"Ron DeSantis sat at her table talking in an outdoor voice indoors, failing to observe any basics of conversational ritual or propriety, reeling off an unself-conscious list of his programs and initiatives and political accomplishments."

"Impersonal, cold, uninterested in anything outside of himself. The Carlsons are dog people with four spaniels, the progeny of other spaniels they have had before, who sleep in their bed. DeSantis pushed the dog under the table. Had he kicked the dog? Susie Carlson’s judgment was clear: She did not ever want to be anywhere near anybody like that ever again. Her husband agreed. DeSantis, in Carlson’s view, was a 'fascist.'"

Wrote Michael Wolff, in "The Fall: The End of Fox News and the Murdoch Dynasty," quoted in "Tucker Carlson Refutes New Book’s Claim That Ron DeSantis Accosted His Dog" (The Jewish Voice).

Carlson's response: “This is absurd.... He never touched my dog, obviously.... It’s totally made up. Ridiculous actually."

Notice Wolff's devious writing. We're told "DeSantis pushed the dog under the table." Pushing suggests something done with the hand, not the foot. But somehow the next sentence is "Had he kicked the dog?" It's in question form, as if using a question justifies floating any accusation. We're then shuttled along to the next idea: Susie Carlson can't abide anyone "like that." Like what? A dog kicker? Is Susie's opinion based on the dog interaction, just mentioned, or some feeling about what sort of conversation is appropriate at the table — warm, modulated, attentive to others? Then we're clobbered with the word "fascist"! What supports that? Being annoyed by dogs swarming underfoot when you're at the table, talking too loud, and not doing chitchat in the manner that pleases the daughter of the headmaster at St. George's School?

This is an excellent example of why Republicans cannot win elections.

Democrats are all in. They're going to use every trick in the book. Innuendo? That's child's play compared to what they'll do when cornered. This "he kicked a dog" trick has been around at least as long as Mitt Romney, if not before.

Republicans aren't going to get a fair shot. Democrats don't play fair. The GOP needs to defund and then outlaw this political party and that starts in the House of Representatives, where all these continuing resolutions are set up to launder billions of dollars of taxpayer money to Democrat Party interests. Stop that.

Until you do, I don't want to hear your whinging about how they're so unfair to you. Time to butch up you little babies. This ain't beanball we're playing. It's WAR!

DeSantis' critiques always seem so muddled. I've been a dog owner. I like dogs. If a dog approaches me and obviously wants to be petted, I pet it. But I've pushed people's dogs away with my leg or foot when they continue to push against me under the table, or when they lick me. And I most certainly parry them with a raised knee when their stupid owners allow them to jump up on me. Neither of those actions constitutes kicking.

And it sounds like that's what DeSantis did. Not politically astute, perhaps, but perfectly reasonable otherwise.

I am voting for DeSantis. Florida is lucky to have him and America would be lucky to have him.

Criticisms:

Why did he pick a fight with Disney, FL’s largest employer? Response: Disney just announced massive new investments in their FL properties.

What about the culture war issues, books in schools, 6 week abortion restrictions, etc.? Response: these are state issues and the voters of FL can change things. DeSantis just signed legislation adopted by FL legislature. And local tv cut away when the books were displayed at a news conference because their content was too raw.

DeSantis is too self involved and self conscious. Response: He is competent.

As a Jewish publication, they should know better than to misuse the word “fascist”. Traditionally, it didn’t mean anyone opposed to Dem party orthodoxy, but rather supported government/big business partnership socialism - which much better describes Democrats today, than Republicans. As well as their suppression of free (and antagonistic) speech. It’s a totalitarian philosophy, and was the basis for Naziism, which resulted in then execution of millions of Jews in the Holocaust. That’s why a Jewish publication should be held to a higher standard here. (If you disagree - try reading Hayak’s “Road to Serfdom”, which contemporaneously explains these

Calling De Santa’s a fascist is just cheap name calling. Everyone hates fascists, so calling your enemies fascists is just cheap and lazy. Esp since it was apparently based on DeSantis using his outside voice indoors. Is he socially inept? Maybe. BFD. He has also been very good at using his power as governor to pushback against the totalitarian (and fascist) actions of the FJB Administration. They should be calling him an antifascist instead.

Their dog, Seamus, rode in a carrier on the roof of the family's Chevrolet Caprice station wagon for the 12-hour trip. Oligonicella @ 10:37: Thanks for the input on Romney's Dog Death Ride. It prompted me to spend 0.0000001 second of my valuable time on Google to inquire about the temperatures recorded at St. Catharines, Ontario, in June 1983. St. Catharines is a first approximation to "Southern Ontario" toward which Romney and his family were driving from MA. I'm guessing that temperatures along his trajectory (probably I-90, much of it paralleling the southern shore of Lake Ontario) were not far off the ones shown here.

Here's the link to the temperature record. The night-time temperatures seem to run in the 60's and 70's; the daytime highs hit 90 (once?) but mostly seemed to be in the 80's.

https://weatherspark.com/h/m/19861/1983/6/Historical-Weather-in-June-1983-in-St.-Catharines-Canada

So, in still air, the Romney dog had to deal with --wait for it-- temperatures in the 80's. Then consider "wind chill." When you are facing a 60-70 mph wind, you are losing heat at a fair clip. I would think Romney installed some kind of windbreak for the dog not to keep him from getting too HOT, but to keep him from getting too COLD.

I've driven in "summer" evenings on my motorcycle and hypothermia is a real concern.

I had a former coworker who grew up in a place that had packs of feral dogs. She was terrified of any and all dogs - even the ones that look more like a fashion accessory than a real dog.

I wanted to like DeSantis, I really did. His stewardship of Florida persuaded me he had the makings of a competent chief executive. I remained favorably inclined even when he decided to branch out and seek a greater stage. However, he lost me when he hitched his star to the donors and "professionals" of the GOPe. In virtually every instance, whether by his own shortcomings or from listening to these grifters, he has been wrong-footed, and it shows in the polling.

Whether it always was there or whether he just morphed into it, DeSantis has become, as a commenter upthread mentioned, Jeb! 2.0. Wooden, tin-eared and out of his depth, he's reverted to the form he exhibited as a globalist congressman, so I'm convinced that really is his comfort zone. Unfortunately, it's not mine, and I've decided there is no way I can support DeSantis for president, Hooker's ad hominem attacks on DeSantis questioners notwithstanding.

While he certainly has warts (who doesn't?) the only GOP candidate who I believe is firmly committed to an America First, populist agenda, is President Trump. My only hope is he will choose his allies and enemies more carefully since this is not his first rodeo. Given the current condition of this country, I consider this a binary election, and I proudly regard myself as a broken glass Trump supporter.

ACCOSTED | English meaning - Cambridge Dictionary

to go up to or stop and speak to someone in a threatening way: I'm usually accosted by beggars and drunks as I walk to the station.

Accost - Definition, Meaning & Synonyms | Vocabulary.com

To accost is to approach someone aggressively or confront them in an inappropriate way.

DeSantis did not "accost" the dog. I've always understood accosting to be strictly verbal, he does not seem to have said anything threating to the dog. Only nudged it out of the way. Or kicked it, in Wolff's mind.

Surely there is a less grating word to use in this context. "Struck", "Beat", "Attacked". "savagely traumatized" or something along those lines might be better for a Michael Wolff to use.

Does anyone believe Wolff? CNN apparently is saying that the entire book is a lie and nobody should buy it. According to Scott Adams.

Interestingly for those actually living in the state he's run for the past few years, the vast majority of us love what he's done. We view him as extremely competent. A man who does what he says he's going to do. I cannot say that about any other person running on either side.

I'm not sure if the polls reflect reality or the wishes of both the media and Trumpers. But given the waves of anti-DeSantis feeds that come through daily, and the pronouncements of his impending campaigns death, it just seems to me everyone on both sides are more worried about him as the only serious challenge than anyone else.

I see nothing negative about Nikki Haley. I don't even see much about Trump anymore- other than Trump denouncing DeSantis. Just seems like a combined, prolonged attack.

Little April Apple, (Hunter Bidens hooker) has TDS. She absolutely has to bring Trump up no matter what the subject is. She needs help.

My source is Tucker Carlson’s denial, as quoted by Ann Althouse: “This is absurd.... He never touched my dog, obviously.... It’s totally made up. Ridiculous actually." And what’s obvious about DeSantis not touching Carlson’s dog? If you go to someone’s house who has a dog, wouldn’t you at least pet the dog?

Dick-Stepping Trump has the right ideas - but he surrounds himself with ass-kissers and deceitful yes-men.
They inevitable fall out of favor with Trump and then back-stab Trump and Trump's agenda.

According to Drago - Nothing is Trump's fault - ever!

Sad you're such a blind faith Trump-ass kissing liar. and a water carrying liar for the Democrat-Trump aligned narrative.

Trump and the Democrats (democrat media) tell us who they fear most. That they fear and loathe and lie about the same person is just a happy coincidence. Trump is basically a democrat.

Its her non-stop over the top daily defense of the establishment GOP working hand in glove with the democraticals for decades that is most noteworthy.

Trump should abandon the GOP. Why is he running for the GOP nomination?
He should run independent of the GOP. Drago insists the GOP is awful.
Why would perfect lord and savior 77 year old super-hero Trump want to be the head of a party he despises?

Ever-Trumpers refuse to admit that Trump has some major flaws. That I point them out is not TDS - delicate tribalists.

Keep the blind faith.

Uh oh. HBTPFH is very very upset that someone dared to criticize her beloved GOPe-ers!

Not surprising really. HBTPFH is scrambling right now to find some way to blame conservatives/Trump for the GOPe attempted sellout to the dems on the budget.

Having Murdoch retire after working hard for 2+ years to set DeSantis up as the replacement for Trump after the GOPe/dem alliance takes Trump out via lawfare has also had to have taken a toll on our proud GOPe suckup.

I mean, thats alot of pressure to put on HBTPFH. She has to figure out a way to defend the GOPe sellouts, help them cover their tracks, AND find a way to blame Trump for their actions.

Thats not an easy task for anyone.

Hunter Biden's tax payer funded Hooker: "Why is he running for the GOP nomination?"

Because he gave us the most conservative governance as President in our lifetimes and the vast plurality/majority of republican primary voters support the policies he pushed AND those republican primary voters know that Trump doesnt hate them with a white hot hatred like you have for them.

So no. The republican primary voters that know you and your GOPe heroes despise them are....unlikely..to accept your establishment advice.

You'll simply have to deal with the fact that the decades of GOPe self-dealing and backstabbing the base, which you like because you hate the "deplorables", means that a more populist, more diverse, more working class candidate better reflects that base than say a Romney or McConnell or Paul Ryan.

Does that make you weep? Because its quite clear you cant deal with that at all.

Hitler liked dogs. Obviously to Wolff, DeSantis is "worse than Hitler!"

Not only that, Hitler liked wolff dogs. "Alsatian wolf hounds" specifically.

I say that makes Michael Woolf a National Socialist (A/K/A NAZI)

Interestingly, there is one other poster at Althouse blog who repeatedly tells Trump supporters to leave the GOP as frequestly as HBTPFH: LLR-democratical Chuck.

Discuss.

Let's see:
One party, that jouRnOliSts fellate and support, has a president who showered with his young daughter (to the extent it has damaged her pysche as an adult and may have contributed to her succumbing to drug addiction), and routinely, IN PUBLIC, sniffs little girls in what can only be described as frightening and predatory behavior.

The other party has a presidential candidate who talks inside with his outside voice. OMG!

MarcusB THEOLDMAN

Sorry, we no longer allow the Left to dictate morals and proper behavior to us. They support pushing trans surgery for minors, want graphic sexual depictions in school books for young students, and never condemn those who loot and kill white people in the name of racial justice.

"Discuss" LOL. Ever-Trumper/ Church of "Trump can do no Wrong" Drago's conservative hero! LOL.... Not too many takers.

You are fine with lies about DeSantis. You are Fine with Trump's Fuck ups.

Still waiting for Drago to admit to at least one Trump flaw.
