"Biden, Storyteller in Chief, Spins Yarns That Often Unravel/President Biden has been unable to break himself of the habit of embellishing narratives to weave a political identity."

That's the headline at the NYT for something currently at Memeorandum with the headline "Biden's Folksiness Can Veer Into Folklore, or Falsehoods."

Perhaps that had been the front-page teaser at the Times. It's not on the front page at the moment. It went up yesterday, but there's only one newer headline with the name Biden on the front page — "Biden Administration Plan Could Lead to Employee Status for Gig Workers" — and that isn't about Biden, just his administration.

There's an older headline still on the front page — "Joe Biden Knows How to Use Donald Trump." That extols Biden... but for what? What is Biden being given credit for here? The author is Ezra Klein, who goes on about how "startlingly few interviews and news conferences" Biden gives.

He doesn’t go for attention-grabbing stunts or high-engagement tweets. I am not always certain if this is strategy or necessity: It’s not obvious to me that the Biden team trusts him to turn one-on-one conversations and news conferences to his advantage....

In other words, you suspect Biden's people don't trust him to get through interviews. Is Klein trying to be funny? I don't think so. I think he's earnestly endeavoring to help Biden.

The theory of the piece is that Biden "knows how to use" Trump by hanging back and letting Trump go for all the attention. The idea is — as it's been throughout Trump's political career — that Trump will destroy himself. Keep hoping! I wish Trump would move on, but let's not effuse over Biden.

And this new article — "Biden, Storyteller in Chief, Spins Yarns That Often Unravel/President Biden has been unable to break himself of the habit of embellishing narratives to weave a political identity" — is just so blatantly soft-pedaled. Imagine the same kind of article about Trump. It would call him an outrageous liar.

For more than four decades, Mr. Biden has embraced storytelling as a way of connecting with his audience, often emphasizing the truth of his account by adding, “Not a joke!” in the middle of a story. But Mr. Biden’s folksiness can veer into folklore, with dates that don’t quite add up and details that are exaggerated or wrong, the factual edges shaved off to make them more powerful for audiences.

That's the first paragraph. The next 2 paragraphs tell us about how Trump is worse.

Paragraph 4:

Mr. Biden’s fictions are nowhere near that scale. But they are emblematic of how the president, over nearly five decades in public life, has been unable to break himself of the habit of spinning embellished narratives, sometimes only loosely based on the facts, to weave together his political identity. And they provide political ammunition for Republicans eager to tar him as too feeble to run for re-election in two years....

So Trump is much worse, but in order to beat Trump in the next election, Democrats shouldn't want a candidate who makes it harder for them to make dishonesty a central issue. That's the point of the article, I'd say.

This is a flailing illegitimate Regime with an obvious puppet figurehead.

They are actively trying to start World War 3 with Russia.

Their policies are so unpopular and so obviously failed that they need a nuclear event to distract from this.

Putin is a piece of shit, but hopefully he realizes what the Biden Regime's goals are and avoids using nukes.

Joe will launch more attacks on Russia until he forces Russia to use nukes. This is the obvious goal of this warmongering bunch of shitheads.

Oh the lengths they will go to avoid saying the obvious: Biden has a big problem being truthful and in fact cannot conduct ANY event without veering into "falsehoods" as they so sweetly phrase it. Yet this is made into a single news article by the NYT. With Trump, every speech was considered false until the FactCheckers verified it. With Biden, the FactCheckers aren’t that interested in his speeches. Are they really only just realizing this now? And if Trump told untruths, weren't they mostly just him saying that he was the most something or the best at something? Biden does that too, but also offers wholly fictional versions of himself.

You can hack around the paywall, or you can try to read the article in the second or two before the paywall comes down (maybe speed reading wasn't a scam and I should have taken it in high school). Trump saying it didn't rain on his inauguration day doesn't strike me as a very significant "lie." I can't imagine him actually knowing that not to be the case but saying it anyway. It also pales compared to some of Biden's whoppers.

TreeJoe said...

The idea that he is weaving a political identify is, itself, a yarn being spun.

Biden is, as best as I can tell, a well chronicled political liar since at minimum 1988 when he withdrew from a Presidential Election over his liars and plagiarism.

He was a shitty Senator who well rightfully questioned when Obama chose him as VP. His policy stances had often been mocked and he had very little accomplishments. He was known as a blowhard. He was selected to be VP on the basis of foreign policy experience, but had very few real foreign relationships or accomplishments to his name - he chaired a committee.

His tenure as VP was basically mocked by Obama himself and then complicated by what he did in places like Ukraine.

Now as President he's low energy, an even worse speaker, leads nothing, and has the White House often walking back his comments as if he's not the President.

His political identity is basically someone who accomplished little and constantly got promoted despite being unreliable, a poor speaker, and having very troubling habits with women.

I have always believed that Biden is the Walter Mitty of politics. He invents stories to make himself look better to himself. He has always been a liar and a fool. His election to the Senate was accomplished by the death of his wife and daughter in a traffic accident she caused. He has lied about that, too. His delusions were shattered by the debacle of 1988. He was resurrected by Obama for reasons that are a mystery. There are not very many Democrat Senators that are smart but Biden was the dumbest. Well, Patty Murray may be dumber, but not by much.

Regarding Trump and Beiden, Democrats work by creating short term ploys that resolve a specific weakness which are intended to keep them ahead in the sequence of short terms. By being ahead in the short term they expect to stay in power long term by legislation that favors them in elections. This strategy failed in 2020.

Obviously they had no presidential timber and should have nominated a sacrificial candidate, and let Trump win. Even if Trump had good policy and avoided inflation, the public would not know they were better off, it would have been business as usual. The democrats could have kept the hate up for beating Hillary and the midterms and 2024 would have been landslide democrat victories, and Trump would have been gone for good in 2024. The democrats would have ruled for a decade.

Now the failure of the Beiden admin has created much Ill will toward democrats and they will not recover in time for 2024. A greedy short term approach has cost them much.

The December fatal accident followed the election. [I]t was Reported that Maj Leader Mike Mansfield had to talk the Senator-elect into going forward with taking office in January.

First, because it is absolutely correct to acknowledge this facts: Joe Biden has had more than his share of tragedy.

Second: he didn't have to parlay his personal tragedies into political gain - he chose to do that. Making his wife and child the victim of a drink driver when they weren't. Making his son the victim of chemical warfare when it's unlikely - or implying that his son's death was related to combat when it wasn't.

Third: "it was reported"... Do I need to complete that thought?

Even psychopaths can experience tragedies - they just don't care, except insofar as they can use them. Is Biden a psychopath? I have no idea. But the way he lies certainly leaves that door open.

That's a long column just to say the obvious that Biden lies his ass off. What's interesting is when they will ever write an article about the democrat butt sniffing press that has allowed it to go on unchallenged for decades.

Joe Biden just claimed today that "we almost lost a couple firefighters" when lightning struck his home 15 years ago.

According to a report from the time, the lighting strike caused "a small fire contained to the kitchen" that "was under control in 20 minutes."

At least Hillary would stay bought.

@alanc709, what makes you believe that?

Clinton was not only a good liar, but he was an entertaining one.

@minnesota, I disagree. His standard lie was “I feel your pain.” Neither a good lie nor an entertaining one.

Ezra Klein famously wrote an article saying that the US Veterans Administration health system was a good model for an American national health care system.

The man doesn't know anything. He and Biden are a good match. Maybe Ezra can write Biden's official biography.

The problem for Democrats isn't that Biden lies, it's that he's so bad at it.

Corn Pop's name was William Morris. His obituary is here. That doesn't mean that everything that Biden said happened actually happened.

When is the last time you heard one say - ever - "Actually, that is a good point you made."

Actually, it is a great debate strategy if you are not too egotistical to use it.

Pick your moment and use on an issue that does have some gray areas and it can be very effective. Makes you look more tolerant than your opponent who then feel like they need to reciprocate in order to regain some control.

"Biden interview with Tapper on CNN this evening."
"Any bets as to the time the interview goes off the rails? My money is on two and a half minutes in."
I lose! He went off the rails in the first 10 seconds.
81 million, huh. You guys got to be so proud.

Does anyone believe the Corn Pop story?
How about the top of his law school class?
Academic scholarship? Athletic scholarship?
Appointment to the Naval Academy he turned down?
A drunk driver killed his wife and child?
He's always been middle class. (note his wealthy linage was wiped from Wikipedia prior to his VP nomination)
He's driven over the road big rigs?
He met his present wife on a blind date?
He was raise Puerto Rican?
He marched in the Civil rights movement?
There are so many BS stories it's impossible to remember them all. True is Bo Biden was probably the only one in that whole family with good character.

And now his son died in Iraq. Not the (unprovable) died due to long term effect of burn pits, but actually overseas.

Beau Biden was a JAG (lawyer) stationed at Camp Victory, but somehow he was awarded a Bronze Star by Chief of staff of the Army Raymond Thomas Odierno. Nice to be a Senator's / VP's son.

Camp Victory was pure Hell! Google it!

Camp Victory contained the Sports Oasis dining facility (DFAC) and the Coalition Cafe. There were also several chain restaurants, located near the PX on Camp Liberty; including a Pizza Hut, a Subway, a Cinnabon, a Burger King, a Taco Bell, and a Green Beans coffee cafe. Additionally a new bowling center were opened to the northwest of Camp Victory main and a Turkish restaurant/hookah/coffee bar near Lost Lake just east of Dodge City North.

Brandon is in no way a gold Star father, Brandon is a congenital liar.

the president, over nearly five decades in public life, has been unable to break himself of the habit of spinning embellished narratives, sometimes only loosely based on the facts…

So says the New York Times, before assuring us that "Trump is worse." Worse at what? The Times can't say "lying," because the Times won't say that Biden lies. You can see that by doing a Google search for "Trump lied" (in quotation marks) on nytimes.com, which turns up 118 results, including this article. And that's only that exact phrase. The same Google search with "Biden" instead of "Trump" gives only one result: a news article saying that Trump's Press Secretary "falsely" tweeted that "Biden lied" (and Trump retweeted it).

What if we vary the wording and search for "Trump lies"? 945 results. "Biden lies"? Two results, and they're flukes of wording that aren't saying he ever lied (e.g. "The real cause of the unease about Mr. Biden lies elsewhere").

A slightly different search for "Trump's lies" on the NYT site brings up 461 results. "Biden's lies": zero results.

So you see, Biden doesn't lie. When Biden says things that are clearly false in ways that seem consistently designed to help him, it isn't a lie but a "habit" he's "been unable to break himself of." It's really an addiction, so you should feel bad about yourself if you criticize him for it.
