Sunrise/sunset.

Snow erased the line between the water and the sky at sunrise:

Those are my photos from this morning. Later, Meade went out and caught the sunset:

One thing I miss about Madison is the sheer number of reflective bodies of water. Here in South Central PA, there are few lakes nearby. The Susquehanna runs along the west side of Harrisburg, but it's full of rocks and there are only so many variations of the Capitol in silhouette. Depending on time of year, I could get lots of different sunrise shots of the Capitol and isthmus from Middleton and other spots, but I haven't seen any photo ops around here that compare.

Professionally, I use Ann's concept of cruel neutrality all the time.

I just finished a brief in a tricky case. My lawyer friend read it. She said the beginning was wrong and didn't belong at the top. Cruel neutrality. I fixed the brief; much better now.

Snowrizontal sunrise; bleak pink sunset.

There's a crescent moon close to Jupiter tonight, and Mars following; I think I saw Venus briefly the other evening--it will become much more visible after sunset in the coming weeks.

Clear skies!

Sounds good to me, I mean what could possible go wrong?

Thanks for the compliments on my photo. I ended up walking the 4 miles across Lake Mendota to Governor Nelson State Park and back. The colorful sunset over Middleton took me by surprise, it had been mostly overcast and gray all day. Suddenly, from the middle of the lake, no one else within sight — sunset. Felt like I was on another planet.

I started putting up our gazebo today. It's the Costco Grand 12x14-ft gazebo. I had 3 friends over and my electrician also stopped by and lent a hand. We got the posts and horizontal beams assembled and while I was drilling holes in the concrete, my friends were assembling the roof trusses.

The patio slopes for water runoff, so the downstream end of the gazebo is elevated with two layers of pressure treated 2x8s. That end of the gazebo is firmly fastened to the concrete, while the other end is just loosely fastened.

We still have some work to do on the framework and then need to lift the roof trusses into place and fasten them together. That'll happen on Monday when we get dry weather again, but the high temperature will only be about 37F. That's much warmer than Madison was today, but it's still chilly for here. Snow is forecast for the latter part of next week.

Judd Apatow's documentary on Garry Shandling is very good and very funny, but very long. By the end of the show, you will know him better than you know yourself, and still feel like you don't know him at all (most of his friends said he was always a mystery to them). Brilliant, troubled guy.

Pfizer guy losing his shit after O'Keefe calmly joins him at table with footage is something else. Progressive core meltdown to the point of the idiot fighting to smash the laptop as if that's the only copy. His defense is that he was just being a dude lying on a 3rd date. Then he thinks it outrageous he was duped. Calls cops and pressures restaurant owner to prevent crew from leaving.
So good. A must see.

That’s not the bombshell. Nobody is much thinking about any Trump criminality in Italy. There’s plenty of Trump criminality for prosecutors here in the US of A.

No; the bombshell (one among many, to be sure) was the handling of public announcements by Barr et al, suggesting that the Durham probe had turned criminal… And letting the right wing media bubble presume that the subjects of the criminal investigation were Trump detractors. When in fact the subject was Trump himself.

I don’t know, or much care, what Trump did or didn’t do with respect to Italy. I care about what a laughable bust the entire Durham Debacle was. I remember very well how the Althouse Trumpist commentariat was so hyped about Durham. And now, with this detailed, sourced, exhaustive A-Team NYT reporting, we get a look inside Durham’s and Bart’s offices. And how they obliterated DoJ norms for investigations and prosecutions.

Within three hours of the release of the NYT story tonight, Chris Hayes’ MSNBC production team had readied this brilliant summary of the story:

The Italian Job

So, a funny thing happened in the news that probably only makes sense to us old farts who have been doing TrumpWorldStupid chasing forever; apparently, the hero that was going to save Trump from the whole Russia, Russia, Russia thing never admitted to discovering any no-good-dirty scoundrels who implicated Trump in a counter-intelligence investigation to prove a Trump - Russian link, but along the way, he did find Italian officials who said maybe Trump was up to some financial crimes.

Observation: if it looks bad, it is bad. The baddies who said Trump's campaign was probably likely breached by Russian operatives began when George Papadopoulos leaked to Aussie Commissioner Alex Downer. Don Trump Jr. himself, via email, boasted to all and sundry folks that the Russian government was on board to help The Donald.

Now, it's just great that Billy Barr was working with Johnny Durham, bustling about Europe, raising questions about why Trump was being treated like Russia targeting him was somehow between anyone else but Russia and the Trump campaign, exactly when the 2019 impeachment thing was happening.

How stupid is anyone who hasn't connected these dots just yet -- Durham would never find the damn dirty folks who implicated Trump in the Russia matter because a lot of what transpires regarding Trump tales is entirely Trump driven. We all know why Barr and Durham never followed up on information from the Italians and it didn't happen because Trump's lawyers didn't speak the language.

"But perhaps no one suffered a more cruel fate than Rosanne Boyland, a Trump supporter from Georgia. Video posted by Gateway Pundit on Thursday shows people attempting to resuscitate Boyland near the lower west terrace tunnel, the scene of the most violent clashes between police and protesters. This is where officers viciously beat another female Trump supporter, as I reported here in 2021.

Boyland likely suffocated after being hit with noxious chemical gas in the enclosed area then trampled as police forcefully pushed people outside the tunnel, even though the building had been empty for nearly two hours.

It’s the first time Boyland’s lifeless body is seen in full view. Desperate protesters then drag her body to a line of officers and plead for help. But the cops kept attacking people and seemed unconcerned with her condition. One officer identified as Lila Morris reportedly beat Boyland’s dead body with a metal baton as she laid face up on the ground.

As Boyland’s body is finally dragged away by police, protesters confront officers. “She’s fucking dead! This is on you, motherfuckers!” (The D.C. coroner claimed Boyland died of a drug overdose.)"

The Life-Long Rock-Ribbed Republicans seem to be deeply troubled about the MSNBC-floated possibility that the Mueller Investigation's $28 million 3 year investication conducted entirely by Democrat hacks failed to properly and fully investigate an anonymous Italian tip in 2019 that suggested that somehow, somewhere, Donald Trump might possibly have been connecticted with something nefarious, and that the Durham team which looked into it didn't find anything either.

This is a "bombshell."

Why the LLRRRs are not equally or more concerned about the revelations of what is very, very hard to interpret as anything but blatant bribery of the guy who is now the President, by both Ukranian and Chinese interests, is a curious matter.

The phrase "Look, Squirrel" comes to mind.

A story about pictures and coincidences:
https://petapixel.com/2023/01/24/with-cameras-everywhere-crazy-coincidences-are-now-normal/

I don't find this at all surprising. For several reasons. Wherever you are, no matter what you're doing, if you take a photo, people in the background are going to be people hanging around in the same places doing the same thing. Whether you never travel to other places or travel a lot. Likely to be people of the same social class. In my life, I've interacted and known thousands of people. Some I remember, most I don't, But I've run into many in some of the most unusual places. Was out stretching my legs, and the dog's legs, on the Massachusetts turnpike one day while moving from Maine to NY. And someone looked familiar, and I must have looked familiar to him, as we walked our dogs. And after frankly staring at each other for a bit, we engaged in conversation. We had served on the same sub, and he was moving to Maine as I was leaving. While living here we made one trip to Niagara Falls (pre covidiocy we went there once or twice a year) and on Goat Island one of my sons met a girl he had gone to grade school with in California. Weird, ha?

Voxday has a very dark interpretation of this in his post on Secret Stalker Society.
https://voxday.net/2023/01/26/secret-stalker-society/

Almost as if he was an agent provocateur trying to stir up trouble and paranoia.

If you're a jetsetter and sit in the international arrivals area of JFK all day, someone you know or have met briefly will pass you by. You may of may not recognie them. If you're from NJ and hang out in Grand Central Station all day, someone you've will pass by you. Works the other way. Someone you don't know ends up in a random picture, and later on- you meet.

U.S. interests would be best served by avoiding a protracted conflict. The costs and risks of a long war in Ukraine are significant and outweigh the possible benefits of such a trajectory for the United States. Although Washington cannot by itself determine the war's duration, it can take steps that make an eventual negotiated end to the conflict more likely. Drawing on the literature on war termination, the authors identify key impediments to Russia-Ukraine talks, such as mutual optimism about the future of the war and mutual pessimism about the implications of peace. The Perspective highlights four policy instruments the United States could use to mitigate these impediments: clarifying plans for future support to Ukraine, making commitments to Ukraine's security, issuing assurances regarding the country's neutrality, and setting conditions for sanctions relief for Russia. - Rand Corp

Wait wut? I thought that the smart play was to escalate and never stop until Kiev controls every square inch of the fake country that was pasted together in the chaos of the USSR's breakup? I thought that the smart play was to keep arming Kiev until every ethnic Russian is dead or expelled from Ukraine's putative borders!!

Why didn't Czechoslovakia think of fighting it out to the death? Why did Austria and Hungary divide into separate countries and not duel to the death?
