldogs. Ah, here it is: "The French Bulldog Revolution: A Culture War Over America’s Most Popular Dog." Did you know Frenchies had ousted Labs as the most popular dog?

Oddly enough, this article is about racial justice! Subtitle: "Frenchies are beloved for their pint-size adorability, but a human fight is brewing over—yes—what colors they should be."

From the text:
[T]he “inclusive” breeders... believe that “colored dogs,” as non–brindle/fawn/white dogs are known, including the popular blue, have a place in the French bulldog community....

Around 2008, the [French Bull Dog Club of America] began its “No Fad Colors” campaign. That same year, Terry Huntley began breeding French bulldogs.... He’s owned and bred blue dogs. But for Huntley, who is Black, he grasped that the fissure in the Frenchie community “is not the color of the dogs, it’s the color of the people.”
Determined to win titles for his dogs, Huntley said he began to hire handlers who were white and seen as popular with judges to present his dogs in the ring. “It’s pretty much giving your dog to a person and saying, ‘Hey, take this dog in for me.’ ”
He said the same dogs he had shown were now getting ribbons from judges when they competed with a white handler. “Just because they’re a popular person and you hope that their popularity rubs off on your dog and you get to win. Sometimes, it’s not about who you are, it’s about who you can pay to champion your dog out.”...

ADDED: And then there's the widespread idea that dog breeding in general reflects ideas that correspond to racism among humans. From an NPR podcast last year:

Any time someone publishes a paper on dog breeds and behavior and different predispositions, they inevitably get questions about race. Like, isn't this something that explains, like, why so-and-so people of this race or ethnicity are more prone to this or behave like this.... There is a wonderful review that I would highly recommend anyone who's interested in this question check out. It's called "Human Races Are Not Like Dog Breeds: Refuting A Racist Analogy".... We have to consider that race is so complex. There are cultural dimensions. There is so much else going on. And I will also point out that the Victorians sort of manifested this idea of breed. And one of the ideals they really held it to was purity - keeping bloodlines pure. And we know, from dogs and humans, how disastrous that can be. And we know that a lot of dog breeds today have health problems because of rampant inbreeding.... Ultimately, this obsession with purity, in both species, has been to the detriment of everyone involved....

It’s appropriate that it has “racial justice” in quotes, since there’s no such thing, anyway, but instead only justice and not-justice.

I had a neighbor down the street that had a couple of them, kept getting out and showing up here to torment my cats, who spend the days outside, and my dogs, who stood at the windows barking at bulldogs.

Generally I stay away from flat-face dogs because of their tendency to slobber, and because of their always-incipient pulmonary health problems. They've been bred to the extreme to be flat-faced, just like Irish Setters have been bred to have narrow heads, with no room left for brains.

I learned from my neighbors that Frenchies can't breed naturally, and have to be artificially-inseminated to get pregnant. So: My prediction is, they won't last as the #1 American breed, because they are simply too expensive and impractical - a passing, high-maintenance fad. It's ironic, because Labs are pretty much unfazed by pretty much everything, by comparison, which I feel is one of the secrets of their success. My B.I.L., a Lab owner/lover, has told me that Labs were originally bred to help fishermen pull in their nets, in Labrador.

Justice doesn’t need modifiers, with the possible exception of “for all.”

Dog shows are fixed? I’m shocked.

I feel sorry for breeds like the French Bulldog. Being inbred out of existence.

I'll not stop until we have equity in the dog shows.

By the way, my Lucas Terrier is not even acknowledged by the Royal Kennel Club or the American Kennel Club as a legitimate breed. This was done by decree by the man who created the Lucas (through breeding a specific line of Sealyham Terriers with Norfolk Terriers). The story is that the original breeders, Sir Jocelyn Lucas and his partner the Hon. Enid Plummer did not want their dogs affiliated with the RKC. And so...while a breed standard was created, they are not officially recognized by the RKC or AKC. If you see a posting for a 'Sporting Lucas Terrier' it's not the breed standard.

My dog is breed perfect, which is to say, she's a cross between a couple of breeds (what we used to call a mutt), but her lineage can be traced to specific lines of the original Lucases. We love the dog, but to me this is nothing more than rebranding of a mutt, as are most of the currently known breeds. Honestly, the Lucas Terriers were specifically bred to hunt and burrow for critters. She's all terrier in that respect. She's a great dog and cares nothing about titles or breeds. Just food and watching out for UPS delivery guys.

The commitment to racial justice is obligatory

No it isn't. The commitment to equal justice under the law is obligatory. Anything else is agenda-driven in justice. The fantasy that somehow past wrongs can be set right by mistreating people in the present is evil, and it is a recipe for destroying the system of checks and balances we have. For every past harm that has been recognized, America and individual Americans have taken steps to rectify, much more so than any other advanced representative government. Sunlight is the best disinfectant, they say, but the act of exposing wrongdoing is the only way to address inequitable treatment and collective guilt is anathema to our deliberative system of equal justice under the law.

No one said it is a perfect system. It's just better than any alternative.

As with "ought" in the earlier post, "try" in these examples is ambiguous. "Try 'racial justice'" obviously means "try searching the term and see what you get," not "try practicing it." As for "try a little tenderness," I think "try" is a polite way of saying "This is what you should be doing," of giving advice. Like when my wife is driving on the highway in the left lane and cars are passing her on the right, and I say, "Try to stay in the right lane unless you're passing someone." A bit more gentle than "Get in the right lane!"

I've never understood people wanting butt ugly dogs - well, especially porcine bulldogs like this one. Most especially, that frightfully homely, long-snouted type like Patton had. What is it that draws people to such creatures?

Ann Althouse said...

"My prediction is, they won't last as the #1 American breed, because they are simply too expensive and impractical...."

They might. A lot of people are going with "rescue" dogs now and not buying from breeders at all. But what sort of person wants a breed? Maybe a lot of women who want something cute, something that's a good fashion accessory, something that's associated with a celebrity they love. That's going to get you to the Frenchie, not the Lab.

I'm sure many people buy Labs from breeders because they think it's going to get them the temperament they want or because they've had Labs in the past and feel connected to the breed.

But a lot of the kind of people who in the old days would pick a Lab are going for Labradoodles. They think they are getting the Lab temperament but with more cuteness.

And/or they're hoping for less shedding, more brains (poodles are supposed to be among the more intelligent breeds).

In general, many people want to know what they are getting in a dog. Breeds come with known characteristics (good and bad). A rescue dog is more of a roll of the dice. I think there's an element of that in people who are hesitant to adopt a baby.

Its amazing how back in the old days everyone watched the same tV programs and saw the same commericials and people would end up using them as catchphrases. Try it, you'll like it. I can't believe I ate the whole thing. Go for the gusto. For all you do, this bud's for you. "Where's the beef?" ended up being used in a POTUS campaign.

Carol burnett and SNL used to satrize commericals. The advertising Biz tried to recreate this by making Superbowl "Incredible commerical sunday" - but the buzz doesn't last more than a few days.

I'm trying to think of a TV commerical in the last 30 years thats stayed with me, and cant think of one. But I've actually gone back and listened to some of the "Go for the Gusto" beer commericial on Youtube, becuase they were so well done.

There used to be a Merrill Lynch commerical where its a crowd and everyone's talking and then they all stop and strain to hear one guy in the crowd who's talking to Merrill Lynch. You get better odds with a "breed" but it's still a crap shoot. We're a three-generation Lab family. Mostly female. Black, brown and yellow. LOTs of 'diversity'.

The Queen Mum (Zephyr) was as perfect and beloved as a four-legged family member could be. From Home Breeder. Cheap. Actually won a case in small claims court for me. Others, from boxes at supermarkets to very expensive professional breeders have been playful, moody, genius, psycho, sneaky, hyper, lazy, fetch-it-crazy, too-sophisticated-to-fetch, licky, snappy, etc.

If interested in a rescue, I would suggest a 'foster' dog. In a few weeks you will know. If it's the wrong pick, better to try again than make a harder choice later on.

All right thinking people agree. Don't you?
